Although I have already communicated to you via a clarion email the arrangements for the announcement of the new class groupings, I would like to reiterate three things. Firstly, every effort is taken to satisfy the requests of the children using the ‘hands of friendship’ technique. On account of the mathematics involved, it is not a perfect or failsafe system. However, it does offer the best chance that children will be in a class with a friend. Secondly, widening one’s social circle and learning to adjust to different groupings is an important skill. And finally, I reserve the right to adjust the groupings if I see fit, especially in the light that The Prep continues to recruit well into July and August. As we enter the final week of this academic year, I encourage the whole school community to work together to ensure a smooth conclusion to what has been a year of great progress and achievement. We are mindful that the pupils are tiring, especially those in the upper years who have been involved in examinations, trips abroad and new and challenging experiences. As such, pupils in Years 7 and 8 will not have academic lessons this Saturday. They should make the most of an opportunity to recharge their batteries ready for their matches on Saturday and the final week of term.

Kingfishers Update Reception and Nursery Summer Performance On Wednesday, the children from the Nursery and Reception classes had a wonderful time entertaining their family and friends with a performance of Summer Holiday. The story featured two travel agents who were tired of watching everyone else go on holiday. Their dilemma was where would they go and how would they get there? The Nursery cast members provided transport ideas with songs including, ‘Row, row, row your boat’, ‘Aeroplanes all in a row’, ‘Driving in my car’ and ‘Chug, chug chugging on a train’. The Reception cast members acted out different types of holiday suggestions including a traditional seaside holiday, collecting shells on an Hawaiian beach or scuba diving in the ocean. Where would you choose to go?

Reception Landing Day “Oh I do like to be beside the seaside, Oh I do like to be beside the sea”: the children had a great time playing traditional holiday games to round off their topic of ‘Summer Holidays’. There were fiercely contested games of boules, bowling and not forgetting a holiday favourite, crazy golf. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1896 22 June 2018

Kingfishers Update Years 1 & 2 Landing Day (Big Top Party) Year 1 and Year 2's topic came to an end yesterday and they celebrated in style. Armed with popcorn and under our very own Kingfishers Big Top, the children performed their own circus acts. We had funny clowns, amazing acrobats, hula hoopers and jugglers. The children made the teachers very proud with their participation and teamwork.

Pinocchio Performance Year 1 and Year 2's summer performance of Pinocchio dazzled audiences this week. The children sang their hearts out and performed with so much enthusiasm! Well done Year 1 and Year 2!

Lower School Young Apprentice Day Lord Sugar AKA Mr Theedom set the challenge of designing and making a brand new cereal. The brief included packaging, benefits, advertising, a presentation and creating a jingle. A lot to achieve in just one day; the teams were clearly going to have to work together on this.

Lower School News

First came the Boardroom meetings. These were highly productive and very soon every team was busy at work. Decisions were made about team names, types of cereal, ingredients and who the product was aimed at. Lots of alliteration - ‘Crocodile Crunch’ and catchy names - ‘Power Bites’ - followed. Ideas flowed, group Thunderbolt were designing and making ‘Honey Munchers’. They sounded delicious; “full of honey centred goodness”, “eat this honey until it fills your tummy”. Group Gnizama had decided to make ‘Sports Boosters’! They wanted to have a special character to promote their cereal. Once the products had been decided on and boxes designed and created, presentations needed to be prepared. This was a serious business with all the competition afoot. Everybody wanted to win, some even went as far as a bit of industrial espionage! We were really lucky to have so many talented musicians over from College to help our teams create musical jingles as part of their pitch. Songs, drumming, guitar and piano were all used in an effort to create that catchy memorable tune. Every team presented in the semi-finals. What an impression they all made. So many different ideas: plays, facts, dances and songs, almost anything to make that lasting impression. After an intense final our head judge, Mr David Lait, chose the winner of the Young Apprentice 2018: Team Sherlock with their Crocodile Crunch Breakfast Cereal. Congratulations! Well done to everyone in Lower School. There was some brilliant team work, lots of fun and some very impressive ideas on display. What a great day!

Art Trip 30 boys and girls from Years 6, 7 and 8 travelled to Bristol on Tuesday morning. First of all we met Alex from the award winning 'Where the Wall' Graffiti guide and workshop company. He took us on a tour of the more famous graffiti/ street art Bristol has to offer. It was fascinating to hear the story behind the first ever legalised piece of Banksy Street Art (accidentally legal). We saw work by JPS of Weston-Super-Mare and Paris stencil artist Le Rat. The tour finished up at Bristol's old disused Police Station, a Victorian delight! The children got to do their very own stencil art, using spray cans, down in the converted cells. After lunch we went across the city to HMS Great Britain. This was in total contrast to the mornings activities, but just as enriching. The pioneering designs and ideas of Isambard Kingdom Brunel were simply breathtaking! We had a tour and we were delighted to see the brand new 'Being Brunel' Exhibition, which did not disappoint. Both of these activities would be great days out this summer, if you are looking for something to do and don't want to travel too far.

