Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents In my last assembly, I was privileged to award a Headmaster’s Commendation to Izzy Sneyd for “a small but significant act of kindness”. In the assembly prior to that, I had watched as she had realised another child did not have a hymn book, and quickly offered hers and shared it. This was on the same day that we had listened to “Heroes” by David Bowie, because we can all be heroes! How? Simply by remembering that it is the small, everyday acts of kindness and concern which impact most significantly on the well being of others. Yes, the music of Bowie and Wake up to Wogan did act as the soundtrack to the lives of many and the contribution of these two talented artists should be celebrated and remembered. But today, and every day, it is the behaviours of the ordinary man, woman, boy and girl which are more likely to send you to sleep happy and contented. How pleasing is it when a pedestrian thanks a driver at a zebra crossing? What is better than a transaction completed in a shop in a mutually respectful and cheerful manner? What about the look between two like minded adults when one opens the door for the other and is thanked in a genuine manner? How reassuring must it

Check out these funky colours

be to know that your child is surrounded by others who, on the whole, are fully aware of the consequences of their actions on the happiness and fulfillment of others? The Prep is not perfect because we all, I especially, have our faults. But the ambition will always be there to create an atmosphere of care, conern and mutual respect. My brief words to those who attended last week’s extremely successful swimming gala could not express the admiration for the attitudes of your children as recognised by the inspection team. Of all the positive feedback that we received, this was, without doubt in my mind, the most pleasing and re-assuring. Mr Jon Whybrow

Kingfishers The children in the Cottage have been loving the topic this term: Dinosaurs. Some of the many activities have included digging up bones in our outdoor excavation site, as well as inspecting, drawing and measuring them. The boys and girls used their feet to measure a giant dinosaur footprint they found on the floor - which Dinosaur do you think it might have come from? Playing in the dinosaur swamp has also been very popular, and the children have all made their own dinosaur hats to wear around school. Digging up bones in our excavation site!

The children in Year 1 performed their very own Jungle themed assembly! They thought of their own words and showed off their dancing and acting skills to great delight. We had pretty, dancing flamingos, quick step tigers, break dancing frogs, cheeky monkeys, colourful parrots and stomping elephants. The tour guides led us through the Jungle safely, with lots of laughs along the way! Well done Year 1.

Lower School Viking Day Last week, the children in Year 4 recreated their own Viking village based upon all they have learnt so far this term. All of the time spent researching facts about the Vicious Vikings came in very handy!

On Wednesday morning, Year 3 visited Cheltenham Town Hall to watch the Music for Youth Prom. This showcase of local talent from in and around Gloucestershire attracted many schools from around the area. Year 3 enjoyed their front row seats in a packed Town Hall!

Using craft materials, pupils built 3D houses with wattle and daub features (a building technique the Vikings used to use) and they thatched the roofs with hay. To protect the village from attack, the children made fences out of lollypop sticks. In the afternoon, the children even made their own Viking people for the village! The figures wore tunics and belts made by the pupils, just as the Vikings would have worn.

The performance began with the Greater Gwent Percussion ensemble, performing a variety of rhythms using step ladders. Their performance seemed to go down a treat! This was followed by vocal acts including The Arias, performing an Ed Sheeran number, and Wydean Gospel Choir. Their performances were received with whoops and cheers. Next to perform were the Flash Mob Ninjas on their trombones. They performed a range of jazz pieces including a popular favourite, Feelin’ Good. Finally, the percussion ensemble rounded the performance off with another piece they had composed and arranged themselves. The children particularly enjoyed being able to take part in the concert. They were taught the bubble gum warm-up as well as a tricky rhythm which everyone performed as part of a round. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for both pupils and staff. We even recognised an ex-Cheltenham College pupil on the organising team for the event. Here's what some of our Year 3s thought:

‘I liked the Gwent percussion because they used ladders instead of instruments.’ - Andrew 'I really liked the bubble gum warm up because it was funny.’ - Thomas Prep for The Week Issue Number 1818 5 February 2016

Pro Corda Chamber Music Festival Our string trio, Thea Peterken, Anya James and Violet Bailey, excelled this week when they performed in Coventry as part of the Pro Corda Chamber Music Festival. They performed two pieces in the preliminary rounds: Ostrich Waltz and Tempo di Minuetto. The adjudicator provided the trio with a few handy tips about how to perfect the piece. Overall, she was very complimentary and looked forward to hearing our trio again. This was excellent preparation for their upcoming performance in London next week, as part of the Cheltenham College 175th Showcase Concert at Cadogan Hall. Well done girls!

Letters from Year 7 & 8 Being a guide for the Kingfishers Experience, Pre-Prep Open Morning "Throughout the tour I enjoyed the calm and friendly attitude from both the visitors and my fellow tour guides. It was a pleasant morning; I was able to revisit past experiences in Kingfishers and tell our visitors how fun Kingfishers really is! The parents I hosted had previously been to Cheltenham College Prep - I loved this! They informed me about the old school and I could tell them how it had changed."

The Headmaster's Assembly "There are many types of strengths: physical, emotional, and the strength to do what is right. Sometimes it is hard to do what is right as there are multiple temptations. The strength to do what is right, in a way, is harder to keep up than push ups!

All will be welcome to The Prep’s first LAMDA review in Lake House at 17:00 on Thursday 11 February. This will be a selection of short, entertaining performances by twelve Middle and Upper School pupils who are taking their drama exams at the end of term. There will be actors, lights, costumes and half an hour of fun!

At the end of the day, it may be more important to acquire the strength of discipline rather than of core muscles. Discipline, when not kept, can have serious consequences."

