Cyclists Gear Up to Help Make sure you can vote on 5 May Mend a Broken Heart Figures published by the Office of National Statistics recently show that there are 78,906 people registered to vote in Cheltenham.

Bike ride fundraiser helps British Heart Foundation (BHF) save lives Cyclists from all over Gloucestershire are putting their hearts into pedal power in time for the 21st Cotswold Bike Ride set for Sunday 15th May 2011 to help raise vital funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) – the nation’s heart charity. The event, organised by volunteers from the BHF’s Cheltenham Fundraising Committee, is asking cyclists of all ages to help save and improve the lives of heart patients by jumping in the saddle for this 40 mile bike ride around the Cotswolds. The bike ride starts and ends in Bishops Cleeve, and travels through picturesque countryside and the villages of Brockhampton, Temple Guiting and Gotherington. All money raised from the event will support the BHF in its fight against heart and circulatory disease.

Local volunteer and Chairman of the BHF’s Cheltenham Fundraising Branch, Steve Syer says: “I am a heart transplant patient myself and I might not still be here without the help of the BHF’s pioneering research work. It’s important to raise awareness about the charity and the vital work that they do. “This is the 50th anniversary year for the BHF, and the 21st year of the Cotswold Bike Ride. In that time we have raised almost £600,000 to help BHF research into heart disease. Although I can’t physically participate in the bike ride, I urge you to join other cyclists professional and amateur - in signing up for the Bike Ride on 15th May. Taking part in events like this, helps the BHF continue to save lives every day. Your sponsorship will make a big difference in helping beat heart disease for good” To help us in saving lives, please do your best to support raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship for this event. For

more information, call Steve Syer on 01452 555892, email cotswoldsbikeride@blueyonder.co.uk or visit www.bhf.org.uk/cotswolds2011. If you don’t feel up to taking on the bike ride, perhaps you would like to join the merry band of volunteers who marshall the route and provide refreshments to the cyclists along the route – any volunteers would be made most welcome – please contact Steve Syer for more information. The BHF can only continue because you support our lifesaving work. If you would like to find out more about organising your own fundraising event for the BHF, or are interested in volunteering, please call your Fundraising & Volunteer Manager Rachel Davis on 07879 440415 or email davisr@bhf.org.uk today. Keep working with us and we will beat heart disease – for good. For more information about the BHF’s work, visit bhf.org.uk.

Andrew North, chief executive at Cheltenham Borough Council is reminding residents that they may need to act now if they are to have their say at the UK referendum on the voting system to the UK Parliament taking place on Thursday 5 May. He said: “Anyone who has moved house in the past few months needs to register with their new address to avoid missing out on their vote.’’ Residents can request a registration form by calling Cheltenham electoral registration office or by printing off a registration form from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.

Adrian Greenfrom the Electoral Commission, the independent elections watchdog, added: “Residents may also be planning to be away on 5 May, given the extra Bank Holiday for the Royal Wedding. So it’s worth applying now to vote by post or proxy if that will suit your plans. You can print off the forms from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk. It just takes a few minutes, and then you are all set for 5 May.” For more information and to check your details on the electoral register are correct call 01242 264132, email elections@cheltenham.gov.uk, visit or write to: Cheltenham electoral registration office, Cheltenham Borough Council, Municipal Offices, Cheltenham GL50 9SA

Buyers Beware Ahead of Olympic Ticket Sales

W

ith less than one week to go until the ticketing process for the Olympic Games opens, Police are giving ticket buyers new advice to make sure it’s the criminals who miss out. The rise in the use of the internet to purchase tickets and accommodation packages online, coupled with the huge expected demand, gives criminals new opportunities to sell non-existent tickets and steal personal and credit card details to use in other crimes. Over 8 million tickets will be made available for the Olympic Games and a further 2 million for the Paralympics. The ticket process for the Olympic Games opens on 15 March and runs until 26 April. By taking some simple steps anyone buying a ticket can keep help prevent them becoming a victim. Crime Reduction Officer for Gloucestershire Police, Paul Francis, said: “The 2012 Games will be one of the biggest sporting events this country has ever hosted, with nearly 11m tickets available for events right across the country. “Criminals will be looking for ways to con and steal, either through selling fake tickets or setting up professional looking sites which may look honest, but could leave you a victim. “There is some easy-to-follow advice which will help keep you safe and

