Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents Class groupings Today we distribute the class lists for the next academic year. Using a system called ‘The Hand of Friendship', we can ensure that every child will be in a class with at least one of their five closest friends. We understand that this will not be enough for every child, some of whom form close attachments to one friend in particular, but it is the only fair and mathematically feasible way in which to do this. We change the classes round for two reasons. We feel that we should encourage children to develop their friendship groups and we sometimes need to take the opportunity to dismantle classes who have not gelled together. It should be remembered that when the children are in their class groups, the opportunities for socialising are minimal as they are in lessons. Instead, this should happen at morning break, lunch break and en route for activities and games. I feel that too much importance has been placed on which class a child is in. I accept that they register together and that they will, more often than not, move around together. However, it remains that opportunities for socialising are greater at the other times that I have already mentioned.

Staffing

I am now able to inform parents of the changes and additions to the staff room for the next academic year. Head of Lower School Mrs Amanda Grieves will take up her position in September. This is an internal appointment, Mrs Grieves is, at present, teaching English, Maths and Games in Years 5 and 6. I commend to the parents the work of Mr Andy Theedom who has been the interim post holder. Head of Religious Studies Mr Tom Patterson, who at present holds a similar post at the Peponi School in Kenya, will take up this post in September. Educated at Sherborne School, Tom attended The University of Manchester and did his teacher training at Buckingham University. Prior to teaching in Kenya, Tom taught at his alma mater. He will also assist with games. Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages Mrs Sandra Parish, at present the Head of Department at the Tenby International School in Kuala Lumpur, has Prep for The Week Issue Number 1832 17 June 2016

been appointed to teach French and Spanish. Educated at the Notre Dame La Riche Ecole in Tours, Sandra then attended the University of Tours, completing her teacher training at the University of the West of England. Her first teaching post was at Dauntseys School after which she spent time in schools in Cairo. Teacher of Science and Maths Mrs Lucy Baird is at present completing her PGCE training at The Prep. She also makes a significant contribution, alongside her husband Dickon, to the Boarding House. Teacher in Lower School Mrs Kate Mackman will replace Miss Kelly Stovold who leaves to join her fiancĂŠe, Mr Charlie McKegney, who has been appointed to a post at Radley College. Teacher of Maths Mr Thomas Yiend will teach Maths and Games. He is married to Mrs Gonzales, a teacher of Spanish at College and tutor in Chandos. He joins us from Watermoor Church of England School where he is a class teacher and Head of Computing. He will make a strong contribution to Kingfisher and Lower School games as well as boarding. Deputy Head (Operations) Mr Bob Wells has been appointed to the post of Deputy Head (Operations) The Deputy Head (Pastoral), a position presently held by Noll Jenkins, has now taken on the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). This has impacted on his responsibilities, some of which have been moved into the remit of the Deputy Head (Operations). Head of Wellbeing Mr Fergus McCracken has been appointed internally to the post of Head of Wellbeing. This was in response to the absorption of his DSL role into that of the Deputy 2

Head (Pastoral) and to the identification by the inspection report of greater emphasis needing to be placed on Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). Assistant House Parent Miss Stacy Ramsay has been appointed to this position. At present Miss Ramsay is the Head of Girls’ Games, Swimming and PE, and will retain this role. Teacher of English Ms Orla Sheehan has been appointed to teach English and Games. At present, Ms Sheehan teaches at Highstead Grammar School in Kent. Part-time teacher of History Mr Duncan Simpson will relinquish some of his PE teaching to move into the classroom. He has a degree in Ancient History and taught History at his previous school. Part-time teacher of Art Mrs Jill Douglas, at present a part-time teacher of Drama, will take on this role for the next academic year. Librarian Mrs Pippa Carson has been appointed to the position of Librarian. Lower School Teaching Assistant Miss Sarah Matthews will move from Kingfishers to Lower School to fulfil this role. Promotions I am delighted to report that Miss Rubeeya Masood has been appointed to the post of House Parent at The Dragon School, Oxford. This means that The Prep has, in the past two years, produced a Head, a Deputy Head and a House Parent.

