Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents This week culminates in a whole College Open Morning and The Prep is looking forward to making a full contribution. Although Year 8 will shoulder the main responsibility of guiding our visitors around the Prep School, all children are on show. This is not some call to arms as I already have absolute confidence in every member of the community. Instead I just need to emphasise the value to all children as they experience ‘presenting’, possibly for the first time. Recently I was part of a panel making a judgement on behalf of the whole College. Undoubtedly those who made the pitch were experts in their field, but who got ‘the nod’? The team who could best communicate their vision and the quality of their offer. As our children move through The Prep and then on to the senior school of their choice, the development of these soft skills continues alongside the academic curriculum. Learning to present, compete, win, lose, fail, communicate and be resilient, whether as an individual or as part of a team are crucial qualities, many of which can be developed in co-curricular activity and during events such as Open Morning.

Excuse me if I have missed you in the past few days as I have not been at my post in the morning to welcome you in. On Monday and Tuesday I attended a Heads’ conference, on Wednesday an early morning business meeting and, annoyingly, a touch of ‘man flu’ has laid me a little low towards the end of the week. I do enjoy seeing you arrive and whenever possible will be outside to greet you as you arrive. Jon Whybrow

Smoothie Delight!

What a turn out we had in The Prep school for the Smoothie competition: there were over 200 entries to taste! It took a while for Gill Pearson, MD from Smootheelicious, and Mike Rooke, Executive Head Chef at Cheltenham College, to taste each one and try to deliberate the best flavour, consistency, colour and combinations for each section of the school. After narrowing it down to 2 from each year group, Gill and Mike agreed on a winner in each section. The four lucky winners, who will be invited to the Smootheelicious HQ to recreate their drink, will be announced in Assembly on Monday.

Pupils Prepare for Prestigous Partnership with World Renowned Symphony Orchestra Next week, pupils at The Prep will be treated to a unqiue performance by members of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, ahead of a day of workshops with the music pupils from across both The Prep and Senior School. The performance will kick off the partnership which Cheltenham College and Cheltenham Prep are forming with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO). They are one of the very best professional orchestras in the world, known for being ground breaking in many areas (with personnel and repertoire, etc). For example, Sir Simon Rattle, one of the most famous orchestral conductors in the world, first rose to prominence with the CBSO, having been appointed when he was just 25 years old. The new conductor of the CBSO orchestra, appointed in 2016, is both female and just 30 years old: Lithuanian born former director of the Landestheater opera company in Prep for The Week Issue Number 1838 30 September 2016

Salzburg and winner of the Nestlé Conducting Competition in 2012, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The CBSO's partnership with us will involve close collaboration between the organisations moving forward, and will prove to be a very fruitful musical venture for College. Back in the summer term, a group of Year 8 music scholars attended a lunchtime concert by the brass section of the CBSO at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham. Their first visit to The Prep next week will see a String Quartet coming to perform to, and work with, a variety of pupils from across the entire school. Beginning with a performance to The Prep School in their Assembly, the CBSO members will deliver workshops with our Year 1 Kingfishers children, who all learn class violin as part of their music curriculum, followed by training with some of our chamber groups (the String Quintet and String Trio), a masterclass with some of the Upper School string

players from The Prep, and finally, working with College pupils during their orchestral sectional rehearsal at the end of the day. We hope to invite different musicians (Wind, Brass, Percussion, as well as Strings) from the CBSO to come and work with and inspire our pupils here across Prep and College, throughout the year. This partnership will offer the best of both worlds: all pupils will experience world-class music making (whether they learn an instrument or not), and the pupils that do learn an instrument will have the chance to study with world-class musicians, both individually and in small groups. This is a fabulous opportunity for the pupils across College and, coupled with the new Steinway School Status at College happening this term, provides a real focus on music and the musical provision available at Cheltenham College. 4

Kingfishers Reception children were very pleased to welcome Ernie the newest member of the class this week. As part of their topic work they are talking about bones. Thank you to Peter and Emmiline CyphusHocken for letting Ernie join us.

Year 2 have been learning all about the four countries that form the UK and their capital cities, which lead on to activities influenced by the children. They looked through each country and knew many facts that make them unique, such as Sean Degnan’s fact -The Full English Breakfast! The children also looked at famous landmarks and noticed that each city has a castle. From this, Year 2 studied castles and the features found on a castle, especially the murder hole. The children created some amazing castles using Lego, making sure that they were a solid structure and could defend the enemy. Of course, there cannot be a castle without a dragon! This enthralled Charles McKee, who was a fountain of knowledge. There were fantastic mixed media dragons created, some friendly, some not so friendly. It has been great fun!

