Headmaster's Blog

Dear Parents In a week when one of the United Kingdom’s most successful industrialists has called for primary school children to experience a compulsory mile run each and every day, the Prep School holds its own Sports Days. All children from 3 to 13 compete, experiencing the nervous energy whilst awaiting the start of an event and the triumph or despair of winning or losing. For some the emotions are extreme; a concern that a weakness will be exposed in public, the inability to win and/or lose with grace and magnanimity or a sense of fulfilment after a race well run. For most, it’s just another experience on the learning curve of any well run school which prides itself on a broad education. Wherever your child sits on this continuum of emotions, let’s all remember that mass participation is the aim and that a smooth event in which all athletes compete and some triumph. Year 8 completed their Common Entrance examinations this week and now embark on a Post-Common Entrance programme, starting with a week away in Bude. Let me explain the purpose of Common Entrance, inappropriately named as it has nothing to do with entrance to College.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1894 8 June 2018

All children destined for College, and most other senior schools, already have guaranteed places and the results of these examinations are used for setting purposes. Extreme recalcitrance could cause a senior school to review their offer, but it is going to take a spectacularly bad attitude towards these examinations for a school to review a decision to that extent. Nowadays, the true aim of Common Entrance is to offer an academic focus to the final two years in a prep school and it is also a very useful experience in preparation for preparing for and sitting GCSEs. There is much discussion about the future of Common Entrance and Mrs Hamlyn will ensure that any developments are communicated to you. A date for your diary – Saturday 16 June. On this day there are two fabulous events, one after another. The House Singing Competition in the College Chapel (10.30) and the Friends of the Prep fête (12.00). I hope to see you there! Kingfishers Update Year 2 Hockey Year 2 enjoyed a taste of an away Hockey fixture at Dean Close school this week. They split into teams and played mini tournaments against their opponents. They then sampled the delights of "Match Tea" which included Pain-auChocolate with juice. They can't wait for their next fixture!

There's a lot coming up... Don't miss the clarion that I sent out on Tuesday highlighting everything that is coming up in the next few weeks here in Kingfishers. From trips to the productions of Pinocchio and Summer Holiday, there is something for everyone in all years, and their parents, to enjoy! We look forward to welcoming you to these events over the coming week. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1894 8 June 2018

A view from the Art and DT departments As we come to the end of another very busy school year, it seems like a good time to reflect on all the wonderful projects and opportunities we have had throughout the past three terms in Art and DT. Way back in September, the Art Department arranged for ‘Hawkeye Birds of Prey’ to visit the school. The whole school got a chance to see the birds close-up, providing us with the inspiration we needed for our projects over the next two terms. Only recycled materials, such as music manuscript, old maps, newspaper and willow, were used to make the Year 8 3D birds; the children had to work in small groups to create these large flying creatures, which can be seen soaring above the foyer at The Prep. Year 7 produced large bird studio-style portraits in acrylics, and Year 6 made colourful glue drawings. We held our annual ‘Print@The Prep’ workshop for selected Year 5s and local Primary Schools. There were also opportunities to create greetings cards, and the like, as part of external competitions. Art collaborated with Science for the Annual House Art Competition ‘Any living creature and three facts about it’; we had been kindly donated some wonderful natural history books by Peter Parks to give as prizes. I had the pleasure of teaching some Kingfishers in ‘Saturday Art Attack’, a first for me, but so much fun; I am looking forward to more of these in the future. Once again, the whole school came together in the collaborative Art display of decorations for the five Christmas trees in the Dining Hall. This year’s theme?...You’ve guessed it – ‘Birds’ (of the Christmas variety)! In April, Year 5 visited this year’s SATIPS National Art Exhibition at Bromsgrove, where they were thrilled to see their bird-inspired Lino prints on display - and looking fabulous! ‘Art Enthusiasts’, in both Middle and Upper School, continue to be as popular as ever. In these groups, there is a relaxed creative atmosphere, where children can either take part in an organised activity or explore an independent interest they might have. This term, both activities have been involved in making a variety of props for the recent Middle School play, including giant luminous insects and arthropods! In Design and Technology this year saw the start of the Karting Club. The club, in its inaugural year, has allowed pupils to learn about construction and maintenance, electronics, materials, race driving and teamwork. With much focus and passion for this new initiative, their hard work has culminated in success at their first ever Greenpower Racing event, winning awards in several categories. A fantastic achievement and testament to great team work.

