Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents I must emphasise two important aspects of communication. Firstly, that if a parent wishes to bring an issue to the attention of the school, any delay inevitably impacts on the effectiveness of the response. In matters relating to disputes between children, it is right and proper that events are properly investigated and that no one jumps to unjust conclusions. Any delay in commencing investigations will result in hazy memories and dissembling and a less than satisfactory resolution. And secondly, and vital to the continued progress of any school, those children who witness umpleasantness between others are morally obliged to step forward and take responsibility, especially if they are in the Upper School. To stand by and witness another child’s upset, without either attempting to stop the source of the upset or inform a member of staff is to condone the actions of the perpetrator. On the whole The Prep is strong in these respects. If it wasn’t, then my staff and I would be dealing with greater numbers of unhappy children. However, there will be no resting on laurels in any aspect of the school’s performance and customer service and the happiness and safety of the children must be at the forefront. Jon Whybrow
Headmaster's Commendations Charles Mills for an outstanding piece of woodworking in DT Enthusiasts Honor Hardie Organisation and consistent hard work in Maths Leah Richardson Consistent hard work and determination to succeed in Maths
Informal Concert Well done to all the pupils who took part in this week's Informal Concert in Lake House, which saw pupils of all ages showing off what they have been learning! It was a great show - thanks to all who took part, as well as those in the audience.

World Book Day Is it really a whole year since our last World Book Day celebrations?! For those of you who have had their costumes planned for months, fear not, it is nearly time for you to dress up again! On World Book Day (Thursday 2 March 2017) please come to school dressed up as a book character of your choice. You don’t need to spend a fortune on a costume, perhaps you could put your creative talents into practice and make something. Even a gesture towards a costume would be great, for example wearing a wig or carrying a prop. There will be a range of activities and competitions to enter on the day itself but there are two that you can start thinking about right now, just in time for Half Term!
Story Boxes Competition
Think inside the box rather than outside it this time and create a scene from a book of your choice inside a shoebox. Your shoebox can be any size and you can use any materials you like to create your scene. Bring your box to your form room on any day from now until Thursday 2 March; everyone who enters will receive a point for their House.
EXTREME Reading
This popular competition will run again this year. To compete for a prize, all you need to do is take a photograph of yourself reading in an extreme or unusual place and send it or give it to Mrs Carson in the Library (email p.carson@cheltenhamcollege. org). Take inspiration from the astronaut, Tim Peak, reading in the International Space Station!
Book Swap
If you wish to take part, bring a minimum of two books (in reasonable condition) into school and give them to Mrs Carson in the library between Monday 20 and Friday 24 February. These books will be collected and sorted appropriately. On Monday 27 February (Upper School) and Tuesday 28 February (Lower and Middle School) participating pupils will be able to select two books they wish to take home. Pupils may bring in more than two books but will still only be able to take two. Any remaining books will be sold on a bookstall at a later date to raise funds for the school charity. If you have any questions then please email: Miss Massey n.massey@cheltenhamcollege.org OR our Librarian, Mrs Carson p.carson@cheltenhamcollege.org Prep for The Week Issue Number 1850 3 February 2017

A view from: The Maths Department is the area and perimeter of our astro pitches and how much would it cost to replace the astro-turf on our pitches? What is the probability of Man United winning the Premiership? …. well zero you might argue!
Our world is maths! We use maths when we go shopping, plan a holiday, decide on a mortgage, decorate a room, order on Amazon... in fact we use maths in almost every part of our lives. At some point in their school lives, every pupil asks the question, “But why would we ever need to know this?” as they struggle through some seemingly random problem. The question is very easily answered in the Maths classroom. The fact that maths is so ubiquitous in our world, means it’s so relatable to everything we do, and it is simple to provide examples of where a particular concept can be used.
Cookery comes a close second to sport in terms of relating everyday life to maths. If we need 400g of flour for 8 cakes, how much do we need for 12? If my cake goes into the oven at 13:50 and takes 40 minutes to cook. When can I take it out the oven? If I have 0.5 litres of milk, is this enough if my recipe says that I need 400 ml? Figuring out problems in Baking, and say making smoothies, are activities in which our pupils almost forget that they are in the maths lesson as they are so much part of their lives. Our department is continually looking for ways to improve our pupils’ progress and a huge step forward for us has been running clinics several mornings per week for individuals or small groups of pupils who need some extra support on a particular topic. This has been possible mostly
due to Mrs Goodman, our Maths specialist LSW, who co-ordinates these sessions. This together with our House Maths competitions every Half Term, DCB Maths Challenges, and national events, ensures that our pupils have full immersion in our subject and can make as much progress possible. Without mathematics there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Dr Sandra Gilmour, Head of Maths
The links between Sport and Maths are endless. It is a connection that our pupils have a passion for and can engage with and more often than not, gets them out of the classroom, and still doing work! How much faster is the runner in Rome than Athens? What is the average speed for the cycle part of our Triathlon? What angle should the javelin be thrown? How much is spent on all the strawberries and cream sold at Wimbledon? What Prep for The Week Issue Number 1850 3 February 2017

