Headmaster's Blog Headmaster's Commendations James Futers

For his quiet dedication to his work in the evening CDT activity.

Dear Parents The weekend’s House Swimming Gala is one of the main House events of the year. The House system is a much respected and enthusiastically supported tradition and the gala is probably the highlight of the year. In no other competition do all House members contribute to the overall result and perform in front of their peers. Over the years that I have been involved in independent education, the House system has evolved to encompass such events as baking, art, music and design technology. Although there are those who decry the desire to make everything competitive, by widening the range of activities one offers more opportunities to different pupils to succeed and enjoy the experience of winning. Kingfishers Update Nursery Colour Activities We have had a focus on colour and rainbow painting this week in the Nursery. The children have been involved in a variety of activities exploring colour and colour mixing. These included hand printing, rainbow painting, colour blending with skittles and sorting.

Recycling Adventures The children in Reception and the Nursery had a little change to their routine on Wednesday when they walked to the Bath Road in order to recycle some bottles. Part of their topic this Half Term has been learning all about the importance of recycling. They correctly identified the bottle bank as the correct place to dispose of the bottles which they had identified as being made from glass. Each child had a turn to put in a bottle and listen for the crash that followed!

Lower School News Year 3 Plants and the Environment Day On Friday 9 March, Year 3 welcomed Mr Shane Gue from Inspired Forest Schools into Lower School for a day of outdoor learning. The day began with a reading of Hoot Owl, a fantastic picture book about an owl that persevered in his hunt for food, making decisions about how to find it along the way. Mr Gue told the children the book was a great way to introduce the idea of Forest School, in that they would be given activities to do, but how they went about them and how they solved any problems were entirely up to them. The important thing was to demonstrate resilience and to persevere. The first activity involved planting a variety of seeds whether in ready-made recyclable pots, or in pots the children would need to make themselves. The only resource for this was a piece of newspaper and a pot mould. Many children seized the opportunity to make their own pots and some were so keen, they decided to teach others how to do it. It was not long before we all headed outside and used the Lower School environment to make tree rubbings and play leadership games. It was impressive to see the children adopting the role of leader and helping others learn the rules. The most exciting part of the day came next. Year 3 ventured out in boiler suits and boots and made their way into the Forest School area. Mr Gue held a meeting at base camp to discuss the rules and then introduced various activities. One was a treasure hunt and another the chance to make a wand by whittling wood. For the rest of the day, the children worked together or alone, to create mud sculptures and to explore the environment around them. Many ended up covered in mud but all designed some fantastic work and discovered much about themselves as people, as well as how to make their own decisions. What an amazing day and we are very grateful to Mr Gue for spending the day with us and for showing us all the great opportunities that Forest School learning has to offer. Year 4 Viking Day The Year 4 pupils took part in a fantastic Viking Day. The day reinforced and extended their knowledge of this period of time when the Vikings invaded and settled in Britain. It was a great opportunity to complete lots of Design Technology work, team work and much more. The day started with an inter-class Viking Quest with each class working through an interactive game to invade Britain and return with as much loot, religious artefacts and slaves as possible. The pupils worked together to choose their crew, the boat, the route and their actions when arriving in Britain. It was great fun and the chief of each class had the following to say: 4T – “Well done for not burning down the monastery at Lindisfarne as the warriors can now return for another raid. Your gold collection was impressive.” 4S – “You gained poor amounts of silver, a good selection of artefacts and lots of slaves, but you took too long. You also lost too many crew members. I am not pleased that you burnt the monastery down. How can we return to raid Lindisfarne again?” 4P – “Your raiding skills were an insult. You are banished from the village and will work on a fishing boat from now on!” 4T turned out to be the eventual winners, collecting 295 silver coins, 17 religious artefacts and 8 slaves, which resulted in an impressive score of 795. Congratulations to 4T for defending their Year 4 Viking Quest battle. For the rest of the morning, the classes worked together to make three Viking villages, consisting of huts, town halls, rivers, Viking Longboats and Viking Warriors. We would love you to visit each of the classrooms to see the end result. The fun continued in the afternoon as each class completed three further activities. They learnt about how to build a Viking Longship, how to replicate Viking brooches and made some very impressive Viking shields. Again, we would love you to visit each of the classrooms to see these wonderful creations.

