Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents Life at school offers many challenges, not least those which involve establishing and maintaining friendships, overcoming academic difficulties and behaving appropriately. “Challenge is one of the six elements of our new rewards system which will be introduced in September and now is as good as any time to remind the children of what is required to finish the year off strongly. Year 8 are especially under the spotlight, not least on account of their forthcoming Common Entrance examinations and the fact that, slowly but surely, they are growing too big (literally and figuratively) for a prep school. Self-awareness, selfdiscipline and patience are the virtues on which they must call. All children will recognise the challenge of establishing and maintaining friendships, especially at this time of the academic year, when schools re-structure the class groupings. I would ask that all cast their minds back to this time last year when there were, inevitably, some worries and upsets when the new groupings were first published. And here we are, one year on from then, and it seems that everyone has survived the changes and probably made new friendships. Having watched two daughters go through this process on a regular basis, my advice is always to offer the support which leads to wider friendship groups as this is what will stand them in good stead in the future.

Year 8 Pupils' Chemistry Contest Success! This week, four Year 8 pupils represented The Prep at the Salters' Festival of Chemistry. Run in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry, and held at 41 Universities and Colleges across the UK and Ireland, this annual competition aims to test the Chemistry knowledge of pupils and inspire them, through engaging activities, to consider Chemistry as a subject to study and perhaps even a career. Rory, Thea, Molly and Finn in Year 8 all travelled to the University of Bath this week to take part in two hands-on practical chemistry challenges. They also watched some exciting chemistry demonstrations in Bath University's superb labs! After demonstrating a variety of great knowledge and skills, as well as the ability to think problems through in a clear manner, The Prep's team were declared winners! There was a total of 12 schools taking part and our pupils were commended not only for their excellent team work and scientific knowledge but also for their wonderful manners and great attitude all day. A huge well done to The Prep's team, they should be very proud of their achievements. The pupils were presented with some Molymod kits for the Science department to use. A View from the Music Department

It’s been another jam-packed year for the Music Department! Our goal is to make music as inclusive as possible, whilst still providing plenty of opportunities for the most able. This starts in the classroom, and our facilities in Lake House are constantly evolving and being upgraded. Our music technology room, complete with iMacs and keyboards are utilised for general class music in Years 5-8, alongside a multitude of percussion and other instruments. If the pupils enjoy class music, then my hope is that they might be enthused to take it up outside the classroom too. Class music remains one of my primary focuses here at Cheltenham Prep, and we cover topics as varied as Mozart and the Classical Period, Rap and Beat-Boxing, Tudor Music, Programme Music, Music composed for the story of Romeo & Juliet, Form and Structure and much, much more! Our ensembles have had as busy a year as ever, performing in our Christmas Concert (complete with tinsel on instruments and wearing Santa hats), the Summer Serenade and our end of year Summer Concert (combined with the House Singing Competition). We have held our usual round of Informal Pupils’ Concerts throughout each Half Term, and our choirs have provided music for each of our weekly Chapel services. Chamber Choir has led evensong at Gloucester Cathedral, and we have another music tour arranged for the

2017 Autumn Term – this time to Vienna. The Year 8 pupils will experience a variety of Arts during their post-CE programme, including working with two beat-boxers, two street dancers and a graffiti artist. They will also have a film music/sound effect workshop with one of our current parents, Mr Paul Thompson, who works professionally in this field. Other events throughout the year include Carol singing at The Suffolks, our community outreach programme (music scholars performing at local care homes and primary schools), Kingfishers and Lower School Christmas concerts, Nativities and Summer performances and the House Music competition in the Spring Term (involving around 150 pupils). The department also plays a large part in the annual production, this year working with the drama department to put on Bugsy Malone. This academic year has seen a new partnership formed with the CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra),which has involved a number of these world-class musicians coming in

to The Prep to perform to, and work with, our pupils. We have focused on string instruments this year, and will look to expand this into other instrument families as the partnership progresses. College became an all-Steinway school which meant that The Prep could upgrade its fleet of pianos (to all-Yamaha) and utilise the fantastic top of the range instruments at College for its Music Scholar recital in January. As usual, we have run termly ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) exams, and have achieved considerable success throughout the year. Our team of 16 visiting music staff continue to work hard with all of our pupils learning instruments, and the effects are clear from our exam results. My thanks go to all the staff in the department for the crucial help

and support they provide to our pupils of all ages learning music. In particular, I would like to express my enourmous gratitude to Miss Georgina Jones, my wonderful Assistant Director of Music, without whom none of the above would be possible. Mr Kit Perona-Wright

Summer Serenade Well done to all of our talented musicians who took part in the Summer Serenade this week. The concert comprised of pieces by some of The Prep's smaller music groups (inlcuding the String Orchestra, Wind Band, Piano Trio, etc) as well as a chance to hear the winning soloists from last term's House Music Competition. It's been a very busy week for Prep musicians, who delivered a wonderful Lower School Informal Concert and Year 2 Assembly!