Kingfishers This week, the children in Nursery celebrated Chinese New Year by learning a little about the customs involved, making chinese lanterns and listening to the story of the Chinese Zodiac Animals. The children in the photo were born in the year of the Dragon! The week ended with a great deal of excitement. The children came to school well prepared with backpacks, torches, maps, hats and binoculars in readiness for our bear hunt. They made their own marmalade sandwiches
during the morning before setting off on their adventure. The little bears from the Cottage had escaped and had to be tracked down! But don't worry - every last bear was found and escorted safely back to the Cottage. Tuesday 7 February at 15:45 Prep Library Join us for a talk by Belinda West from student support services: 'Tears, Tantrums & Triumphs: a parenting workshop on enjoying your under 7' Everyone is welcome to attend!
Lower School On Thursday, Year 3 were on Bath Road carrying out their field work for Geography. Armed with clip boards and maps, we worked our way from Kew Place up to the Norwood Roundabout. We found out everything we could about the land use on Bath Road. We had to be very observant and found that there was a huge variety of shops available. We were amazed to find that it was possible to buy almost anything on Bath Road, from bubble bath to bacon rolls and from pet food to Pokemon cards. Bakery Club The pupils at Bakery Club have been working very hard this term! So far we have made tasty pizza pin wheels, delicious chocolate slices and buttery iced orange biscuits with sprinkles. Lots of important skills are developed in the club – listening skills, sharing equipment, using scales correctly, measuring items, following a recipe as well as mixing and rolling techniques. Patience is also needed while we wait for the delicious food to cook! The group are also aware of the importance of teamwork, especially when tidying up. They are very good at helping each other.
WW2 Play in a Day
It was a huge privilege to watch Year 5 children perform a play about being an evacuee this week. After a few hours of exciting, fast-paced rehearsal, every pupil in Year 5 took on a role and led us through a dramatic recreation of evacuee experiences in WWII. Year 5 children were encouraged to use their own knowledge of WWII to enrich the performance. It was very rewarding to hear so many accurate WWII details retold with such confidence and in such an entertaining context. Pupils even used their improvisation skills to devise scenes that formed part of the play. It was fantastic to see everyone involved and I’m sure all learned a great deal from the whole day Many thanks to Mr Colin Smith who directed this wonderful extra-curricular History activity, as well as to Mrs Paterson and Mr Simpson for their hard work. Big congratulations go to the stars of the day, who were undoubtedly the Year 5 evacuees themselves, as they brought WWII to life for a day at The Prep.

Team of the Week – U8A The girls took part in their first netball match of the term against local rivals Dean Close. With a really promising start to their netball careers. The girls were enthusiastic and gave their all during the game. It was a very evenly matched contest and the girls showed great determination and worked well as a team to earn the win. We will work on our passing so that we can throw to hand and move the ball more swiftly into the spaces so that the game flows more. We will need to ensure we have safe pairs of hands to receive passes and retain possession so that we can move the ball into attack and score more goals next time. The races are run in teams of four as a relay - over a very muddy cross country course of about a mile. We did exceptionally well and our results were as follows: Year 4 girls came 1st Year 5 girls came 4th Year 6 girls came 2nd This meant that we came 3rd overall as a school from the twelve competing. Fantastic teamwork girls!
