Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents The themes of the conference, which I attended this week, concentrated on the care of children, their physical safety and their mental resilience. I travelled up to the conference venue on the day that hundreds of thousands of children were kept at home to avoid sitting tests. On the following day, we were addressed by one of the ministers, Nicholas Gibb MP, responsible for those tests. As a headmaster responsible for putting children through the rigour of academic and other types of examination, I daily ask that the staff not only strive for excellence, but also, as importantly, I demand that they support the children, all of whom will react to pressure in different ways.

And, you as parents, will also be a critical part of this equation, offering your own different styles of encouragement. Essentially, together we must prepare our children for the stresses and pressures of adult life and, testing in the classroom, on the stage, on the field and in a variety of social situations is central to this preparation.

One of the 'stages' on which children are tested is House Sports Day. This event has evolved from a day for just the athletic stars to one in which all are included. As much care as possible is taken to ensure that races are 'handicapped' to offer all a chance of winning at some stage without sacrificing the integrity of competition. Much of the children's effort is centred on their house and much organisation goes into reconciling the house effort with individual wishes. Therefore, please can I emphasise that all children in Years 3 to 8 are expected to attend and withdrawals, at any stage, undermine the integrity of the event.

Further to my last mention of classes for next September, I would like to confirm that details will be published in the week beginning 13 June.

In the interim, we will be continuing with the relevant discussions.

I am pleased to announce the appointments of Mrs Conner and Mrs Reeves to the positions in Kingfishers of Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Deputy Head (Academic) respectively. Mirroring the structure used by the Prep School as a whole, these positions will support Mrs Buttress and, in effect, replace Miss Sheldon who is moving on to a Deputy Head role at St Gregory's in Cheltenham.

Welcome to Our School!

We have been lucky to welcome lots of friends and neighbours, from schools around the area, to The Prep this week! Art pupils of various ages pupils from Airthrie School, Berkhampstead School, Moreton-in-Marsh Primary, St James' Primary, Holme Grange, The Downs Malvern and Christ Church have enjoyed creative workshops held in the SATIPS Art Exhibition which opened at The Prep last week.

“The SATIPS exhibition is always fantastic, and this year’s display has been no exception,” said Head of Art at Cheltenham College Prep, Alayne Parsley. “We've thoroughly enjoyed hosting workshops and art lessons with a number of local schools, and I hope the visiting pupils have been impressed and inspired by their visit to the exhibition!”

22 pupils from Gloucester Road Primary School in Cheltenham also visited The Prep to have fun in the new, university-standard Science labs and learn about electricity.

Working with Cheltenham Prep Science staff to carry out experiments, the Year 4 boys and girls built fruit batteries, used the Van de Graaff machine to investigate static electricity and had balloon races. “They had great fun using the Van de Graaff generator and took turns to use the flow of electrons to make their hair stand on end or ‘shock’ their friends, which proved to be great fun!” said Mrs Faye Wells, Head of Science at The Prep. Cheltenham Prep enjoys a longstanding relationship with Gloucester Road Primary School, and looks forward to welcoming its pupils to The Prep in the future.

Kingfishers Kingfishers opened the Cheltenham Performing Arts Festival on Tuesday morning with two fantastic songs.

They performed Sporting World (a set piece) and our chosen song Hear the Wind.

The children competed along with five other schools from around the local area. The comments they received were fantastic and the children were particularly commended on their enthusiasm and energy when singing. As this was the Kingfishers' first time entering a choir into the festival, all were extremely pleased with coming second overall! We very much look forward to entering the festival again next year.

Lower School On Wednesday, Year 3 welcomed Year 2 into Lower School so they could share a break time. This was their third visit to Lower School and is part of a series of events to introduce life in Lower School to the children in Kingfishers. The Year 3s enjoyed seeing their Year 2 buddies again and spent a happy half hour showing the Year 2s around the Lower School play area and talking to them about what is is like to be in Year 3.

The weather was very kind and it was lovely to see everyone, including the teachers, joining in with tag games and generally having a relaxing and social time.

In the fabulous weather, all the Lower School girls headed up to Reeves Field armed with rounders equipment, sunhats and water bottles this week. Our opponents were Wycliffe School and, before they arrived, the girls warmed up carefully and took time to practise throwing, catching and batting. The matches were hard fought, especially in Year 3, which ended in a draw. The Year 4 girls played two matches and came out on top in both. The teachers were especially pleased with how the girls fielded as a team and batted with determination. Afterwards, all the teams enjoyed a match tea on the Headmaster’s Lawn in the spring sunshine.

