Think About Where You Keep Your Car Keys Gloucestershire Police are urging drivers to think about where they keep their car keys after a number of burglaries in the county.

“That’s why we’re urging residents to think about where they keep their keys and to start leaving them out of sight.”

Since the beginning of the month there have been seven burglaries in the county where car keys, and then the car, have been stolen.

Gloucestershire Police have also had reports of 23 burglaries so far this month where a thief was able to get in to a home through an insecure window or door.

Crime Reduction officer for the county, Paul Francis, said: “There have been a growing number of incidents where motorists have had car keys stolen during a house burglary and then their car stolen from the driveway. "Car security has improved so much over the past few years that thieves now need the keys to steal your car and in many of these burglaries the keys had been left either near the front door or a window, where they were in easy reach.

“Leaving your windows or doors open in an unoccupied room acts as an invitation to opportunist thieves to come in and help themselves to your stuff,” continued Mr Francis. “We're asking people to help us keep their property safe and try not to make it easy for thieves. We will take a robust response to these crimes, but we need the community’s help prevent them happening at all."

Police officer the following crime prevention advice: · Help make things as hard as possible for thieves by not leaving your car keys in an obvious place. · Hide your car keys from view - do not leave them hanging up in the hallway or kitchen, or left on a table by the door. · Keep windows and doors secure in unoccupied rooms · If you have a garage, park your car in it.

Andrew North, counting officer said: ‘’In view of the fact there has been no borough elections, 41% turnout in Cheltenham is very good.’’ Find the national results on the electoral commission’s official results page: www.ukreferendumresults.ab outmyvote.co.uk

Single person tax review P

have been undertaken in other parts of the country they have resulted in substantial increase in income as a result of people ceasing to claim.

The move is part of a county-wide ‘sweep’ by all six district councils, the police and Gloucestershire County Council. Similar exercises are taking place in Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Forest of Dean, Stroud and Cotswolds.

Mark Sheldon, director of resources commented: “The council has a legal and social responsibility to make sure that it collects all the council tax so that everyone in Cheltenham gets value for money. Any discounts that are given reduce the amount of revenue we are able to collect. It is important that we make sure only those people that are due to get a discount are awarded one.”

It is aimed at making sure that everyone who claims is entitled to the discount. Where these reviews

The review will specifically target residents whose circumstances differ from those recorded on the

council’s systems and who may therefore no longer be eligible for the discount. It is being carried out as part of the council’s policy to crack down on fraud and corruption. Anyone who wants to check and make sure that they are claiming correctly or notify a change of circumstances can contact the council tax helpline at the council on 01242 264161 or email counciltax@cheltenham.gov.uk At the same time anyone who lives on their own and isn't receiving the discount should contact the helpline to find out if they are entitled to it.

£30,000 match-funding up for grabs as community pride scheme launches Welcome to PRESTBURY CARS OF CHELTENHAM Turn to page 22 108-114 Prestbury Road, Cheltenham GL52 2DP Email: sales@prestburycars.co.uk Enquiries: 01242 228749 Mobile: 07831 507825

or the fifth year running, community groups are being invited to bid for a share of £30,000 to help towards local projects. Cheltenham Borough Council’s community pride scheme has so far given more than £200,000 to eighty communitybased initiatives since it launched in 2006. This year’s scheme is all about encouraging local groups to be able to do more in their communities and the council would be interested in receiving applications which support: · Voluntary work · Training courses for volunteers and paid staff · The purchase of equipment to enable a group to be more effective in improving their neighbourhood · Access to advice and support so that groups can take on public access and/or public services · The use of technology and social media to create a sense of community

F

· The organisation of community events and/or environmental improvements to promote community resilience and sustainability Councillor Steve Jordan, leader of the council said: ‘’This scheme has proved very popular in the past and supported many small projects around Cheltenham. Once again, we are looking for wide-ranging applications which will have a direct benefit to the local community. Funding for public services continues to fall, so it is even more important that we tap into opportunities for communities to support themselves and I hope this funding can help build the capacity to do that.’’ The application guidelines and application form are now available on the council’s website: www.cheltenham.gov.uk/communitypride. The closing date is Friday 1 July. An assessment panel will meet shortly after to ensure that a list of projects recommended for approval is brought to cabinet on 26 July for approval.

Walk well in Cheltenham D ue to popular demand, Cheltenham’s award winning health walks are expanding with the launch of evening walks. The walks are free of charge and open to all – from first time walkers to experienced ramblers – and are led by trained walk leaders.