At the end of the Autumn Term, Mr Norman and I announced the launch of a new D&T House Competition, in the hope that it would inspire the children to creatively produce similar games that had already been in circulation. In reality, we were overwhelmed with the positive response. The level of quality and effort that went into manufacturing each game was exceptional and their endeavour will have contributed towards their house position and maybe even an individual award. I look forward to adjudicating future events. Once again, we also saw many children attend the D&T Holiday Course. With chicken headed kitchen roll holders, electric pianos and wooden tool boxes being made. These opportunities will be made available in future school holidays during the next academic year. There was a wonderful event that culminated much of the hard work of our DT and Art Scholars, when they displayed their portfolios at an exhibition held in their honour back in February. Family and friends joined them in celebrating all they had achieved at 13+; special mention should go to Luke R (13+ DT Scholarship to College), Ben B (13+ DT Exhibition to College), Freya W (13+ Art Exhibition to College) and Isabelle H-C (13+ Art Exhibition to College). Currently the Art scholars in Upper School are working with a local Artist, Amanda Johnston, on large flower oil paintings, a lovely way to reward the Year 8s for all their effort this year and also to encourage those potential scholars in Year 7; it will be they who set the standard in this coming academic year. Looking forward in the next couple of weeks, Upper School Art and DT Scholars and Enthusiasts will go on their annual trip, this year it is to Bristol. We have a Graffiti Workshop and tour with ‘Where the Wall, Bristol’ (Banksyinspired), then a tour of SS Great Britain followed by a visit to the ‘Being Brunel’ Exhibition - a day jam-packed with vibrant, exciting, mind-stretching activities. We recently heard a quote from Michael Rosen – broadcaster and children’s author:

“Arts are a means by which we can investigate and understand the past and the present, our world and our feelings. We can do this by ‘doing’ it or by ‘spectating it’ or both. Through art we can relate ourselves with other; we can discover the shape of history and humanity and where and how we fit into it.” We think he has made a fair assessment. Mrs Parsley with Mr Boyd

Flying Visit We were lucky enough to have a flying visit from the RAF Falcons on Wednesday who literally dropped in to meet us. After a fantastic display of skydiving, they stopped to give autographs and meet the pupils.

Inspired by what they saw, 5J replicated the scene and produced these brilliant creations...

Sport Update Team of the Week U12B Boys Cricket This fixture was a wonderful setting for an afternoon of Cricket, proper sun cream and ice cream weather. Also a chance to play on the hallowed U11A square with a rare mixed team of U12s, with representatives from the 3rd, 4th and 5th XIs. Although Bourneside School are relatively new to the game, they always give a good account of themselves. In the season of looking for leadership from the Year 7s, this was a good opportunity for the younger part of Upper School to prove themselves without the Year 8s. Cheltenham elected to bat first. Some good bowling from the visitors saw the opening pair make a tentative start, but they grew into the game. Although a few wickets were lost, the team enabled the first batsman to score 25, on which he was retired. The supporting cast of the middle order continued to mount a reasonable total and climbed to a respectable 98 for five. A typically wonderful Tea was followed by a team talk which focused on aiming for tight fielding and accurate bowling; while 98 was defendable, it was also breakable. The home side sent out a real statement of intent with the first over, the opening bowler taking advantage of the lack of Year 8s with a double wicket maiden, going on to achieve an outstanding 3-2-3-2, in what is only his first season of cricket! The wickets continued to come thick and fast, with five in the opening eight overs at the cost of only fourteen runs. A commanding lead meant that all bowlers could get in on the action; in total ten bowlers tested their arm, achieving a total of seven maiden overs all told. The match was completed with two of the 5th XI bowlers completing their four-over spell, letting off just five runs between them, an excellent contribution. Bourneside finished with 38 for six. Looking at the figures, you would not be able to tell which team the U12s regularly played for. There was some great fielding and the tempo was upbeat throughout, the captain led the side with enthusiasm and positivity, the players really fed off his constructive attitude. As ever, there are a few points to work on; a few batsmen could have afforded some extra balls to play themselves in and after hitting a good shot need to keep their heads, whereas in the field a bit of catching practice may be required. However, this shouldn’t take away from a deserved team victory from an eclectic mix of cricketers. Mr R. D. W. Baird U12B Coach