Saturday School Arrangements A parental survey has been undertaken to judge the initial success of the new arrangements. The headlines of this survey are: • 40% of parents responded to this survey • More parents of boys responded than those of girls • Over 80% of the respondents were the parents of day pupils • 79% support the new Saturday arrangements. 5% definitely did not • 56% thought that the arrangements need no adjustments; 44% did, so the comments in this section will be used to adjust arrangements where possible • 84% thought that the range of activities is appropriate • 82% thought that the arrangements for Saturdays are communicated effectively During this past academic year, we have been visited by Clifton College Prep School, who will copy our model from September 2016 and I can also report that St Hugh’s Prep, Faringdon, will cease to run any academic lessons on Saturday morning from September 2017. My conclusions from this are that the 60% who did not offer an opinion are either satisfied or didn’t think that by making their views known anything would change. What is clear from the survey is that the system is not perfect and that I will need to respond to the comments contained in this section and do my best to alter arrangements accordingly. Also apparent is that we have made the right decision to shorten the day; 79% support these arrangements and a host of schools are following our lead. Jon Whybrow

Young Scientists' Day is a Big Bang Cheltenham Prep were delighted to host the annual Young Scientists' Day, in partnership with Cheltenham Science Festival. This years’ theme was Space, and pupils from surrounding schools came to experience an exciting carousel of Science and Design Technology sessions, exploring the universe. In the Biology activity, pupils investigated unknown soil samples in order to identify life. They looked for signs of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins as possible indicators of living creatures. The results from the investigations mirrored those done in the Viking missions that first analysed the surface of Mars in the 1970s. Pupils worked in the brand new Science labs and thoroughly enjoyed the practical experiments, looking like real scientists wearing safety goggles and white lab coats. In Chemistry, the pupils investigated the use of hydrogen. Balloons with hydrogen went off with a bang and they conducted an experiment to see if they could get that ‘squeaky pop’ to show that hydrogen was present. An explosive and memorable session!

rocket, culminating in the opportunity to fire their rockets using compressed air. The challenge focused on distance and direction travelled, while trying to hit an ‘alien’ target. Much fun was had on the Prep School fields, firing the rockets high into the sky! The exciting day finished with a fascinating talk by Professor Andrea Sella, a professor from University College London and frequent contributor to BBC Science documentaries and radio programmes. The children were enthralled by his batch of amazing dry ice (and a large slice of a delicious space themed cake!). My thanks go to Cheltenham Festivals for giving us the opportunity to host this special day, designed to promote Science and Design Technology to young and enthusiastic learners across Cheltenham. The pupils had an amazing day.

Lower School In Year 4 Enrichment sessions we have been working on precision and accuracy as well as expressing our own creative flair, through a variety of Design & Technology projects. We have designed animals and landscapes using shells, and also created ornamental trees by twisting copper wire to create branches and buds, and painted the buds using nail varnish.

Upper School Year 8 Latin Scholars have been studying Sparta and Ancient Egypt, focussing on Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, and Hieroglyphics. The boys and girls presented their work on Sparta to an audience and even offered to their guests Spartan-like food (beans, nuts and olives: designed to encourage strong and healthy bodies). The presenters informed their audience about the gruesome and hard lifestyle of the average Spartan, which was largely military based: children were sent away aged seven to learn how to fight and steal! Alongside learning some basic Hieroglyphics and Greek, the Scholars have enjoyed the freedom to discover a little more about different ancient cultures.

Girls' and Boys' Sports With much of the county under water, and The Prep's pitches looking decidedly damp, many of this week's sports fixtures at The Prep were cancelled. Thanks to the College Grounds team who sent us this picture of two ducks enjoying the unseasonable weather!

On Thursday 9 June, a selection of children from Years 3 to 6 entered the Olympic Torch Invitational Athletics Event, hosted by St Edward's School. Six schools were involved and the afternoon consisted of track events for long and short distances. Throughout the afternoon, there were some amazing performances from our young athletes and, as the points were tallied, we were always close to the top. In the end, Cheltenham Prep finished in third place, 2 points behind second place and not many more behind first. This was an excellent achievement! However, an equally positive achievement, was the effort, support, determination and fantastic team spirit shown by the whole team. It was a great event to be part of and the team should be very proud of their achievements.
