Headmaster's Blog

Dear Parents And so we reach half-term of the difficult bit in the middle. As expected, specific challenges in the shape of staff and pupil illness have been encountered and we arrive at the break just in time. As someone who likes to work hard and play hard, I feel slightly hypocritical as I encourage parents to allow children a period of rest over the week. Probably a balance of activity and ‘chilling’ is ideal, but if you sense that your child is waning, inactivity must be best as we prepare for the second half of term. On our return, the emphasis will be on manners. Although the children will be relatively refreshed, traditionally the latter end of the Spring Term is the time when antagonisms between children surface and intensify and even the smallest disagreements cause major consequences. Therefore, simple manners such as opening the door, greetings, ‘please’, ‘thank you’ and ‘after you’ become more important.

My best wishes go to those in Year 8 whose half-term must be punctuated by some revision and I wish them good luck for their mock examinations on our return. We often discuss the value of sitting Common Entrance, the results of which are not used for entrance purposes, but instead for setting on arrival at College. One benefit is undeniable; having prepared and sat such a challenging set of examinations in Year 8, working towards GCSEs is not a step into the unknown. Mr Jon Whybrow Headmaster

Thank You I would like to thank all of you who have taken part in our feedback survey over the past couple of months. The results have been both encouraging and useful in terms of improving the offering we provide to our parents, both current and prospective. The winner of the prize draw will be contacted over Half Term, good luck!

Headmaster's Commendations Jemima Penny Excellent commitment. Jemima has been dedicated to practicing her times tables and as a consequence is the first to achieve the 99 Club.

Ellianna Collins Having learnt about the impact of using fossil fuels in Science, Elliana wrote to the Prime Minister voicing her concerns and making suggestions for alternative energy resources. She received a letter back responding to her specific suggestions. A great example of independent initiative, empathy and taking action.

Star Jamieson For creating a poster highlighting the dangers of plastic to our world.

Eva Brown A fantastic effort on a range of tricky spelling assessments. Eva showed great perseverance.

Kingfishers Update Love was in the air at the Reception Classes Parents' Assembly. The children explained which their favourite animals were and why they loved them. They then sang a sweet song about love before reading what they had written about loving in their family. The children then presented their parents with a rose and a hug.

Big Bang Science The atmosphere was electric in Mr Webber’s Big Bang Science Club this Saturday. The children were able to investigate how electric travels and were given the opportunity to build their own electrical circuits. They were ‘shocked’ to learn how the human body was a good conductor of electricity after holding the Van de Graaff. What a super Science Saturday! Lower School News

It's almost time for our annual visit to Dundry Nurseries which is home to the magical Butterfly Garden. The Butterfly Garden provides educational activities and opportunities for students with learning disabilities. This is a fantastic experience for our Year 3 children and one which we all enjoy. The children are given so many opportunities during the visit to be involved in many aspects of the centre. During our visit we are very well looked after by the volunteers, staff and students who go above and beyond to make this such a pleasurable day. The Butterfly Garden is a registered charity and is dependent upon donations and fund raising in order to maintain and continue with its valuable service to the community. Throughout the week they have over 100 students who benefit from the groups and activities available there. Recently they have set up a music group which is thriving, however they are in need of donations of musical instruments to enable the many students to participate. We felt that this was an ideal opportunity for us to say thank you for everything they offer to us when we visit. Therefore, we are asking if you or a family member have any musical instruments that need a new home, would you be willing to donate them to this worthy cause? If you are able to help we would be grateful if you could bring any donations to Lower School prior to the visit on the 23 February. The Butterfly Garden is a truly inspirational place and holds a very special place in our hearts at Lower School. If you would like to see more about what they provide for the students please click on the link.

Lower School History Labyrinths were spotted all over Lower School this week as Year 3 were challenged to design their own mazes. As part of our Ancient Greek History topic, Year 3 found out about the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. We discovered about the Greek hero Theseus and what made a good maze or labyrinth and then had great fun designing and building our own. Everything from pencil and paper, Lego bricks, straws and the contents of our pencil cases were used to build our mazes. We had to check them to make sure they only had one entrance, one route and one exit. We had loads of fun creating dead ends. We think we probably could have kept the minotaur trapped in his maze.

Year 3 Maths Year 3 have been having lots of fun in Maths this week and are consolidating their learning by making 3D shapes from nets! 5

This week some of our Year 5 and 6 pupils represented The Prep at a Maths Competition hosted by Cheltenham College. The pupils, working in teams of four, pitted their wits against other schools in a series of mathematical challenges. A vast variety of puzzles were set including crossword puzzles, word problems, sequences and relay puzzles; all of which required team work and strategic thinking.