Support for War-torn Bosnia On Tuesday 3 May, Simon Evlyn-Bufton gave a presentation to his Year 7 classmates on his participation in his father’s charity work in Bosnia. Mr Evlyn-Bufton served as part of the British Army on behalf of the United Nations in helping the people affected by the Bosnian War. After this tour of duty finished, Mr Evlyn-Bufton set up a charity that is helping the children of Gorazde, a town that was involved in the conflict.

Simon told the audience about his father’s involvement in the area, both as a soldier and now doing charitable work. Simon explained that the charity aims to help the children, particularly at the local school, but also exists to help remember four young British soldiers who sadly died whilst on service with Mr Evlyn-Bufton, protecting the townspeople of Gorazde.

During the Summer Term last year, The Prep collected a large number of old books, largely unused textbooks, for the charity. Mr EvlynBufton took these out to Gorazde, for the school. Simon showed the amazing journey that the books took in order to arrive safely and the Prep for The Week Issue Number 1827 6 May 2016

Simon revealed the excellent work that the charity has been involved in at the school, providing new classrooms and a playground. He also read the personal thanks of the Headmistress to The Prep for the impact that their donations have made.

It was fascinating to hear about Simon's own experiences, particularly the charity run that he took part in. Simon’s father ran a marathon which ended in Gorazde and Simon, a keen runner himself, joined in for the last 8 miles: a fantastic achievement. There was a great picture (above) of Simon running across the bridge of the town during the final stretch.

that he has been involved in. Year 7 were full of questions and Simon fielded these with great skill. The conversations continued well after the presentation ended and there was a real interest displayed by the pupils, eager to find out more.

It was a superb experience for the audience and we look forward to hearing more about the charity and Simon’s involvement in the future.

Year 7 have also been given the wonderful opportunity to follow up this talk with a visit to the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum, kindly organised by Mr Evlyn-Bufton. It promises to be a brilliant extension of Simon’s presentation.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1827 6 May 2016

Bakery Club This term we welcome a new group of Middle School pupils to Bakery Club. We started off by making pastry for giant jam tarts! Baking the pastry ‘blind’ before adding the filling ensured the pastry base was well cooked. We used unsalted butter to give a delicious flavour to the pastry; although breaking the butter down took quite a lot of effort. It was worth it! Many pupils decorated the top of their jam tart with lattice work or cut out pastry shapes.

We have also made some tasty looking cheese scones with fresh herbs. Beaten egg mixed with some milk was used to give a glaze on the top of the scones and some pupils sprinked extra cheese on too, before baking them.

Pupils could add fresh Rosemary and chopped Chives to the mixture for added flavour. These scones prove very popular each time we make them. A gentle reminder: please can all Bakery Club pupils bring a tupperware box or tin and an apron each week, thanks.

Team of the Week – 1sts Tennis Our three pairs of U10 girls travelled down to Wycliffe for their first tennis fixture of the summer term. Training had gone well, between hail showers and baltic conditions, and the girls felt prepared.

After a quick recap of the scoring system and tennis etiquette, the matches got under way. It was clear our girls have been working hard on their over arm serves, with quite a few hitting the target and many exciting rallies happening on each court. Over the course of the three matches each pair took part in, the improvement was clear to see, and our girls finished the victors overall, with an accumulative score sheet of 6 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw. Things to work on, but the girls obviously had a great time and should be proud of their first venture in the unchartered seas of competitive tennis. We face Bromsgrove on Saturday. Bring it on!

Cheltenham Prep 3rd XI (61)lost to Abberley Prep 3rd XI (62-8) by 2 wickets In a 20/20 format Abberley won the toss and elected to field. Abberley had just beaten Bromsgrove by seven wickets in their previous fixture and they proved formidable opposition with tight bowling complimented by sharp fielding. In the thirteen overs faced by our batsmen - eight players scored two runs or less whilst three players carried the team by scoring double figures. Four run outs did not aid Cheltenham's cause and they were skittled for 61 after just thirteen overs.

In reply Cheltenham decided to follow England's tactics in the 20/20 final and open with spin claiming a wicket with the first ball bowled of the Abberley innings! Indeed, after just seven overs, Abberley were 25 for 5! Game on! However, our pace attack could not replicate the success of our spinners and Abberley reached their target in the fifteenth over with eight wickets down.

It was a close and exciting game. Both sets of players carried themselves correctly on and off the field and both umpires agreed that it was a super afternoon's cricket played in great spirit.
