Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents It is rare that I begin the school week by taking items of clothing off in Assembly! However, that is what I decided to do (be assured it was only a t-shirt which I was wearing over my shirt and tie!) and I must admit, it was carthartic. Having been incensed by the news emanating from the track of Hurricane Matthew, which compared death and destruction in Haiti to the inconvenience of not being able to access Starbucks in Florida, I thought that we should do something constructive and immediate. Hence my appeal for clothes for Haiti. On Monday 17 October at Assembly, I hope that as many children as possible will hand over an item of clothing. These donations will then be shipped to those poor children in Haiti. I am pleased that we are not going on Half Term today, instead working for one more week before allowing the children a well earned break. By doing this we ensure that the first half of term is longer than the second and more challenges can be overcome before the long, dark nights set in. Without doubt the seasons play a part in the rhythm of the school year and to make the most of daylight before the clocks go back makes most sense. Although I will speak more about half term next week, any planning that goes on must

ensure a balance between work and play; batteries must be recharged! Be aware that the House Art Competition will be introduced to the children at Assembly on Monday and hanging some activities and visits on this theme will offer opportunities for gainful, yet relaxing employment over the two week period, even for those staring down the barrel of mock examinations. We continue to work hard with you as the Saturday operation beds in. In order to help us to help you, if you are delayed at pick up on Saturday, please let us know so that we can take appropriate steps to keep your child safe and secure. Jon Whybrow

Headmaster's Commendations Morgan Dawson, Tobias Evans, Oscar Lait, Ted McQuitty and Theo Archer for being good ambassadors for the school Monty Wayman and Ed Critchley for being responsible, thoughtful and caring buddies since the start of term Well done to all of Year 6, who completed their distance badge tests in swimming on Monday. The children really impressed all the staff, who would like to award six commendations for excellence to the following children, who all managed to swim more than 90 lengths in an hour - an outstanding achievement! Jude Richardson (122 lengths), Autumn Conner (120), Teddy Bennett (94), Charlie Whitney (92), Evie Poulain (90) and Thomas Martin-Harrington (90). The staff would like to award six further commendations for effort to children who displayed incredible determination and perseverance, and all achieved significant personal bests: Poppy Watkins, Vasco Palmer, Jay Wheatley, Sydney Fairs, Martha Llewellen Palmer and Liza Karagulakova. Cheltenham Literature Festival e festival Every Year group visitied th k they've had! this week, and what a wee

Poetry Workshop with wordsmith, Rachel Rooney On the first Friday of the Cheltenham Literature Festival, seven lucky Year 4 pupils were invited to join poet, Rachel Rooney for a workshop on writing poetry. She shared some of her poems and then the pupils had to turn their eyes into ‘mystical eyes’ that could see special things. The pupils wrote and performed so well that she then personally invited them to attend her talk to lots of other schools. Some of the pupils were lucky enough to be on stage and performed as a goldfish and a set of books in her poem about her goldfish, Flug. The group worked really hard and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with a famous poet.

career ended as a teenager when he became addicted to Frazzles and no longer had an athletic figure. Instead he became a writer and filled our bookshelves with hilarious stories. When talking about Superhero Street, Phil needed a volunteer to dress up. Our very own Jack Evans bravely climbed onto the stage and put on a penguin towel, a furry hat and some swimming goggles. The transformation was complete: Jack the Superhero!

Pamela Buchart and her Vampire Rats On the same day Year 4 were fortunate enough to be able to see Pamela Buchart at the Literature Festival. She was full of energy and truly inspired the pupils to pick up a book (not necessarily one of hers) and read. She has written several stories set in schools, such as My Headteacher is a Vampire Rat. She entertained the audience with story ideas and topics for creating ideas, including using crisps to find characters!

Writing is Playtime - Phil Earle On Monday, Year 3 went to the Literature Festival to listen to Phil Earle, the author of Demolition Dad and Superhero Street. Phil explained how writing stories is like an extended playtime: you can go anywhere, be anyone and do anything in your imagination! Fortunately for us, Phil’s football Prep for The Week Issue Number 1840 14 October 2016

The Brilliant Bard, with Fiona Ross Fiona Ross ran a fantastic Shakespeare Workshop for Year 6, full of passion and ardour and lots of Midsummer Night's Dreams. Really wonderful!

Epic travels inspired Abi Elphinstone's villains Year 5 were completely inspired by Abi Elphinstone at the Festival! They consumed her words about travel and making stories from what you see around you and rushed back to Forest School, the Lake and the playground to draw inspiration for their maps and stories! A really inspiring talk and visit! Thanks Abi!

The Brilliant Bard, with Fiona Ross Peter Worley made philosophers of Year 6 in his session all about unpicking stories.