Although they were not the overall winners, the pupils embraced the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Some great potential was displayed…

Meet the Teachers!

As part of the feedback survey that we sent out last term, one point that came up was parents' desires to learn more about our staff. We will now be running a 'getting to know you' feature with a different teacher each week! This week, we meet Mr Boyd...

Job Title - Head of Design & Technology Favourite thing about teaching - The paperwork! Only kidding, the look of excitement on a child’s face when the learning has amazed them! Favourite thing about The Prep - The strength and support from the Common Room. Favourite food - a well spiced Thai curry. Ideal holiday destination - I would love to explore the Amazon rain forest and the Inca trail. Favourite book - The Bible. Favourite film or TV show -Suits / The Shawshank Redemption. Favourite subject at school - D&T. Favourite sport - Hockey / Skiing. Least favourite subject at school - History (Apologies Mr Baird, I did not have a teacher like you!). Things you love to do - Go for a bike ride, get in my kit car for a spin, play board games with family, dinner parties, discuss my Christian faith with others, game shooting, play competitive sport, or anything outdoors! If you weren't a teacher, you would be... A farmer.

Boarding House Update On Saturday afternoon, along with all the usual activities, the Houseparents' Lounge turned into a rugby viewing zone with a variety of different teams being supported. The Boarders enjoyed some snacks and drinks, and this was followed by options of football and swimming before supper. The evening films and popcorn went down well and a good nights sleep was had after a busy week. On Sunday afternoon the Boarders headed into town to Mr Mulligan's Lost World Golf, the first trip from school to this newly opened establishment. There were great reports of high levels of competition as the five groups battled it out to get round in the least shots. Many thanks to Miss Sheehan and the Gap Students for their leadership and fun on the trip. We hope that all the Boarders enjoy a good rest over half term, it has been a short but intense few weeks and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready to tackle the second half of term. Girls Sport Team of the Week - U11A Another fantastic team effort from the U11As this week; their hard work in training this half of term is definitely paying off and they are going from strength to strength! Our defence were as solid as ever, only allowing our opposition to score two goals! One of the most impressive improvements so far, was the pace at which they were playing and moving the ball up the court. Making better use of space around the centre of the court meant that we could feed our attacking players and dominate a lot of the possession. Although the opposition also had a very strong defence, our shooters were on fire, scoring some amazing goals from a longer range. Well done girls! We are looking forward to making even more improvements after Half Term!

Tennis Academy Dates The names of those selected for the Tennis Academy are now up on the sports notice board. Please make a note of the training rota below if your daughter is involved.

Boys Sport Team of the Week - U9A Football Team Having thrown away a two goal lead to end up drawing at home, earlier in the season, the U9A football team were keen to show their vast improvements as they travelled away to St Hugh's on Wednesday. The first half began with the Cheltenham boys dominating possession and territory, building large amounts of pressure on the St Hugh's goal. After a slick passing move, that showed excellent movement off the ball, we finished with a sneaky shot into the nearpost goal. The St Hugh's defence were now being opened up more regularly with some excellent cross field balls, using the full width of the pitch, and the Cheltenham boys extended their lead to 2-0 with a powerful finish. It became 3-0 just before the half time whistle blew. After a quick drink and some lovely orange slices the rejuvenated boys took to the field again. After a substitution, the Cheltenham boys found themselves playing in different positions and having to learn on the job. Defensively Cheltenham were very solid at the back and our midfielders did an excellent job in tracking back to help out. Nevertheless, an excellent breakaway goal for St Hugh's left the score at 3-1. Cheltenham's substitute managed to leave his mark with a cool finish to end the game 4-1. An excellent and competitive game of football was enjoyed by all. Well played to the boys and a well deserved win. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1882 9 February 2018

Christmas & Easter Fun Time in the Nursery In December, we ran our first Christmas Fun Time session in our Kingfishers Nursery. Children in Kingfishers and Reception were able to enjoy extra fun after the end of term. One of the favourite activities included numerous trips to the Forest School followed by hot chocolate and yummy biscuits. Our boys and girls enjoyed festive cooking in Lower School and making their own wrapping paper and Christmas decorations. With plenty of time to relax and play indoors and outdoors with their friends, our little ones had some wonderful Christmas fun. Look out for our Easter Fun Time week at the beginning of the Easter Holidays.