PLEASE NOTE Don't forget our reading and handwriting workshop next Tuesday 4th at 16:00 in the Library! "As we welcome in the Autumn, please may I remind parents that their children should have a coat, wellies and a puddle suit with them in school every day. The coat is obtained from Schoolblazer and the puddle suit is available from the uniform shop." - Mrs Buttress Prep for The Week Issue Number 1838 30 September 2016

Lower School

It is hard to believe we have only been back 4 weeks and crammed so much learning, enjoyment and fun into that time. Everyone has settled into their daily and weekly routines and there is an active buzz around the building. Already we have Year 3s earning certificates for their Times Tables Challenge and taking pride in knowing their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Year 4 have been creating

some amazing poetry: great examples of Haiku and poems based on Spike Milligan’s Ning, Nang, Nong. It is with great pleasure that we hear children using the knowledge and ideas acquired in one curricular area, such as the Anglo-Saxons, being used in other lessons, like creative writing. Many are continuing investigations and finding out for themselves after the initial lesson has been completed, from researching more about the weather, listening to weather reports to reading the thermometers placed around Lower School to understand more about micro-climates.

Fridays start with our weekly ‘Wake and Shake’. With the weather being so clement we have been able to hold these outside and the children have loved being in the fresh air and getting energised for the start of the day. It has provided a perfect opportunity for Lower School to get to know our Year 8 peer mentors who have enjoyed the chance to lead part of the session. As we head towards half term, I know that everyone will be rising to the challenges set by their teachers and will be doing so with a determined attitude to keep trying to reach their goals.

This week, with a view to sprucing up the Upper School notice boards, pupils were let loose with the school camera for the day. The brief was to capture as many moments as they could, which summed up a typical day’s work and play at The Prep. They also came up with some captions to describe life in Upper School, for example:

Upper School

"My tutor is always there to help." "It’s good having the older boys and girls to look up to." Please do call by Upper School to see the rest of the display!

The Cottage and Reception Storyteller Club had a real treat this week when two Year 8 girls joined them in the Library, to read a wonderful story about Friends! Mrs Carson, the Librarian, said "It was really special to see the youngest and oldest children in the school getting together and sharing stories."

It’s festival season! The Year 6 and 8 casts taking part in this year's Shakespeare Schools Festival both enjoyed interactive Drama workshops at Tewkesbury Roses Theatre, this week. The professional directors took each cast on a journey of discovery where they furthered their presentation and performance techniques, and had the chance to study the specific characters and themes within their plays. Both casts participated with other schools in the area which offered very different dynamics: Year 6, presenting Hamlet worked with Secondary pupils from Winchcombe School whereas Year 8, performing The Taming of the Shrew, were joined by pupils from Alderman Knight School in Tewkesbury. In both cases, the results were energetic, engaging and profitable and the workshop has paved the way for our joint production at The Roses Theatre on November 8, after Half Term. Watch out for more information about when tickets go on sale, and how you can purchase them.

Brave Year 3 pupils drew a small crowd in the Library this week as they took on Year 7 pupils at a game of chess. The Year 7 players emerged victorious, but it was great to see the younger pupils taking the challenge and putting up a very strong fight! The chess boards are always out at break and lunch times for any keen chess players who would like to challenge a friend or classmate!

Girls' Sports

Team of the Week: U9B This was our first match with a goalkeeper and what a triumph! We played a match consisting of 3 lots of 10 minutes. With one goalkeeper and twelve other girls we were able to play 6 girls in the field for the first session, a different 6 for the second session and then we rotated and mixed the girls up for the final play. This enabled the girls to get some great match play and try a couple of positions. The teams showed great improvements putting into practice the positioning and spacing they have been practising during training. The girls looked strong and maintained focus throughout the match really thinking about their play. We are beginning to use a greater width of the pitch and a more effective use of possession so that we dribble and pass when it is appropriate. Our goalkeeper played extremely well and had to save a number of goals but we always looked the stronger team and capitalised on our shots to score a total of 6 goals over the three sessions. A thoroughly pleasing performance, the girls were all enjoying their hockey and demonstrated a real hunger to do well.

Team of the Week: U10B v St Edwards Organisation and teamwork were the foundations for success for the U10B Rugby squad on a glorious autumn afternoon. Meeting our boys were the teams from St Edward's and Richard Pate. Cheltenham played St Edward's first in what turned out to be a fast-paced and even game. St Edward's had several quick and agile players who caused our defence a few problems; nonetheless our strong rucking and quick counter-attacking play meant that at half-time the score was 3-2 to Cheltenham. As the second half progressed St Edward's tired a little and the Cheltenham boys stretched their lead with 3 more well-taken tries. Try as they might, St Edward's just couldn't get the ball over the line enough despite several nice attacking phases, and the score ended 6-3 to Cheltenham – though it was a closer game than the scoreline suggested and both teams deserve credit for the way they played. The second game against a spirited and determined Richard Pate side ended 6-1. Key to Cheltenham's success in this game was the effective implementation of work carried out on the training ground, which was great to see. The boys were strong in the tackle and disciplined at set plays, and Richard Pate had little response to Cheltenham's quick and accurate passing. Despite Cheltenham extending their lead, the Richard Pate boys never gave up and their persistence was rewarded with a late try at the very end of the game. A very successful afternoon – not only in terms of results but the boys are really starting to use what they have learnt on the training ground, and gel as a team. This bodes well for the rest of the season – keep it up! On Wednesday afternoon, the Gloucester Rugby Defence Coach, Jonny Bell, kindly spent time with the U13A, U13B, U12A and U12B boys to work on developing their understanding of the defence system and explore the importance of unity. Hopefully the session will lead to some clean sheets against Beaudesert next week.
