Headmaster's Blog Dear Parents As we experience weather more akin to that which greets us on our return in September, I write to thank all parents for their support over the past academic year. I will speak in more depth at Parents’ Day and, for those who are unable to attend, my words will be published in our record of this academic year, Prep for the Year. I mention this, not because I think that the speech is particularly entertaining, but instead because it contains reference to my wholehearted sense of awe and gratitude in what all parents manage in order to offer such opportunities to their children. As we approach Parents’ Day, I am always mindful that this is probably the most difficult time to convince all of the children that we value their best. The obvious reason for this is that all will not get a prize on Friday or Saturday and despite my reassurances, it is understandable that some are disappointed. But this is the ‘nature of the beast’ and we must not allow the message, that life is competitive, to be lost. I hope to see as many of you as possible over the final two days of term and, if I don’t manage to speak to you personally, may I wish you a happy and enjoyable summer. Jon Whybrow
Congratulations to Joshua Poulain who won a Karting Championship after a 10 round completion over a gruelling 20 weeks. He had led from the 5th round and maintained his lead through to a closely fought round 10. Joshua will begin testing the next stage of karts in the next few weeks - well done!
Fifteen Year 8s visited Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, our Charity of the Year, this week. The Hospice was founded by Sue Ryder in the 1970s and is the only hospice in Gloucestershire. The pupils were able to learn about the vital work carried out there. They also had a guided tour around this grade two listed building, where they learned about its fascinating history. They were amazed it was once a German POW camp. The morning finished with the pupils trying their hands at an art activity. It was a great opportunity for everyone to see the work of our school charity. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1865 30 June 2017

Kingfishers To finish off our topic work based around the seaside, Year One watched a terrific traditional Punch and Judy show! There was lots of laughter, delight and excitement from the children, who acted out the history of Punch and Judy by dressing up as King Charles II, Samuel Pepys and Senor Bologna. They then enjoyed the main show, watching Punch get up to his usual mischief, alongside Judy, the baby, a policeman, a crocodile and a monkey!
Although the sun didn't have his hat on, this didn't dampen spirits at the Cottage beach party. There was sand, paddling pools filled with balls and even a few sombreros, as the children danced and played. The highlight of the afternoon was the arrival of the ice cream van and everyone enjoyed their treats! It was a wonderful way to finish their topic on water.
It has been a very busy year in Kingfishers and on Tuesday we were able to celebrate all of the children's accomplishments, during the annual Kingfishers Prize Giving ceremony. Each child received a Headmaster's Commendation from Mr Whybrow, which reflected their personal achievements. Thank you again for all your support this year and we wish you a very happy holiday. Lower School finished the year on a high note. Whilst Year 3 had their activity day and sleepover, Year 4 went on their long awaited Bushcraft trip. Both trips were hugely successful and showed just what a long way the pupils had come in growing up since the start of the year. Any nerves about sleeping away from home were quickly put aside and the emphasis was on joining in and having fun.

The Pille y Bridge Nature Re a tasty B serve and B Headma Q on the ster's law n!
Year 3 started their two-day adventure with a variety of activities both off and on site. Visiting the nature reserve in Pilley Bridge, Year 3 observed and drew nature, did some pond dipping to find water creatures and, best of all, made rafts to float Maltesers. Impressively, nearly every raft floated and no Maltesers were lost to the fishes! On our return to base, orienteering challenges awaited, with children puzzling their way through to work out a secret message. Hats off to all our Year 3s for their creative and innovative creations inspired by Andy Goldsworthy, amazing art created from nature. Following a BBQ supper, Year 3 had movie night, and gradually drifted off with sleeping bags to dream about all their day’s adventures and more to come. Bright and early next morning, we joined the Boarders for a delicious breakfast of toast and bacon, hot chocolate and jam: what a spread! Everyone set themselves up really well for their trip to Cattle Country.
try Meeting the animals & being farmers for a day at Cattle Coun
We all loved the animals and activities at Cattle Country, feeding the baby calves and holding the rabbits; it was difficult to decide which animal was the cutest. The highlight for many were the different slides that were there. Who was brave enough to go on the ‘death slide’? Would the teachers join in? Tired and happy, we all trooped home for an early pick up. What a brilliant year we have had in Lower School: so many adventures, so much learning and progress made and everyone growing in responsibility and maturity. Our Year 3s are looking forward to the opportunities of Year 4. Our Year 4s are looking forward to the challenges of Middle School. A big thank you to all the Lower School staff and teachers who have played such a big part in helping all our boys and girls fulfil their potential this year. We wish everyone a happy and restful Summer!

Year 4 Bushcraft Experience During the penultimate week of the 2016-17 academic year, Year 4 pupils and staff ventured bravely into the great British wilderness to experience life in the wild! The children camped in the middle of the woods and made their own shelters to sleep under, rather than the more comfortable tent option. Working in tribes throughout the week, the group developed their own tribal dances and chants, flags and a base to sleep in. The food on offer was fantastic and all children needed to learn to start a fire and cook their own food to survive the week. Luckily, all managed this. For many, the highlight of the week was the pizza making and using the outdoor pizza ovens to cook them. The salmon panasse was also a favourite, along with s’mores toasted on the campfire.

One important survival skill the group learnt was to camouflage themselves, which aided them in their favourite game, Predator. This required the children to make their way from one tree to another without being spotted. The campers played other games in the woods, which were great fun. Swimming in the fresh water lake proved to be an early morning wake-up call and, when they had recovered, they managed to catch some crayfish, take part in a wilderness walk and much more throughout the week. After a final lunch of bush-crafted fajitas, it was time to say goodbye. The Year 4 pupils had the most amazing experience at Bushcraft and were now prepared to live in the bush – almost! A huge thanks goes to the staff involved in organising the trip and for making it such a great success. 6

Upper School As part of the post-Common Entrance programme, Year 8 were hosted by College to undertake a series of Mathematical Challenges. Competing in teams of 4, they had to solve a variety of tricky problems. Teamwork was critical as they had to rely on their partners to solve one part of a puzzle before they could move on to solve subsequent parts. It was great to see the pupils looking comfortable in their College surroundings, where many of them will be studying next year. Well done to the winning team, who received a chocolate orange!
Girls Dare to be Different Last Friday, a group of Year 7 girls were fortunate enough to be part of a WISE (Women In Science and Engineering) event at Wolverhampton University. They were taking part in various activities, such as a pit stop challenge, robotics, simulators, 3D printing and inspirational talks from women currently involved in the world of science and engineering, all in the university: brand new, state-of-the-art facilities, which have cost some £12 million to construct. The girls were a credit to the school and the organiser’s were very impressed with their team work and levels of involvement. The day’s events gave them lots to think about, having greatly enjoyed themselves and learnt much. I hope to be attending many similar events in the future.