ensure you can enjoy the Games next year.” If you’re buying a ticket for the Games: * The London 2012 ticket application process opens on the 15 March and you have until 26 April to apply for tickets through LOCOG as tickets are not allocated on a first come first served basis. * The only way to apply for a ticket in the UK is at www.tickets.london2012.com. This is London 2012’s official site. You can also get a postal application from any Lloyds TSB branch, or from any public library in Northern Ireland. Don’t buy a ticket from an unauthorised website or tout. You risk being scammed, and not getting the ticket you wanted and paid for. * If you get a ticket for an event you can’t attend, you can return your ticket to get a refund through the London 2012 official ticket exchange. Your ticket will then be officially resold. Details of this will be announced in due course. * There are only three official providers for Games Breaks and Hospitality Packages in the UK - these are: Thomas Cook -

www.thomascooklondon2012.com Prestige Travel www.prestigeticketing.london2012.com Jet Set Travel - www.jetsetsports.com * Other websites or companies will not be authorised to sell you a ticket as part of a package in the UK. Always check the terms and conditions to see exactly what you are being sold; * Outside of the UK London 2012 tickets are sold through the country’s National Olympic Committee, or their authorised retailer. * If you find tickets for sale before the 15th March 2011 or available from any unauthorised source at anytime, don’t buy them. They are not genuine. Report it to your local police, or London 2012 via brandprotection@london2012.com

Recycling and waste collection changes Weekly food waste collections begin ew weekly food waste collections start in Cheltenham next week, on Monday 4 April 2011. The other main change that local residents will see to their service from this date is alternate weekly collections of non-recyclable waste. The alternate weekly kerbside recycling collections will remain the same. Crews at Cheltenham Borough Council have been busy delivering over 50,000 kitchen waste caddies around the borough, along with detailed information leaflets of how the scheme will operate. To help promote the changes and answer questions from local residents, a series of road shows have been running around the town throughout February and March – and will continue into early April. Canvassers have been visiting households to explain the new recycling and waste service; and a play featuring child-friendly characters has toured around the borough’s primary schools

N

encouraging youngsters to make sure their parents take full advantage of the new food waste collection service. Waste minimisation and recycling are some of the council’s highest priorities, and the council has signed up to recycling targets of 50 per cent by 2015. Councillor Roger Whyborn, cabinet member for sustainability said: “The new weekly food waste collections will make a huge difference in reducing the amount of refuse that until now we have had to send to landfill. "We think that everyone will quickly get used to the changes and that we can work together to reuse and recycle more and more of our waste. It really is easy to make a positive impact on the environment by simply separating out our waste." People who have not yet signed up to the new brown bin garden waste service can do so at any time, and

residents can still take their garden waste to the council’s recycling centre on the Swindon Road. For more information on any of the council’s recycling facilities call 01242 264244 or visit www.cheltenham.gov.uk/waste

LOCAL NEWS funding bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for £750k to redevelop Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum has been successful. This positive news means that the redevelopment scheme can now move forward to the next stage.

Cheltenham's art gallery and museums win A £750k funding bid for redevelopment scheme

✂ ✂

The exciting and ambitious plans for the new development will provide additional galleries, new open access stores/study facilities and dedicated spaces for lifelong learning, education, outreach services and arts development programmes. There will also be an expanded events/performance space, and a new larger ground floor cafe and shop. The scheme will also provide a more prominent entrance to the art gallery and museum, and create a new footpath to Cheltenham's oldest building, medieval St. Mary's Church, from Clarence Street through to Chester Walk. The art gallery and museum will closed to the public on 1 April 2011, for the collections to be decanted into storage. Contractors are scheduled to be on site from the end of June 2011 and it is hoped that the new building will open in late 2012/early 2013. Councillor Steve Jordan, leader of the council said: "This is fantastic news for Cheltenham and for the council, and we are thrilled to receive the full award of £750k from the HLF. I would like to thank everyone who has supported the bid and worked so hard to bring this about. While there is still more work to do, when the project has been completed, the new art gallery and museum will make a huge difference to local residents and visitors, and also to this part of our town." Councillor Andrew McKinlay, cabinet member for sport and culture continued: "This huge redevelopment scheme will create a 'first stop' for visitors to Cheltenham with the re-location of the Tourist Information Centre in the new building, and a focal point for the development of a 'cultural quarter' in the town. We are very pleased to get such a good outcome from the HLF." A total of £5.4 million has now been raised out of the £6.3 million target and the outstanding amount of £919k has been underwritten by Cheltenham Borough Council. However, the trustees from the Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum Development Trust are still actively seeking to raise funds to cover the underwriting, through various applications to other charitable trusts and foundations and the launch of a public fundraising campaign from May 2011.

