Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents Through regular discussion with tutors and parents, and the Headmaster's Commendations system, I frequently observe pupils who have achieved particularly highly or are working exceptionally hard. Whilst these excellent achievements are to be celebrated, I have equal admiration for the many pupils who demonstrate great teamwork. This week’s House Netball and Football competitions allowed pupils a great chance to practise this quality - after all, simply turning up and remembering one’s House top is a contribution to the House effort. There was a wonderful atmosphere as all our boys and girls congratulated, commiserated, encouraged and cheered for their peers. Tomorrow’s House Swimming Gala will offer another opportunity for our boys and girls to be valued contributors to their Houses. As great champions for their teammates, I know that these pupils will be as successful in life as they are in school.

During the last year's ISI Inspection at The Prep, inspectors remarked positively on the excellent relationships between pupils and between staff and pupils, and it is a pleasure to see these relationships endure. With the Drama department preparing the final stages of their production, Bugsy Malone, it is obvious that collaboration between staff and pupils is at the very core of these excellent creative events. I hope you will attend one of next week’s performances, and see for yourself the fruits of their excellent communication, trust, confidence and teamwork. This positive relationship with staff is also evident in Year 8 this week, as individuals draw on the advice and guidance of their subject teachers to prepare revision timetables for the Easter holidays. As always, I cannot stress enough the importance of balancing work with play. Those who return to school in April both well rested and well prepared will be able to meet the challenges of the Summer Term with confidence and a positive outlook.

Year 2 have had a busy and exciting couple of weeks. Last week, they took part in a nail-biting hockey competition against Dean Close. Many goals were scored and everyone took part! We were very impressed with the children’s enthusiasm, ball skills and team work. This was Year 2’s first experience of an away match, and they were excellent opponents, shaking hands with the rivals at the end of each game, and enjoying a pastry and juice with them afterwards.
Kingfishers
This week, Year 2 had their first in-house swimming gala. The children were split into three teams: Whales, Sharks and Dolphins. Spirits remained high, and the children cheered their team mates on in each race. They showed excellent swimming technique, as they raced in all strokes. The Sharks scored the highest points, but everyone had a treat afterwards. Thank you to all parents who came to both events and supported the children!
Have you seen this gingerbread man? Boys and girls in Kingfishers are on the hunt for a gingerbread man who has run away. Where is he? Have you seen him? He has sent postcards from all of the places he has been: Lower School, the Nursery, the Dining Hall and Mr Whybrow's office. Reception class have made 'missing' posters in an attempt to find him. The hunt continues... Prep for The Week Issue Number 1855 17 March 2017

Geography and the Future
Personal Achievement
This week the Geography department welcomed two undergraduate students from the University of Gloucestershire to talk to the Year 8 Scholarship students about 'Geography and the Future', as part of the Royal Geographical Society's Ambassador Scheme. The students told us about why Geography is relevant in everyday life and what they were studying as part of their degrees, followed by a carousel of short Geography-related activities for our pupils to work their way through using a variety of resources.
Congratulations to Charles Mills for his achievements at the County Cup Hockey Tournament. Charles was part of an A team that won the County Cup last Sunday, which means they go through to the Regionals on Sunday 2 April. The boys were missing a key player but they worked incredibly well as a team and Charles scored a huge total of nine goals.
Topics that were discussed included jobs you can do with a Geography degree, Brexit, China's emergence as a global power, Cheltenham Race Week, NATO, flooding in Tewkesbury, global warming and Theresa May's background as a geographer... unsurprisingly the Scholars had plenty of questions for the Ambassadors at the end! The session was incredibly stimulating and informative, and we look forward to another visit from the Royal Geographical Society soon.
Year 8 Show and Tell As part of our regular 'Show and Tell' sessions, this week, Finlay Hurst brought in his prized football, signed by Cristiano Ronaldo and demonstrated some of his own skills. These short presentations are encouraging Year 8 to share their interests with their peers whilst building confidence speaking in front of people. Well done Finlay!

Staff v 1st VII Netball As has become a well-loved tradition over recent years, a pupil team takes on a staff team at the end of each term. On Wednesday evening, the 1st VII Netball team played against the girls’ games staff in a thrilling game of netball. The intensity was extremely high from the starting whistle and remained at that level for the full 40 minutes. It was end to end, with the scores tied at 11-11 after two quarters. More subs on the staff team proved beneficial as the game went on and everyone started to tire and eventually the staff crept in to the lead and finished the game 22 – 17 winners. There were some very impressive performances from both pupils and staff, and some very red and sweaty people by the end. Well done to all!

showed how strongly this group of boys have performed over the year. They have been pushed all the way by the U11B team who had a resounding… win over Prior Park Colts B team. The U11C team had a battling… draw against the Prior Park Colts C team and the U10C team beat their Colts D team 3-1. A superb set of results to round off the season. The Upper School were pitched into a House Hockey event that saw no quarter asked or given – some literally gave blood for their House! There were moments of superb play, but most interesting was the way that boys in supposed ‘lower teams’ were more than able to play with and against 1st VII players. It shows the depth of talent and work rate in these two year groups and was a joy to watch. Troy came away with the win, second Rome, third Athens, fourth Sparta, fifth Corinth and sixth Persia.
