Headmaster's Blog

Dear Parents Recently, I have found that my timetable has allowed me the opportunity to cover the lunch queue duty. This is the ideal opportunity for me to meet as many children in the school as possible as they prepare to go into lunch. Kingfishers and Lower School take their lunch beforehand, sitting with staff at the table, whereas those children in Years 5-8 queue, before enjoying a more adult cafeteria experience. Firstly, let me assure you about one thing, in my previous experience of this system, the average time spent by children at the table is eight minutes. Here at the Prep, I regularly enjoy watching children take anywhere between 15 and 25 minutes to finish their meal as they welcome the opportunity to sit and relax in the company of their friends, savouring the food provided by Holroyd Howe. The atmosphere is a calm one, maintained by ensuring that as few children are moving around and/or queuing actually in the dining room. Consequently, I or the member of staff on duty, presides over queues in the foyer adjacent to the dining room. Children are let in by Year group and the order is changed from day to day. Wednesdays are different as it is always necessary to get the ‘away’ teams fed, and on their way first.

Those with clubs, music lessons etc are always prioritised. If at all possible, Year 8 are allowed to wait in their Common Room whilst all other year groups are encouraged to play outside prior to their meal time, rather than simply stand in a long line. Strangely, most children are reluctant to do this, preferring the security of the queue. This, I believe, is all about ‘belonging’ and worrying about with whom they will sit. Suffice to say, the lunchtime experience is a calm one and the food on offer is good. There is also another member of staff who ‘patrols’ the dining room and many staff choose to sit with the children. In this way, we do our best to encourage good manners and eating appropriate amounts. Finally, we have adjusted our menus to feed children with foods which offer a slow release of energy on match days. A generous portion of belly pork just before refereeing duties encouraged me to demand this! Mr Jon Whybrow Headmaster

Headmaster's Commendations Ruby Stevenson For excellent Coach House literacy work completed over Christmas.

Franchesca Flexer For choosing to complete an incredible Viking fact board at home.

Ava Blackhurst Being brave and honest. Having a difficult conversation with an adult about an important school matter. Showing great responsibility and maturity.

Charlie Keene Compassion and empathy shown to another pupil.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Headmaster Phil Davies. 'WPC' led the school from 1964 to 1986 and played for the English Rugby team as well as being selected for the Lions on their 1955 tour of South Africa. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Kingfishers Update This week, the Year 1 children have been immersing themselves in the story of the Gingerbread Man. First, they tried their hands at being 'authors', writing their own versions of the story from scratch. Then, they transformed themselves into fantastic storytellers as they began to learn the story by heart. In addition, they have had great fun taking on the role of different characters, with the Gingerbread Man being the firm favourite! However, all of the children agreed that by far the best part of the week was getting to make and gobble their very own delicious gingerbread men! The children have also been very busy practising their assembly. They have been immensely proud of themselves for thinking of their own lines to say and are very much looking forward to sharing their hard work with their families next week. Please join us in the Assembly Hall on Friday 9 February where their assembly will start at 9.15am.

Kookaburra Club Kookaburra Club really look forward to Wednesdays when we have the Fourth Form pupils from College to help. The Kingfishers really squeeze every drop of fun and energy out of them for the duration of the club. We love playing games outside, but on occasions when it is too wet we cosy up for story time. Thank you Fourth Form for all of your help! Prep for The Week Issue Number 1881 2 February 2018

Lower School News Year 3 Geography Field Trip Year 3 found out how to conduct Geography field work on their visit to Bath Road. Armed with clip boards and maps, we worked our way from Kew Place up to the Norwood Roundabout. The purpose of our trip was to find out everything we could about the land use on Bath Road. Using observation, listening and discussion skills we worked out what the buildings were being used for, whether they were shops, businesses or residential premises. We were amazed at the huge variety of shops that were available. We soon realised that there were a lot of shops selling food as well as restaurants, cafés and take-aways. Back in class we started to question why this would be. Carefully recording the names and type of shops has enabled us to create our own maps with proper keys in class and from this we will continue to investigate our local area. Meanwhile, other members of the year were conducting a survey of the public. We wanted to know who was visiting Bath Road and the purpose of their visit. This will help us to build a full picture of the kind of people that come to Bath Road and why the shops and services we found are doing business there. The confidence and politeness of our survey group was impressive and we have a good set of results to use in class. I am really proud of our Year 3s, how polite and considerate they are to other members of the public and how sensibly they walk to events. Despite how chilly it was, everyone remembered their manners and many of the shopkeepers were really welcoming to our pupils and more than happy to explain a little more about their shop and what they sold. Good work Lower School.

Parents' Evenings We look forward to seeing all of our parents at some point during our Monday and Tuesday Parents’ Evenings. Please do take the opportunity to look through your child’s work which will be located outside their classroom. Late stay will take place in the main library between 4.00pm and 6.00pm on both of these nights. Pupils should be collected from the library after your appointment. Thank you! 5

Bringing the Earth to Life On Wednesday the Geography department welcomed the Freshwater Theatre Company into school to help our Year 6 students discover how and why volcanoes and earthquakes occur - using nothing but themselves as props!

Geography and Drama Workshop

The students learnt about the different types of volcanoes and how we can learn about historic eruptions by using archaeology. Year 6 then proceeded to travel to Italy, the USA, Chile, Japan and the Indian Ocean to learn more about specific eruptions and earthquakes and how they can affect people and places - all without leaving the hall! It was great to see every student wholly immerse themselves in the morning, which included acting out the Mount St Helens volcanic eruption and reconstructing a disaster relief operation in San Francisco. Lots of questions were asked at the end, and the students can now use their experiences to enhance their learning in the classroom.

Meet the Teachers!

As part of the feedback survey that we sent out last term, one point that came up was parents' desires to know the teachers more. In response we will now be running a 'getting to know you' feature with a different teacher each week! First up is Mrs Hamlyn...

Job Title - Deputy Head (Academic) Favourite thing about teaching - No day is ever the same! Favourite thing about The Prep - It is such a fun, happy place to be. Favourite food - A very difficult decision but probably sushi followed by something chocolatey for pudding. Ideal holiday destination - I would love to visit Mauritius or South Africa. Favourite book - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Favourite film or TV show - I love to watch things that make me laugh. Favourite subject at school - English and Art. Favourite sport - Definitely skiing! Least favourite subject at school - Maths (sorry Dr Gilmour!) Things you love to do - Spending time with my friends and family (which is huge!), going for afternoon tea, exploring and having fun. If you weren't a teacher, you would be... A lawyer.

Sport Update

Team of the Week - The Boys' Hockey 3rds winning 6 - 2 against Dean Close

Ahead of the match the team was quietly confident that they could get a draw or snatch a win against a strong Dean Close team. What followed was beyond all of our expectations as the 3rd team saved their best and most accomplished performance of the season, so far, to totally dominate the game. They stuck to their positions and controlled the game by creating lots of space out wide. They were very supportive of each other knowing the importance of the whole team defending, when necessary, and attacking from the back. They were deservedly 3-0 up at half time having taken their chances well. Dean Close pulled one back early in the second half but the response to this was fantastic. They could easily have panicked but instead they took control of the game again and quickly scored two goals in reply to go ahead 5 - 1 and put the game out of reach. In the closing minutes both teams scored again to leave us winning 6-2. The victory was based around a very solid partnership at the back where they were calm and patient, even when under pressure, ensuring Dean Close had few chances throughout the game. A wonderful team performance! Prep for The Week Issue Number 1881 2 February 2018