Kingfishers The Nursery children braved a day of the worst weather for a long while and continued with their trip to the Cotswold Farm Park, not allowing the dampness to drench their enjoyment and enthusiasm. For many, it was their first time on a coach and that provides excitement in itself. However, watching a goat being milked, a sheep being sheared and handling the rabbits and chicks all proved great learning opportunities for them all. They also met some of the new arrivals at the farm - a kid goat, a number of piglets and a lamb. A little sleep on the coach on the way home for some brought a lovely day to an end.

Family Forest School

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1860 19 May 2017

Parents and children spent a lovely Saturday morning together discovering Forest School! The children were able to teach their parents the rules before heading off to explore. Everyone had great fun hunting Mini-beasts, planting seeds, making pies in the 'mud kitchen', digging for treasure in the digging pit, going on scavenger hunts and making bird feeders. The Forest School hot chocolate was, as always, a big winner! We will look forward to the next time.

This week's 'Wash Out Wednesday' meant that many of The Prep's sports fixtures were cancelled due to torrential rain. But, undeterred by the weather, Reception boys and girls took to the garden to learn about how water moves through pipes when you collect it with a funnel!

Year 2 Assembly

Last Friday, a host of famous people visited Cheltenham College Prep School for the Year 2 Assembly! Our boys and girls introduced themselves to us as all sorts of poeple, from singers and footballers, to Florence Nightingale, Edward Wilson and even Henry VIII. Year 2 put on an excellent performance; they learnt a lot while they were rehearsing and practising their lines. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it has made this Half Term's topic come to life! It gave everyone a springboard for their learning in all areas of the curriculum. The most loved character was Henry VIII and the children have decided to create posters all about his life. Please visit Kingfishers to admire their amazing posters!

Lower School Roman Adventures Inspire Creative Writing Year 3 have been reading the Roman mystery story The Thieves of Ostia by Caroline Lawrence. As each chapter ends in a really exciting cliff-hanger, we have been desperate to read on! We decided to write our own Roman mystery stories, using some of the techniques that Caroline Lawrence uses, to create a story filled with drama and suspense. ‘Dorothia curled up merrily and began to read her favourite scroll. Slowly her dark hair pushed against the wall as she was thinking about the places in her dreams. Annoyingly, her older brothers and sisters were playing with a ball loudly. She looked out of the window with her eyes that were as blue as the sea. Dorothia hated Ostia because it was noisy. She didn’t like being a Roman citizen.'

‘Later that day, Maximus went out to the woods to hunt for some meat. He was very skilful with a bow and arrow. Maximus heard a branch snap. He quickly climbed a tree. His brown hair was sweaty. Looking down, he spied a mass of black hair. It was his friend Mars!’

By Max Muirie ‘A few hours later, Georgius and Bella walked down to the forum. Bella hated it there. She couldn’t stand all of the shouting, pushing and the excitement. The pushing and shouting of the massive crowds made her feel scared, angry and alone. Carefully, the boy and girl turned a corner. They froze. There stood Venalicius…’

the end of his arm, his hand was missing. In his mouth sat his teeth which were yellow. On the side of his head was a missing ear leaving a gaping wound. Yellow pus dripped onto his shoulder. Venalicius was a slave dealer of the worst kind.’

By Ava Blackhurst ‘An hour later, Tamuis and Emma walked home. They still felt uneasy after seeing Venalicius. Suddenly Tamius froze. His hand flew to his mouth. The front door was hanging from its hinges. On the pavement, a dark pool of liquid lay… it was blood.’

Bakery Club This term has seen a new group of keen bakers join Bakery Club. They are all very enthusiastic. We have been busy baking cheese scones, cherry oat crunchies and delicious blueberry muffins. The pupils are all learning the importance of listening, following a recipe correctly, weighing out ingredients carefully, as well as the importance of teamwork, sharing and helping each other.

Craft Club Middle School pupils have been busy creating sand art, using repeating patterns and contrasting colours to great effect. Everyone will be designing and creating more crafts in the coming weeks, watch this space!

Team of the Week U10A v Clifton College, won by 7 wickets The Year 5 A team have had a great start to the season. Not only are we currently unbeaten, after good wins against RGS The Grange, Beaudesert and Abberley Hall, it has been the manner of the victories that has impressed. In all the matches every boy in the team has bowled and over the three matches every boy in the team has had a bat. Clifton was going to be a hard game. They were also unbeaten and we knew their captain was a strong batsman who would score runs and therefore it was vital we played as a team to take on their very talented individual. We bowled first, giving everyone a chance, and put in 20 good overs of outstanding fielding that brought rave reviews from the opposition parents. Three superb catches and a wonderful run out put us into a great position before their captain came in and scored a quickfire 40 runs to put the game into the balance. We headed for tea with Clifton 108/4 off the 20 overs. Cheltenham’s opening pair batted solidly, slowly building the score and seeing off the Clifton pace bowlers. The middle order for Cheltenham scored quickly, running up the score and the match finished up early with Cheltenham 112/3 off 18 overs. A superb win that sets us up for a match against the Cardiff County side after half term that will really put the unbeaten season on the line.
