Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents On the first Wednesday afternoon of the new term, I was able to take a stroll around the grounds. Tennis and cricket were in full flow and the boundaries were ringed with parents. It must be the Summer Term! And a strange shape it is too. After just two weeks it is the May Day Bank Holiday Exeat and then after another five, Half-Term; seven weeks in total. The second half of term consists of four weeks. Therefore it is essential that not only do we, once again, hit the ground running, but also that we continue to work right up to the end of term. Whilst there will be the normal panoply of enjoyable events which characterise the end of both the Summer Term and the academic year, it is essential that academic work continues right up to the start of the summer holidays. To that end, although we have retained some of the events which made up activities week in certain year groups, or we have replaced them with trips with a greater academic bias, ‘Activities Week’ as such no longer exists. Although I fully appreciate the value of off site, residential trips, I am also mindful that not only have most year groups already experienced such events earlier in the academic year, but also that we are about to embark on a long holiday. To sacrifice valuable teaching time at this stage in the year, especially in the older years is therefore not appropriate. Staff INSET involved a visit by Dick Moore who spoke powerfully about the mental health challenges facing children today. This is something which we will be following up with further staff training and, as recommended by the Independent Schools Inspectorate’s report, development of our Personal, Social and Health Education programme. My thanks to those parents who attended the session run by Dick in the evening. I know that many found this extremely valuable. Over the Easter holiday there have been developments in the staff room. Julia Evetts gave birth to Monty James on 31 March, weighing in at a healthy 8lbs 8ozs. Miss Kelly Stovold, who is engaged to be married to Mr McKegney, at present a teacher at College, will move with him when he takes up his new post at Radley College, south of Oxford. We will be very sorry to lose Kelly, a talented teacher both in and out of the classroom. Mrs Deborah Bond, who has been at The Prep for 10 years, embarks on an exciting new chapter in her life as she moves to the UAE with her husband. Again, we are sorry to lose such an experienced and compassionate teacher but wish Deborah well. Mrs Sarah Dawson, our Librarian, who has injected new vitality into the Library operation moves to teach History at College and the search to replace her will be a difficult one such is the drive and determination that she has brought to this post. And finally, I am genuinely delighted to congratulate Rubeeya Masood on her promotion to the post of House Parent at The Dragon School in Oxford. This is an outstanding achievement. It is worth noting that The Prep has now produced a House Parent, a Deputy Head and a Head from within our ranks, such is the calibre of the teachers that we are attracting. The process to recruit for these positions is well underway and I will report back to parents when all appointments have been made. My best wishes to all for a successful Summer Term! This clashes with the planned MUFTI day, which has subsequently been moved to Friday 27 May. 2
Upper School The summer brings (hopefully) warmer weather and a time of change in Upper School. Year 8 are thinking about their Common Entrance examinations and the series of events and activities after that, whilst Year 7 are starting to plan their letters of application for the roles of Prefect and other positions of responsibility. Whilst so much hard work is taking place, it’s even more important that the boys and girls take time to enjoy the co-curricular activities, appreciate their friendships and make sure they recharge their batteries having some fun! I am delighted to see that the new Peer Mentoring scheme for Year 7 pupils has attracted such a great intake and we see our first session on this next week. And of course, Music, Drama and Sport continue to be an integral part of Upper School life – I am looking forward to seeing all our pupils involved in the many concerts, competitions, trips and of course Sports Days later in the term. In the meantime, I would encourage all Upper School pupils to relish all the different aspects of the term, and to put in as much as they possibly can. That way, they are sure to get a lot back in return. Mrs Sarah Reid

Don't forget to visit our four new residents in The Prep Farm! These four pigs have been snuffling around their pen and discovering all the interesting smells in their new home. They have been particularly intrigued by the chickens in the pen next door!

SATIPS Art Exhibition 2016 In preparation for the exciting SATIPS National Prep Schools' Art Exhibition later this month, the Art Department has been a busy hive of activity! During the past four weeks, hundreds of pieces of artwork, from over 50 schools all over the country, have been arriving at The Prep. The artwork, which will be displayed in an Exhibition forming a journey around the heart of our School, has been sorted into categories and photographed. Professional display boards have been made and arranged in situ on the mezzanine floor above the Assembly Hall. Now affectionately known as 'The Gallery’ a small team of dedicated, artistic staff and volunteers have been busily velcro-ing work to the boards and walls. There are over 400 pieces; from large collaborative works, which have had to be creatively hung, to delightfully delicate 3-dimensional pieces. The variety is mind-boggling! Having opened all the parcels herself, photographed and hung many of the pieces, Head of Art, Alayne Parsley said "I keep seeing new and different works! The wealth of talent and ideas is astounding!" The Exhibition will open on Friday 22 April 16.00 until 18.30 for a special Preview, exclusively for Cheltenham Prep pupils, staff and parents. All are welcome, so please do drop by. On Sunday 24 April, from 10.00 until 16.00 the Exhibition is then open for a friends and family viewing. Please do feel free to visit us then. You are welcome to visit as many times as you like! After Sunday, viewing of the Exhibition is by appointment only, and we are proud to be welcoming a number of local schools to visit during this time. The Gallery will also be open at lunchtimes for Prep pupils to enjoy and will form the basis of their Art lessons during the two weeks. The Exhibition closes on 6 May, after which time we will then be working towards the Exhibition in April 2017! So, children, if your artwork didn't appear in this year's display, then there is always next year.

Design & Technology In Design & Technology, Year 8s have been finishing off their ‘Wooden Knots’ this week, which they constructed during the Spring Term. Having made them, they can now assemble and disassemble them and will be challenging their parents at home!
These Year 5 boys and girls have just finished making their ‘Fidgety Phillips’ as well. They started off by making the body of Phillip out of wood, before giving him a tunic out of felt.
Personal Achievement Laura Bingham represented the School exceptionally at the National Schools Equestrian Association Regional Inter-schools Show Jumping competition at Allens Hill Equestrian Centre in Worcestershire. As part of the Cheltenham College team, Laura and her team members were placed 4th in the competition. Well done!

Only 1% of the world's water is fresh!
Lower School On Wednesday, Year 3 went to Severn Trent Sewage Works in Hayden Lane and learnt about recycling in all its glory. They know that the 3 P’s are really important and if you want further information on that, you can question them though there is a big clue in the photo! They were really interested in the numbers: 70% of the Earth is covered in water: of which 97% is salt water, 2% is ice and only 1% of the world’s water is fresh. A child in the Developing World often only has 10 litres of water a day for every need - washing, drinking, cooking. Whereas in the UK flushing the toilet takes 10 litres of water, leaving the tap running whilst brushing your teeth for 2 minutes Prep for The Week Issue Number 1824 15 April 2016
Where does all the water go? uses 12 litres and using a hosepipe to clean the car uses 1000 litres an hour. After hearing this the children were pretty keen to change the way they, and you, use water. 7

The Year 5s took to the field for the first time, before we had even had a training session and put in a great performance against our friends from Wycliffe. This year group had endured a tough summer as Year 4s, but this was a different team – not just in terms of personnel, but also in terms of attitude. We approached the game with one clear objective – to act as a team at all times – and the boys took to this with aplomb. Our calling and quick running with the bat soon built a score that was supplemented by the extras from Wycliffe and left us with a solid total to defend. Once we took the field, the boys came to life, every ball was attacked, every dot ball was applauded and the team exploded at every wicket. Our steady and accurate bowling kept the score low until the last 6 overs, when the wickets began to steadily fall and the game was ended in the final over, with a couple of quickfire wickets. A good win to start the season.
