Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents I am writing this as I travel to London on the train, joining those who commute to ‘the Smoke’. My reason for joining their ranks for the day is twofold; to attend training in brand promotion (yes, educationalists can think outside the box!) and to entertain for lunch some London prep school heads. Many of them are having to advise more and more of their parents, who have made the decision to relocate away from the overheating independent school market in the South East. And can you blame them? At the Independent Schools Show in Battersea, at which the College and Prep had a very well attended stand, an experienced preparatory school head, as reported in The Times, bemoaned the intense struggle that faces parents as they seek to move from prep school to senior school. He cited the challenges presented to these 11 and 13 year old children as they battle through a myriad of tests, hedging their bets as to which senior school they will get into. With the ratio of prep schools to senior schools sitting at about 2:1, you can imagine the fine margins and vagaries of the entrance procedure, something over which only the senior schools and the most influential prep schools have control. It was slightly ironic though, that the same head was reported as ‘reassuring’ parents that entry to his school at four was only after 'informal assessment in small groups at the age of three’. Well, that should take the pressure off then! Without wishing to appear ingratiating, the majority of my audience who read this blog are much more savvy than those who present toddlers for group discussion (“Come on darling, I’ve told you once before that it was Donald and not Hilary who won!”) at London prep schools. That is because they have chosen to live in or near Cheltenham. Let us consider the educational opportunities on offer. There are four significant senior independent schools; Cheltenham College, the Ladies College, Dean Close and St. Edward’s. Two of these have traditional prep schools in that they begin with a pre-prep and finish at 13, these being ourselves and Dean Close. There are four prep schools which serve the ages of 3-11; The Richard Pate School, Berkhampstead, Airthrie and St Edward’s. There is also a range of independent nurseries. The State system boasts outstanding primary schools in Naunton Park and Leckhampton to mention only two and, of course, there is the nationally renowned Pate’s Grammar which is backed up by a raft of other grammar schools nearby. Balcarras and Bournside complete the enviable range Prep for The Week Issue Number 1843 18 November 2016

of choices for those parents wise enough to live in a town which takes education so seriously. These establishments are wrapped in an aura of intellectual curiosity promoted by the range of festivals on offer. The town’s support of its theatres, galleries and museums, along with the presence of a Member of Parliament who promotes great education for all, completes this enviable package. It is possible that I could be accused of rank hypocrisy because this week saw the beginning of our pre-tests in Year 6, which judge whether a move through to College is in the best interest of the child. The great difference between this common type of procedure and what is happening in London is that decisions are based on what we consider is right for the child and are not swayed by numbers, league tables, the future strength of College co-curricular prowess or any other external pressure. Passing the pre-test means that we believe a child is ready for Years 7 and 8, when they will follow the Common Entrance syllabus. Whilst retaining the broad curriculum which includes Art, Music, Computing, Design Technology and PE/Games, children are prepared for final examinations in Year 8 (sat in June of their final year in The Prep) in English, Maths, a Modern Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Latin, History, Geography and Religious Studies. The ability to thrive on this challenge, whilst enjoying full participation in cocurricular activities and having the time to re-charge batteries, is an excellent indicator as to whether a school, like College, where all pupils sit 10 GCSEs, is appropriate. This is the reason for the pre-test in Year 6. Those parents of younger children, especially those in Kingfishers, should be reassured that the vast majority pass through to College without any fuss. The recent, outstanding performance by the College at GCSE has not been fuelled by a raising of the academic bar at entrance. Instead there have been huge strides in the quality of teaching at both schools. 2

Underpinning the entrance procedure in any school is the monitoring of a child’s progress. This diagnostic tool helps teachers to focus on specific areas when necessary and informs me and Mrs Jenkins (Deputy Head, Academic) on progress towards the senior school of choice. At this point, let me remind parents that it is The Prep’s job to prepare children for a range of independent schools and not just for Cheltenham College. So if the article in The Times, or the awareness of this week’s examinations, or a desire to plan ahead or just curiosity prompts you to discuss your child’s future, whatever age he or she is, please do not hesitate to come and see me or Mrs Jenkins at a mutually convenient time. Personal Achievements Amelia's Epic Climb! During Half Term, as part of her 10th Birthday present, Amelia Hounam-Brooker had a day scaling the steep 50m roof of London’s O2 Arena! On arrival, she first watched a safety film and was shown how to put on the one-piece suit and heavy safety harness, before joining a climbing party of 16. She was shown how to ‘clip on’ to the safety wire that goes right over the roof, then set off on her climb: the path over the roof is surprisinly springy, a bit like walking on a trampoline but at a steep angle. The hardest part was sliding her harness buckle through connectors on the safety wire every 3 metres, but Amelia became quite adept at this and consequently was always right up behind the person in front. At the summit, you pause to spend time on a viewing platform, take photographs, have a rest and look at the view. You do seem quite close to aircraft above, departing from London City airport. On the platform, the guide, Alex, came to Amelia to ask her age and pay her some compliments, before asking if she would like to lead the group down the other side to the ground. Of course, she jumped at the chance and followed his instructions exactly. At the bottom, everyone had a great feeling of satisfaction and Amelia enjoyed the high fives from other climbers. Well done Amelia!