Music Department Update Wow, what a busy few weeks it has been with music. Firstly, well done to our Brass Quintet made up of Sophie Essenhigh, Tallulah Thomson, Harry Dawson, Jamie Reid and Charlie Keene who were very worthy semi-finalists at the Pro Corda Chamber Festival Competition. They played superbly and were a credit to the music department.

House Music We had nearly 200 entries on all instruments ranging from guitar, drums, violins, flutes and so on and so forth! It just demonstrated such a high level of music-making at the Prep and was brilliant to see all of those instruments and children learning at different levels to come forwards and perform. Everyone got their House points and the winning house will be revealed in the end of term assembly. The finals were held this week and those performers will go through to perform in the Summer Serenade next term. As well as this, we had a quintet from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra come in and perform for everyone in assembly. They played a mash up of Mars, a jazz improvisation and (much to the Headmaster’s delight) the Imperial March from Star Wars. They then held a number of workshops for children throughout the school. The Year 1s had lots of fun working with them and played lots of music games to help them develop their skills on the violin. As well as this, Year 6 were treated to a lesson of rhythm games which incorporated both the cello and double bass played by Alex McCombie and Felix Warr. The Quintet then went on to work with our Lower School String Group and our two double bass players, Willoughby Cooke and Felix Warr. Finally, the day rounded up with an afternoon working with Lower School in the Assembly Hall. They worked on composing a blues-style piece using body percussion and different rhythms. This workshop built on what they had completed in the Autumn Term workshop and will hopefully culminate in a final performance in the Lower School Summer Concert next term. Watch this space! Don’t miss next week’s performance of Treasure Island, which looks set to be a great adventure! Ahoy! Prep for The Week Issue Number 1886 16 March 2018

Boarding House Update We have had a busy couple of weeks in the Boarding House, with a few extra Boarders snowed in over the previous weekend. We had to change plans from our visit to the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon due to the heating being broken in the pool. There was a choice of bowling or cinema on Sunday afternoon and plenty of opportunities to play in the snow. Thank you to Mrs Reid and Mr Newson for coming in and helping with the trips and being available despite the inclement weather! The Boarders loved the chance to dress up for World Book Day, as shown by some of the photos from breakfast, as well as some snaps from them enjoying the snow. On Tuesday evening some of the House went to watch Cheltenham Town vs Notts County in a thrilling 1 - 1 draw. After all that activity it was a much needed Exeat break before the busy last two weeks of term.

The Acheson Library Development Project During the Easter holidays we are excited to be embarking on an entire refurbishment project of the library at The Prep. Having been carefully designed and planned with specialist company, Demco, alongside staff at The Prep, we very much look forward to: - A state of the art, 21st century library facility at the heart of our school. - A multi-media hub designed to facilitate independent and collaborative research. - A space which accommodates and encourages reading for pleasure in comfortable, visually appealing surroundings. - A carefully organised layout that makes the library experience easy, enjoyable and inspiring. - An opportunity to embrace the unique space and make the most of the stunning features. The children are very much at the heart of the plans and, as such, have the opportunity to submit their suggestions for a quote and image to be incorporated into the design. The winning ideas will receive a prize as well as their proposal actually becoming reality. Do come along and view the plans which are on display in Yard Hall next to Mr Whybrow's study to see what all the excitement is about! These give a real sense of how the space will be used although we look forward to the 'real thing' coming to life in a Prep palette of blues, greys and pinks. We have been delighted to receive a match fund of ÂŁ25,000 from the Cheltenham College Charitable Trust and hope to raise ÂŁ25,000 towards the overall costs of this exciting project to be able to put all of the incredible features planned into the development. If you would like to find out more or get involved, please do contact Christiane Dickens in the Development office on 07881 706815 or c.dickens@cheltenhamcollege.org

Girls Sport Team of the Week - U12B The U12B team concluded a super season in fine style by beating Dean Close 9 - 4 at home. We dominated the first and second quarters in all areas of the game. Our centre court players moved swiftly with accurate passing; the defenders controlled their domain with dynamic interceptions and counter-attacks, whilst the shooters had a fruitful spell, netting a wide variety of shots. The visitors came back in the third quarter but as the wind whipped up for the final 10 minutes, neither team were able to convert opportunities into goals and the match was comfortably won. All members of the team should be proud of their efforts this term, with everyone enjoying the chance of playing exciting netball in a determined and cheerful team.

Cross-Country Success After some fantastic performances in the Cheltenham Primary Schools Cross Country League over the past two terms, five of our girls qualified to represent Cheltenham in the County Cross Country competition last week.