What is Rosen Method? As we go through life, we experience many different feelings and responses to what’s going on around us. We may sense from our environment, especially early on, that our spontaneous expression is not acceptable.

For example: We are too noisy, too much. We are in the way, we are not enough, we are not wanted. We may feel it’s “safer” not to be seen or heard so we learn to hide.

WE PUT OURSELVES AWAY Our bodies learn to hold down, back or in through muscular tension which over time becomes a physical habit or automatic response. This is reflected in how we hold ourselves, our posture, our gestures, and in turn, is reflected in how we are in life. By using gentle “listening” touch and respectful dialogue, Rosen Method Bodywork helps us to reconnect to these parts of ourselves allowing what has been unconscious to become conscious. During a session, we might become aware of physical sensations, images or memories which can offer helpful insight and allow us the possibility to create new choices in our lives. With awareness the muscles can relax and let go, and breath can fill the body. We can become softer and more open, and our lives can become a true reflection of who we are.

I am a qualified physiotherapist and shiatsu practitioner with over 25 years experience. I have been training in Rosen Method since 2006, and am now able to offer sessions as an intern. Testemonials: "Over the years I have tried a number of therapies but none have had such a profound impact not only on my emotional wellbeing but also significantly on my physical health." JP "I'm so pleased to have found Rosen and Debbie. It's such a gentle approach but it's been incredibly powerful in helping me to resolve old issues and be able to fully embrace my life today." GN

Cotswold Swans (Wildlife photography)

as first created whilst I was studying at the University of Gloucestershire. It was a fresh summer’s day, when studying indoors was too boring. So down to Pittville Park, Cheltenham I would go with all my expectations running riot inside my head and lever-arch folders bulging with notes, photocopies of research and spider-like sketches of storyboards begging to be in my next project.

Studiously working by the lakeside, gradually my eyes would coast away from the pages on the water’s edge and off into the distant island positioned so perfectly in the middle of the lake. Glistening ripples of water rebounded from the diving ducks and those skimming, jet-ski waves cut the surface distorting their reflection. As my head followed the vivacious prancing of flighted ducks, I noticed a lady feeding the birds. As she called them by name, they seemed to know her. I was blessed watching this special relationship. As the days went by, I noticed that a couple of swans would go to her as well. I’d never seen such a sight. They too had names, and responded to them. They came so close to her, she reminded me of Francis of Assisi: his love for animals matched by her love for the birds. My curiosity soon got the better of me, and it wasn’t long before I came by her side, introduced myself and promptly asked her all those repetitive questions that I’m sure she had answered many times before. So it is to Sally that my deepest gratitude lies, apart from dearest Mack, George and Zelda, of course. Cotswold Swans came from the numerous frames taken and admired by work and church colleagues, firstly by making birthday and celebration cards, then photos accepted and displayed on BBC TV weather forecasts (the most popular being the cygnets feeding in the lake), and now the first Cotswold Swans calendar which was printed by printing.com@Absolute Creative (Glos). Isotox is best - sprayed 3-4 times, 1 week apart. • Fertilise bulbs again as they bloom. They are heavy feeders and another application will ensure nice blooms for next year. • After the last chance of frost, (around mid April) you can start planting hardier annual. Top Tips for Giving Your Home a Spring Time Revival ust as the world outside takes a fresh facelift every springtime it is also important to revive your home to create a new and clean energy for the year ahead. It is time to think light, bright and clean. It is time to think new, fresh and exciting. Whether it be the seaside, countryside or sky, take inspiration from the awakening world around you and bring some life in to your home.