Jamie Leads Remembrance Well done to Jamie Reid who, after performing in the band at Friday's Act of Remembrance, undertook an excellent solo performance of The Last Post and Reveille at Sevenhampton Church for The Royal British Legion service on Sunday.

What to do when it all gets too much Tuesday 29 November at 17.00-17.45 Prep Assembly Hall All parents are warmly invited to attend the first of a series of presentations in which we will be looking at different aspects of child development and the ways in which you can help your children to achieve their “personal bests”.

Belinda and Rachel will be presenting ideas on: • keeping calm when things get stressful • understanding difficult behaviour • improving peace between siblings

This is a parenting seminar to help with the ups and downs of family life, offered by Rachel Melville-Thomas and Belinda West, of our Prep School Pupil Support service. Rachel and Belinda are vastly experienced practitioners in their field and work with many of our pupils individually. They also have recently spent time with all pupils in Years 7 and 8, introducing them to some of the key ways in which they can try to manage themselves when they feel under pressure.

This could be especially helpful around exam time and approaching a busy holiday season but will provide invaluable support and practical advice for all parents. There will of course be the opportunity to ask questions.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1843 18 November 2016

We very much hope that you will be able to join us. The session will run during activity / catch up time and, therefore we would prefer for children not to attend with you.

Kingfishers Beep Beep! Day Next week is Road Safety Week and the Kingfishers will be taking part in activities about this important issue during their Beep beep! Day on Friday.

The main aim of Beep Beep! Days are to help children to start learning the road safety basics through fun activities, and to raise awareness about protecting children on roads. To find out more about the road safety charity Brake, please visit www.brake.org.uk.

We love Kookaburra Club! In the first half of term the children made the most of the light and the good weather and loved playing on the patio with their friends after school. Now the evenings are drawing in, the boys and girls will be found in the Kookaburra Room doing all sorts of things that perhaps they might be doing at home: playing trains, doing puzzles, listening to stories and having fun together. Enjoy their artwork – it’s on display when you come to pick up at 5 o’clock. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1843 18 November 2016

Wellie Weather! Please can we ask all Kingfishers parents to ensure that your child is equipped with their puddle suit, wellington boots and waterproofs. Named gloves and hats should also be worn as the weather gets chillier! Thank you. 6

Lower School Science Day Fire, fizz and bubbles!

shoot so far into the sky.

On Wednesday, Lower School enjoyed a fabulous day of science investigations. Everyone had the chance to take on the role of scientist and were encouraged to ask questions, make predictions and carry out different experiments.

Year 4 were very lucky to be invited to the Science Department and watched in wonder as their teachers allowed them to set fire to their hands! Luminous liquid was also created by mixing two liquids together.

Most of the activities involved chemical reactions of one sort or another: the children were particularly amazed by what happened when Mentos mints were added to a bottle of Coca Cola. It was a case of stand well back! No one expected the Coca Cola to

In the afternoon, Year 3 made their own lemonade and discovered how to create carbon dioxide by mixing sodium bicarbonate, lemon juice and water. This is what makes the fizz in fizzy drinks. Some children loved the taste of it, others were not so keen!

All in all, it was a busy, exciting day, full of new discoveries and surprises. What was most interesting was just how many chemicals there are in our kitchen cupboards. Making potions using these created many reactions and lots of gas!

Year 4 Maths Challenge! Last Friday over 100 pupils from 25 primary and prep schools from all over Cheltenham and the Cotswolds took part in a Year 4 Maths Challenge, hosted at St Edward’s School. Four of our Year 4 pupils, teamed in pairs, pitted their wits against each other in a series of challenges which saw them testing their mathematical skills, including mental arithmetic. A vast variety of puzzles were set, including code breaking, tangrams, mystery numbers and logic puzzles. Thank you to Mrs Coley for accompanying the pupils to this fantastic maths event. Holland Hockey Tour Before the birds were even thinking about stirring from their cosy nests on the morning of 21 October, 29 bleary-eyed Upper School girls and 3 staff boarded the bus for their long anticipated hockey tour to Rotterdam, Holland. Spirits were not dampened by the long journey and excited conversation (and questionable singing!) kept everyone going to Dover, on the ferry and through parts of France and Belgium before we alighted at our lovely, welcoming hotel. Not a moment was to be wasted and, after settling into our rooms, our tour representative, Evelyn, whisked us off to the first training session at Rotterdam Hockey Club. Founded in 1925 the club is the

largest in Holland with over 2000 members, including a number of international athletes who play for the men’s side. The club was met with gasps from our girls who were impressed with the number of floodlit pitches on offer, the size of the clubhouse and the vast array of bicycles parked outside! We were also surprised to learn that Dutch children don’t often learn to play hockey at school; the majority play club hockey after school. Sure enough, over the coming days we often saw tens of boys and girls arriving on their bikes after school, one hand on the handlebars, the other clutching their hockey sticks, cycling eagerly to the club for another training session!