Year 5 Geography Following on from their trip to the Water Treatment Plant, this week, Year 5 have been lucky enough to have Rod King from the Estates Dept showing the children the journey of water around the school. We started with the water coming into school from Thirlestaine Road, where it goes (up to a hidden tank above the Boarding House and down into the deepest depths of the school basement), how big the pipes are, how it’s used, and then the fun part of where the waste water goes; most of our time was spent looking down the drains! The children loved looking at the route of water once the toilets had been flushed, and gained a better appreciation of not blocking them! The rainwater tanks were also inspected and the children soon realised where a huge amount of their tennis balls/moon balls/cricket balls ended up, once they’d travelled from the roof, along the gutters and down the pipes from stray throws! A fun way of learning more about water around the school as well as the benefit of accurate throwing and catching; a huge thank you to Rod King for giving up his time and answering some very odd questions from the excitable Year 5s!

More Skiing Success Congratulations to Ted M who had more skiing success last weekend. Ted competed in the Gloucester Club National Ski Championships on Sunday 17 June at Gloucester Ski centre and came 2nd place in the U10 category. Great stuff Ted! Prep for The Week Issue Number 1896 22 June 2018

Girls' Sport

Team of the Week - U13 A/B Tennis This week’s match against Bromsgrove, marked a fantastic end to the season for our top six pairs. Overall this has been an exceptional Summer Term for all of our Upper School girls, with victories in the vast majority of our matches. Playing in a group of three, our girls played some fabulous tennis and their competitive drive was the strongest of the season. They were determined to end on a high and this set the tone for the afternoon. The girls really put into practice all of their coaching and the progress in their game since the start of the year was clearly visible. They were superb ambassadors for girls’ sport at The Prep.

Tennis Results U13 (6 Home pairs) vs Bromsgrove 10.5 - 6.5 U13 (15 Away pairs) vs Bromsgrove 26 - 10

Rounders Results U11A vs Berkhampstead 8 - 11 U11B vs Berkhampstead 14 - 7.5 U10A vs Berkhampstead 7-9 U10B vs Berkhampstead 7.5 - 15.5 Prep for The Week Issue Number 1896 22 June 2018

Boys' Sport Cricket Update This has been a busy week of cricket, despite all the trips that have taken place and there has been some wonderful play on the wickets. On Friday night we had a superb evening over on College square. The College 1st XI took on Charlton King’s Cricket Club U18s in a 20/20, alongside our U9A also taking on Charlton Kings and our U10A taking on the Cheltenham District U10s. It was a lovely night for cricket and was a wonderful example of the sporting pathway here at the school showing cricket from 8 years old to 18. Our U10s were up against a very strong opposition and bowled and fielded superbly, keeping a representative side down to 127 off the 20 overs. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite perform with the bat and therefore went down, but the aim of that game was to compete with the representative side and the boys certainly did so. The U9s had a superb win over Charlton Kings with the boys continuing their rich vein of form and doing justice to the famous College Field. College U18s squeezed home in the last over and we all finished with a hog roast, making it a great night. On Saturday morning, we had co-ed Year 2 cricket fixtures. It was only an internal game, with the year group split into teams, but the standard was terrific for such a young age and showed the future is bright in this age group. On Tuesday, we sent an U12 side up to York to take place in the Super 8s Tournament, a cricket event run by St Olaves and St Peter’s York. The standard of play was of a very high quality and the boys stepped up to the mark. The boys had good wins in the morning and managed to make the semi-finals, going down to the eventual winners, QEGS. One of the highlights was to receive medals from Sir Garfield Sobers, see the photo below. Wednesday saw fixtures at the top and bottom end of the school. Our 4th and 5th XIs took on Dean Close over on College Field and came away with two superb victories. The 4th XI made 80/3 beating Dean Close’s 79/9, with the foundations of the win being built on superb fielding from the boys. The 5th XI also came away with a great win by 28 runs with some of the best batting the 5ths have played all season. The U8A team beat Pinewood U8A by 26 runs, the U8 Blue team beat Pinewood’s B team by 17 runs and the U8 White team narrowly lost to Pinewood’s other B team by 5 runs – although special mention to the team as it contained three Year 2 boys and three Year 3 girls. The non-stop cricket action continues on Friday night with the U18s, U13s and U11s all taking on Cheltenham Cricket Club over on College Field before we have a number of games against Downs Wraxall on Saturday morning.