J

Firstly, as the weather warms, remove heavy and dark curtains from your windows in favor for sheers, silks, extra long curtains or simple cotton tab top curtains that will sway and billow in the breeze and create a gentle glow of sunlight. Choose a colour that coordinates with your design scheme and shop around to find styles with botanical or natural embroidery and beading patterns. Create tie backs that incorporate in to your scheme. Use rope and shells, twisted sea grass or ribbon. Furthermore, during colder months these curtains can be hung behind your winter curtains on a pole or track to create an extra layer of warmth and luxury. Alongside this, remove any heavy and thick cushion covers or throws and replace with pretty and intricate cushions in rustic rural patterns, beading or pastel colours. Play around to find a combination of pattern, colour, style and size that looks effective in situ. Or, consider giving your old cushions a facelift by adding buttons, patchwork floral fabric, tassels, ribbon or embroidery. Similarly take off your bed throw and replace with lightly patterned white or cream bedding to sit at the backdrop of your pretty scatter cushions and maximize

the feeling of space within the room. Even consider tying or weaving ribbon, rope or fake flowers to your bed head for a real natural and fun feel. To accessorize your home, bring in elements of the outdoors by gathering fresh flowers and placing in a vase, collecting pebbles or shells and arranging neatly in a bowl or wrapping sea grass or rope around table legs or bed heads for a nautical feel. Similarly, add floral or oceanic wall art, natural woven rugs and water features. To create a multi-sensual scheme, purchase candles and incense in floral or outdoor fragrances to keep your house fresh and lively. Alongside this, to maximize the feeling of space and light and to drawer your attention outdoors; arrange your furniture around windows and patios instead of televisions or fireplaces. If you require a more permanent lease of life why not consider painting or staining your current furniture in a cream, white or pastel colour. Furthermore, give your walls a face lift with a fresh and bright coat of paint of botanical inspired wall paper.

Dependant on your budget and desire, it is easy and relatively inexpensive to bring spring indoors. Get outside and collect natural elements to bring in to your home as accessories. Purchase some basic and inexpensive bedding and curtains to lift the feeling of light and then put your feet up and enjoying being a spectator to the waking world around you.

Planning your new Garden Some considerations to think about for garden design This is not meant to be a definitive list, but it does cover all of the major points you will need to consider before starting any work outside. It should help prevent you missing some important details, and may even give you new ideas which you may not have thought about yet. OK, so you have a garden and you want to redesign it. Perhaps you've just moved in to a property and want to create your own garden, or you might just want to revamp your existing garden to create a new atmosphere or space. Well, what next? It's all about planning! It has to be said that "a major part of the work needed in getting the garden you want is down to planning!". There is a big difference between having a vision of your ideal garden, and getting that idea realised.

keep (and maybe make a feature out of), and also for elements you want to remove. You will also need to find out details about: • Your Garden's Aspect - Is your garden north/south/east/west facing? - This will affect the type of plants you can grow, and which areas of the garden receive sun and at what times of day. • Soil Type - Is it heavy, light, dry, wet, acidic, neutral, or alkaline? - Again this affects the type of plants you can grow, and what soil modifications you may need. • Plant Exposure - Is it exposed to wind, frost, or sheltered? - This can affect the type of plants you can grow, and how well your plants do. It also affects your comfort in the garden! • Soil Drainage - Do you have areas of standing water, or is it dry? - Unless you want a bog garden, you may need to condition the soil to help excess water drain away.

Assessing your garden

• Topography - Is your garden level or sloping, and to what extent? - If it slopes, are you happy with it? Do you want to terrace the garden, or level it off?

To start off, you will need to assess your current garden, checking for existing elements that you want to

At this stage, you should also note down how good access into and out of your garden is. Take

To help you, here is a list of some things to think about whilst planning your new garden.

measurements of any access routes into your garden. This will be important once work starts as poor access will certainly slow things down! Once you have done this 'survey' of your garden, you should have a better idea of what is possible to achieve given the physical aspects of it. It should also give you a starting point to consider the next step... The functions of your new garden It's now time to think about what you want from your garden. Think about how it will be used, now and in the future. This can play a big part in determining what features will be included in the final design. Also note down your own desires for features and garden elements. Some of the things you could consider including are: • Patios • Fencing • Pond • Lawn • Pergola • Flowerbeds • Greenhouse • Shed • Irrigation • Garden Furniture • Children's Play Area • Trellising • Water Feature • Walling • Vegetable Garden • Rockery • Bog Garden • Lighting • Ornaments Be aware that the costs will not stop after the work has been completed and the garden is realised. Most gardens require financial as well as physical upkeep, and you would do well to estimate the costs of maintenance of your designs (both in terms of time and money!). 'Essential' elements of your garden It will be important to have certain 'essential' elements in your garden,