focus: sheer fun and indulgence! Efteling Theme park provided everything the girls could want in terms of adrenalin and excitement. Wearing their orange hoodies and fuelled by sugary treats, the girls raced off to various rides in small groups, trying everything from the gentler pirate ship to the hideous thrill of the newest ride which Our session was run by two of suspends you for an agonising the club’s youth side and the girls relished this opportunity to stretch three seconds before plunging you into a seemingly bottomless both their legs and their skills – hole at 90 km per hour! Rotterdam with a quick trip to the gift shop, a boat trip on The sun shone on Sunday for an the Rhine-Maas Delta and the action-packed day of fixtures opportunity to learn about the against the local Dutch club teams. After initial nerves, both teams played with skill and confidence and emerged victorious, Team A with a 5-0 win and Team B with an impressive 11-1 result. The afternoon’s action was probably the highlight for many of the girls: watching Rotterdam HC’s Men’s 1st XI play a match against a local side. The stands were absolutely packed with friends, families and supporters and the DJ really got the crowd going with songs and shout-outs, including one to the Cheltenham Prep girls! The speed of the men’s hockey was unbelievable and their level of skill, ball control and teamwork was out of this world. Rotterdam HC won their match and even signed autographs for our girls afterwards. Much to our delight, two of the team (Simon Egerton and Blair Tarrant) led our training session the following day.

largest port in Europe. The last matches of the tour were played that evening under floodlights, a new experience for us all! It was fantastic to see so many of the girls putting into practice what they had been learning in training sessions and mimicking the skills and team work they had seen in the men’s hockey match. Team B fought valiantly against a tough opposition and sustained a 2-0 loss while Team A continued their winning streak, coming away with a 4-0 victory. The next day, after one final, excellent coaching session from two of the senior men’s team players, we reluctantly boarded the coach for a weary but happy day of travelling back to the UK. The Cheltenham Prep girls excelled themselves on the tour; they proved themselves to be hugely caring and supportive of each other both on and off the pitch, and were fantastic ambassadors for the school. The amount they learned in terms of hockey is still evident on the pitches back home – come and see for yourselves!

Girls' Sports Team of the Week – U8B The U8B team played a very good match against Dean close, winning by 8 goals to 0. The girls worked hard as a team, especially in attack, where it was wonderful to see them passing the ball into the attacking D and moving forwards together. All the passing practice is paying off! It was also impressive that the girls were concentrating hard on looking up to make the right pass. The defence was fairly untroubled but when required, defenders were able to come forward and tackle any potential threats. The rolling substitutions worked well, providing the team with more energy and pace when it was required. A very convincing performance.

In the last 2 weeks, The Prep's girls have demonstrated outstanding resilience and sportsmanship. Our return from half term saw a tough block of fixtures, but even in defeat the enthusiasm, commitment and determination never wavered. Particularly in Upper School, there has been an injury and illness epidemic and a number of girls have been forced to miss matches. The remaining girls have taken all of the last minute changes in their stride and really pulled together. A particular highlight was a Year 6 girl stepping up to make her 1st VII debut and scoring a hat-trick. Wednesday brought a much improved set of performances and results – the staff are immensely proud and the girls should be too. Well done! 11

Team of the Week: U11Bs v Dean Close – Won 30-20 and v Abberley Hall – Won 30-10 The U11Bs' two recent victories are a result of this terms hard work and reflective match play. The boys are now taking responsibility for their actions on the pitch, eager to improve their decision making, which will result in ground gained, maintained possession of the ball and tries scored. At the heart of their success has been a team mentality, encouraging one another and not blaming individuals. They now want to play to the best of their ability and, in doing so, they are building an all-important self-belief and inner confidence that is also being translated from the pitch, to the classroom. In this week's match against Dean Close, which they have never won before, they all put in tireless match winning performances, but we were 5 – 10 down at half time. However, once they had shored up our tackling, clearance from the try line and passing width, they put three quick tries past Dean Close, securing the match. Having spent all their energy, being a bit battered and bruised, they finished in unity and with pride that can only be earned through hard work. This has seen them also win convincingly against Abberley Hall on Wednesday. However, we are not resting on our laurels, but striving to reach the next level, as a team.