At the workshop afterwards, by Felix Warr 5S "We were here to see Abi Elphinstone speak to us about what makes a good villain in your book. Then we had to make up our own villain and we all had great ideas! We had to write about his or her personality and superpowers. Afterwards, we wrote a small description of the villain, with lots of detail. Some of us got a sticker to put in the books we had. Mr Ledlie got some books signed by Abi Elphinstone, that was great."

n with children's Year 1 enjoyed a jolly sessio talented illustrator, author, Philip Ardagh, and It was a leafy Elissa Elwick, on Monday. ren loved! Perhaps the adventure, which the child very own character, best bit was creating our drawn by clever Elissa. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1840 14 October 2016

News from Kingfishers Nursery The children in the Nursery love having the 'big' girls and boys coming to spend time with them, and enjoyed a visit from these lovely Upper School pupils. Our recent focus on healthy eating meant the children could make their own fruit kebabs - tasty! Bring a parent to Forest School on Saturday also saw a lot of industrious activity, with parents being taught the Forest School rules by the children, before heading off to explore and have fun. Of course, autumn cannot pass us by without the traditional conker hunt! Great also for our focus on 'Senses', discussing and learning new ways to describe objects such as 'spiky', 'prickly', 'rough', 'smooth'.

Kingfishers Dear Kingfishers I am delighted to announce that Mrs Trimmer is expecting a baby and will be leaving at the end of the Autumn Term. Mrs Tanya Kelway, who has previously worked at The Prep will be taking over the class, working closely with Miss Griffiths, for the remaining 2 terms of the academic year. Mrs Kelway has been teaching for 7 years in the independent sector and her specialisms include Music, Drama and English. She previously held the post of Year 1 teacher in Kingfishers and is delighted to be returning to us in January. We look forward to seeing her at the end of the Autumn Term as she visits us for some ‘getting to know you’ visits with the children. From Mrs Buttress The Reception children were delighted to welcome a dentist into the classroom this week. Dr Hammersley showed the children a selection of snacks and they discussed which would make their teeth happy or sad. They also looked at the best way to brush their teeth and enjoyed practising on the mouth puppet.

Bakery Club The Bakery Club members have been very busy this term. So far we have made chocolate muffins, chocolate chip cookies, shortbread and cheese scones – with some really delicious results! The pupils now realise the importance of measuring out the ingredients carefully, so that the recipe turns out as expected. They have also learnt how to separate the yolk from the white of an egg and how to do the ‘rubbing in method’, for the scones in particular. It is a fast paced club with lots to be done in the short time available but the pupils are all rising to the challenge and are working as a team. They are also getting good at tidying up afterwards. We would like to say a big thank you to the Catering team who help behind the scenes to make this a very successful club. Happy Baking!

Cheltenham Prep School Invitational Tournament Our U9 and U10 invitational tournaments are now in their 3rd year. This year we had 24 teams battling it out for the trophies. It was a busy and action packed day with every team playing a minimum of 5 hockey matches, all of which were played in good spirits but at the same time competitive and very closely contested. Our Cheltenham teams did themselves proud with some excellent performances and results, but unfortunately both teams narrowly missed out on progression to the semifinals finishing 3rd in their groups – U9 missed out by 2 points and U10 only 1 point. A great day of hockey! Prep for The Week Issue Number 1840 14 October 2016

Boys' Sports

Clifton College and Cheltenham have a tremendous history of competition on the sports fields and this is celebrated every year by the fiercely contested “Colleges Cup”. Our boys have had a strong start to the season, racking up a lot of points, but we knew this would be a real test against a powerful and motivated Clifton side. Right from the first whistle, the Clifton boys threw themselves into the Cheltenham defence, carrying hard and putting big numbers into each ruck. They were coming off the back of good wins over Dean Close and King’s Taunton and did not want to have to hand over the Cup on their home ground. What they met, however, was one of the most punishing defensive displays I have seen in 15 years of Prep School rugby. A combination of technique, power and utter determination knocked the Clifton runners back, time after time. This punishing defence was then contrasted by our outstanding clinical execution with the ball in hand. We had 12 opportunities to score in the game and converted 10 of them – a simply staggering conversion rate from a very talented side. Credit must go to Clifton who never backed down, battled to the final whistle and applauded our team when we collected the trophy – a real credit to their school. Final word, however, must go to our boys. We have now played and won 6 of 6 matches, scoring over 235 points in the process. As you can see from the photo the boys are not small and we are more than capable of bullying our way to a win, but this is not how the boys play the game. Most of our tries have been scored through wonderful handling and decision making: we are passing our way around teams and it has been a real joy to watch. On to Bromsgrove on Saturday!