as well as those you specifically want. What does 'essential' mean? There are certain common elements to any well thought out garden. The following list shows a few examples: • Pathways - to link up areas of the garden, and provide clean, safe and 'dry' access. • Storage Areas - eg: a shed to store garden tools, lawnmowers etc. • Composting Area - to help discard your organic waste, and provide a free source of nutrient rich compost. • Outdoor Safe Electricity Supply so that electrical equipment can be used • Outdoor Water Supply - for easy access to water for hoses and watering This list gives you some idea of the kinds of things that might easily be left out at the planning stage. Well, now you should have some of the basic information to produce a great garden design which will be tailored specifically for your garden! You should now have a pretty good idea of the kind of elements your new garden will consist of, and also what kinds of plants will flourish in your garden. You can now look forward to putting pen to paper and, using the information you have gathered, and design the actual garden layout.

n a cold evening in March. We were really looking forward to a nice evening and good food. We were not disappointed by any means when we walked into Indus Tandoori Restaurant in Bath Road.

We were greeted by a waiter who showed us to our table which was in a nice cosy corner of the restaurant with bottled water and a large choice of food to choose from. I chose onion bahjis and my husband dined on samosas to start, with a crisp poppadom and home made mango chutney and several other sauces. The main meal came in good time and consisted of our choice of chicken korma and chicken dopiaza, rice and a gorgeous naan bread. Im not used to having a dessert lately but could not resist the strawberry and ice cream dessert that followed. On leaving the restaurant I was presented with a rose and thanked for our custom. We enjoyed the food and ambience of the restaurant immensely and would recommend to all and will certainly return.

Easter Fun Facts

• The name Easter comes from Eostre, an ancient Anglo-Saxon goddess, originally of the dawn. In pagan times an annual spring festival was held in her honour.

• Easter is now celebrated (in the words of the Book of Common Prayer) on the first Sunday after the full moon which happens on or after March 21, the Spring Equinox. Therefore it can occur on any Sunday from March 22nd through to April 25th. This year it’s on Sunday 16 th April. • In medieval times a festival of egg throwing was held in church, during which the priest would throw a hardboiled egg to one of the choirboys. It was then tossed from one choirboy to the next and whoever held the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and retained the egg. • Easter Bonnets are a throw back to the days when the people denied themselves the pleasure of wearing finery for the duration of Lent. By tradition, it was obligatory (or at least lucky) for churchgoers to wear some bright new piece of clothing - at least an Easter bonnet, if not a complete new outfit. • The traditional act of painting eggs is called Pysanka. • The custom of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, to whom the egg was a symbol of life.

Easter Fun Jokes • What is the difference between a crazy bunny and a counterfeit banknote? One is bad money and the other is a mad bunny! • Why did the Easter egg hide? He was a little chicken! • What do you get when you cross a bunny with an onion? A bunion • What did the bunny want to do when he grew up? Join the Hare Force. • What does a bunny use when it goes swimming? A hare-net. • What did the grey rabbit say to the blue rabbit? Cheer up! • What do you get when you pour hot water down a rabbit hole? A hot cross bunny. • How does the Easter Bunny say Happy Easter? Hoppy Easter

• The most famous decorated Easter eggs were those made by the well-known goldsmith, Peter Carl Faberge. In 1883 the Russian Czar, Alexander, commissioned Faberge to make a special Easter gift for his wife, the Empress Marie. The first Faberge egg was an egg within an egg. It had an outside shell of platinum and enameled white which opened to reveal a smaller gold egg. The smaller egg, in turn, opened to display a golden chicken and a jeweled replica of the Imperial crown. This special Faberge egg so delighted the Czarina that the Czar promptly ordered the Faberge firm to design further eggs to be delivered every Easter. In later years Nicholas II, Alexander's son, continued the custom. Fifty-seven eggs were made in all. • In 1878 President Hayes and his wife Lucy officially opened the White House grounds to the children of the area for egg rolling on Easter Monday. The event has been held on the South Lawn ever since, except during World War I and World War II. During the war years the Easter Egg Roll was held at the National Zoo, and other Washington locations. • The Guinness Book of Records holder for the largest Easter egg ever made is the Belgian chocolate producer Guylian who made the chocolate egg with at least 50.000 bars on behalf of the city of St. Niklaas. The egg measured 8.32 metres high . Twenty-six craftsman worked altogether 525 hours to build the egg. They needed 1950 kg of chocolates.