Bakery Club Pupils at Bakery Club have been very busy since the start of Spring term. We have made pizza pin wheels, a delicious savoury dish with ham and cheese. This required making a dough, rolling it out, sprinkling on the ingredients, rolling it up into a long sausage and then slicing and baking it. The results were impressive!

Over the last two weeks we have been baking sweet treats: chocolate slice and rainbow cookies. Both turned out very well, with pupils asking for the recipes to try out again at home! The biscuit recipe required the yolk of an egg to be separated from the white – quite a tricky challenge to achieve. They all managed it very well and we only lost a couple of eggs. The pupils are learning and applying many skills including measuring, maths skills, co-operation, following instructions, teamwork, patience, listening, measuring, tidying up and, of course, baking skills! The pupils are all a pleasure to work with and are a lovely group who are very supportive of each other.

Team of the Week – U9 A The girls displayed not only excellent elements of netball during this game, but also brilliant levels of sportsmanship and teamwork. They went into an early lead during the first quarter with the girls in the centre third demonstrating strong and accurate passing. During the second and third quarters, with continual rotation of our shooters, they managed to score more and more goals. The accuracy of The Prep's shooters was excellent, as was our strong defence at the back, which meant that each time Richard Pate's did manage to reach their goal third the ball was turned over. By the fourth quarter, the girls continued to fight for each ball and pass to each other having created space first. A fantastic win girls, thoroughly deserved by each member of the team.

The girls started the tournament with a convincing win over Westonbirt. The ball flowed well in the middle and the shooters moved really well in to the D. They were put under more pressure against Prior Park, but upped their game and defended brilliantly. The toughest match in the group was definitely against Pinewood, and the centre pass was converted into a goal each time. However, some brilliant interceptions by The Prep's defence meant that we were able to move the ball quickly up to our attackers and some confident shooting meant we pulled one ahead. Pinewood were a strong team, quickly pulling one back; the final score was 5-5. Through to the semi-finals, the girls played Cheam School. It was a superb match with the girls giving 110% in both attack and defence! A real team effort secured a win and The Prep went through to the final! The girls started strong and were 1- 0 up in the first two minutes. Tiredness eventually slowed them down and they just couldn't keep up with the very strong opposing team. The girls gave so much effort and did us proud. They should be extremely pleased with their efforts and the huge progress they have made.

Team of the Week - U 10 A Having hosted a festival where we perhaps did not do ourselves justice last week, the boys were keen to make amends against Clifton. The opening exchanges saw us enjoy much of the possession but we were caught in possession too often and when we did pass, we failed to use the full width of the pitch to open up space. That said, our defence was solid and our goalkeeper was largely untroubled for the duration of the half. During the interval, we agreed that we needed to show greater urgency in all facets of the game. It was good to see that this advice was acted upon and we denied our visitors both time and space in the second half. When we were in possession, we started to play a faster game and enjoyed particular success moving the ball down the right flank and it was from here that the first goal came. Frustratingly, Clifton immediately drew level when we failed to clear the ball from the restart. The team stuck to their “pass and move philosophy and gaps in their opposition defence began to appear. Forcing a series of short corners, we eventually scored a second, well-worked goal to make the game safe. Ultimately, the boys played with tenacity and intelligence and I hope that we will employ these qualities from the outset in our future matches.

Cross Country and Swimming Girls' Cross Country Relays at Warwick School On Friday, some of our budding U9, U10 and U11 girls' Cross Country runners had the chance to participate in an unusual event: a Cross Country Team Relay. We travelled to Warwick Preparatory School who had invited us, along with a number of other schools against whom we rarely compete: Spratton Prep, Harbury, Croft Prep, Manor Prep and Crackley Prep. It was a bitter, windy day - perfect for Cross Country! After much tactical discussion over who should run in what order, all three teams gave it their all and really pushed themselves hard for their team mates. The U11’s came 6th, the U9’s came 4th and the U10’s ran superbly to come 2nd against some very impressive running from Manor Prep. It was an enjoyable day and staff were mightily impressed with the girls' grit and determination in their races - well done! House Cross Country Relays Each House had selected one boy and one girl from each year group to take part in the cross country relays this week. The race required one lap of the course per person before handing on to the next runner. For the first year ever, we added a tactical element and instead of running in year order, in Middle and Upper School the Houses decided their running order. This made for a very unpredictable and exciting finish! The final results were made of the individual boys' and girls' races' combined totals. 1st – PERSIA (18 pts) ATHENS, ROME, SPARTA, TROY (all tied on 13 pts) 6th – CORINTH (8 pts) House Swimming Gala Last Saturday's House Swimming Gala was a huge success. Thank you so much to all of the parents who supported the event and added to the atmosphere (and the noise) on the day. The children really felt a part of their House and the excitement of that final full house relay race is something that the organising staff will remember for a long time. 1st – ATHENS (330 pts)

2nd – PERSIA (321 pts)

3rd – ROME (317 pts)

4th – CORINTH (296 pts)

5th – SPARTA (265 pts)

6th – TROY (232 pts)

On Tuesday 26 January, Mr Baird took an assembly about Rempstone Adventure Camp. Rempstone is a camp that Mr and Mrs Baird both attended when they were at prep school and continue to volunteer at every summer. The camp is an Adventure Holiday for boys and girls in Years 6 to 11. It takes place during August, lasting for 10 days. As well as a fun-filled programme of activities, games and visits, the camp encourages Christian values. All the information you need about the camp should be either in the leaflets handed out on Tuesday, or found on the website (www.rempstoneadventurecamp.org.uk), but please do email (d.baird@cheltenhamcollege.org) if you have any further questions.