Cheltenham Borough Council’s ‘Walk Well’ scheme has received national accreditation from Natural England which means that the walks meet the criteria set by health professionals. The new evening walks, which last around forty minutes, will take place every Tuesday (starting on 10 May) from the University of Gloucestershire Park campus and every Thursday (from 12 May) at the front entrance to the Beechwood shopping centre, both starting at 6pm. They complement the existing programme of day time walks. Rowena Tassell, the council’s healthy lifestyles officer said: ‘’The walks are always popular as they are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Some people join in to improve their fitness, some are referred by their GP and others come along simply because they enjoy the fresh air. The walks are also a great way of meeting others. We now hope to pass on the positive, healthy message of walking to those who are at work during the day and not able to join us on our day time walks. "Thanks goes to the trained volunteers who guide the walks as without them, it wouldn’t be possible for us to offer this free activity." The walks are flat and where possible roads are avoided. For more information about the walks or to train as a volunteer talk leader, contact Rowena Tassell on 01242 775202 or email Rowena.tassell@cheltenham.gov.uk

The Bath Road - a unique and special place n these times of growth and out of town shopping, it is a delight to happen across pockets of independent traders who are working actively to ensure that the happy and friendly service you find with local shopping continues to thrive.

I

When I was a little girl, my mum didn’t drive and so we had to walk to the local shops for everything ranging from groceries, prescriptions, wool (mum was a knitter), newspaper and to sweets on a Friday as that was treat day in our home. Wednesdays always found the shops closing at lunchtime and, of course, the shops didn’t on a Sunday. I realise that life has changed considerably since those lovely times of fond memories with my mum, but the enjoyment and pleasure gained from walking through a shop door and being spoken to by someone who recognises you and remembers your name still remains. The Bath Road is a place where people know each other and we are all proud to not only own shops on this special road but to also live close by. My little family actually moved to Cheltenham some eight years ago and it was The Bath Road that drew us here from Surrey. The future success of this special road lies with those of us who run our shops, cafes, restaurants and businesses and The Bath Road Traders is an active and positive group of people who work closely together purely for that purpose. To enhance and move forward our efforts, we are looking to develop The Friends of The Bath Road which we hope will encourage local residents and business people alike to work side by side to maintain the uniqueness of this special road. The Bath Road Traders managed a recent petition

and campaign to ensure that the toilets in the car park remain open, organised a DIY Street Clean and are working closely with Cheltenham Connect to hold a Royal Wedding Street Party. Our Christmas Lights Turn On event grows annually and we are about to launch our second Coupons Booklet to 6,000 local residents. These activities, we feel, help to ensure The Bath Road remains a clean, fun and topical place to visit, shop and eat and we all look forward to welcoming you soon. We are working closely with Cheltenham Connect and since this group was founded it in 2009, more than 85 local sponsors have supported the Cheltenham Connect initiative and it has been the recipient of two Community Pride grants. It seems that the Big Society is alive and well in Cheltenham. On top of that, the group is also developing a major project to improve the Bath Road so that traders and residents will soon be able to sponsor elements of a modular street planting scheme - see www.connectmystreet.org. Cheltenham Connect runs many of its activities in and around the Bath Road. In fact one of its subgroups, Buy Local, emphasises how thinking about and buying local protects our local shops and preserves our community The group is currently planning its second Community, Craft and Music Festival on the 25th and 26th of June that will be a real celebration of local skills and musical talent, which aims to attract around 3,000 locals over the two days. There will be more than 40 craft and trader stalls (centred around The Norwood Arms) and a fantastic variety of local singers, musicians and bands (based around The Exmouth Arms). Come visit and discover for yourself the magic and special place that is The Bath Road. Lizzie Smith (owner of COOK) Chairperson Bath Road Traders

he Vale’s most famous and favourite vegetable - the asparagus - comes to fruition.

T

The growing season is short, usually a couple of months from mid to late April, but up until the end of June there is a chance for everyone to enjoy the tastiest spears of asparagus grown on your doorstep. The round of Gras in Badsey is one of the local restaurants taking advantage of the availability of the freshest asparagus and has incorporated it into its menu. And as the only pub in the world to be named after asparagus what better place to enjoy a fine asparagus dish. It all started in 1968 when former landlord Buster

May

Mustoe renamed the pub The Round of Gras having previously been know as the Royal Oak. But going even further back for more than a century the Vale of Evesham has been at the heart of British asparagus growing and now even has its own festival to celebrate the little spear. Way before it became synonymous with the heart of England the Greeks and Romans loved eating it in season and even dried it to eat in the winter months. The Greeks even believed it had medical properties. The Romans brought it to England in the 16th century and by the 17th century it was being grown commercially in London. By the 19th century the capital city was becoming too built up and so asparagus fields were set up in the Vale of Evesham and it has been the vegetable’s home ever since.
