Headmaster's Blog
Dear Parents And so we arrive at the second exeat of the term and everyone takes a deep breath before the run up to the Festive Season. Although it sounds trite, schools are magical places at this time of the year, especially if the school community takes the time to remember that all are tired and busy and it is genuinely the time for ‘goodwill to all men’. I do hope that you will be able to join us for the traditional events which characterise the end of the Autumn Term. Most are featured in the Calendar and this will be complemented by an end of term bulletin sheet which will be available immediately after the exeat. My congratulations to Year 6 who completed their tests for College during the week. Conducted in an atmosphere of support and a desire to see children succeed, these tests are an important snapshot of a child’s attainment thus far, taken in the context of the move to College. This term I have offered to meet with all parents of children in Year 5 to discuss their choice of senior schools and I would like to extend this invitation to those in any year group, who would like specifically to discuss what the tests in Year 6 actually entail. Unsurprisingly, this being The Prep, many of those in Year 6 were involved in the successful performance of Julius Caesar at the Shakespeare Schools Festival and then could be found playing sport against a range of opposition on Wednesday. As promised, after assembly on Monday I did ‘discuss’ with some children the need to ‘add more strings to their bows’ rather than remaining a ‘one trick pony’. There are too many diverse opportunities here to be ignored and involvement in such activities offers that essential balance to demands of work.

Kingfishers Update
Last Friday at 14.45 Kingfishers was abuzz with excited children waiting for the arrival of their mummies and daddies who were invited to our Open Afternoon. Drawers had been tidied, mistakes corrected and books neatly placed in order, all ready for the children to proudly present their work to their parents. Our boys and girls loved showing their parents their display work and talked at length through each page of every workbook! Mr and Mrs Simpson, Mrs Jevons and Mme Amiry were also on hand and were delighted to talk about their subjects in Kingfishers over a cup of tea and some delicious snacks. Well done to our Kingfishers for representing themselves so well and thank you to all of our parents for supporting our event.
The children in the Nursery have had a busy week investigating the ways in which toys work. They have also been very busy making their own toys using junk modelling materials. They made: a toy train, their own pull along toys, talking telephone, giant Jack-inthe Box (a lot of fun was had with each child having the chance to jump out of the box!) and a catch a ball in a cup (or not as this proved quite tricky for little hands but they had a very good go at it!).

Life as a Prefect and Library Monitor Life as a Prefect is no different to everyday school life except that teachers have a little more trust in you and rely on you more for extra jobs. These could be supervising the little ones or making sure new people are settling in well. Also, the younger ones really look up to you and ask for advice such as what to do with friendship problems.
Life in U pper School
Personally, I love being a Prefect and Library Monitor because I love to help people and doing my duties enable me to do that. My Prefect duty is on a Monday lunch and I have to make sure everyone is behaving in the Dining Hall and Library. However my Library Monitor duties are more flexible, I go either when Mrs Carson needs us or when she is not in the Library. I also put books away, dress them and sign them in on the system. What I love most about having these positions of responsibility (Prefect in particular) is that you don’t have to be perfect but just kind, caring and helpful towards the school and everyone in it. Ruby Coull, 8P
8P have been improving and practising their presentation skills this term by running a weekly 'Show and Tell'. Angus Wragg has told us all about his coin collection, Jasper Brumpton has informed us about the highs and lows of training his horse, Ruby Coull has spoken of her Harry Potter fascination by leading a class quiz and Eva de Quincey Adams has shared her favourite parlour game, 'Guess the Object'. This week Alice Bradley illustrated her love of baking and designing by giving members of the class the opportunity to design their own cupcakes.

Lower School Update Egyptian Day Transported back in time, the Year 3s arrived in the capital city of Ancient Egypt, Memphis. After being placed into one of four god groups – Thoth, Isis, Ra or Sekhemet, they undertook a variety of tasks. One group became bakers and made rolls to a specific Egyptian recipe, with a hummus dip, which both children and parents tasted at the end of the day. They all made a bookmark using real papyrus and with their name written in hieroglyphs. Death masks in the style of Tutankhamun were next on the task list and finally they learnt how to wrap a mummy up. Throughout the day they also had to carry out independent research on the various tasks and record it in their history books. The children really enjoyed dressing up and discovering history through a different approach.
Year 4 Science The Year 4 pupils are now learning about friction as their new Science topic, which is proving to be a lot of fun. This week they have been assisting Usain Bolt to design a new pair of trainers. A thorough fair test was planning and jobs were distributed among each group. Using the Newton-Metres, the pupils have been measuring the force it takes to move the shoes along a carpet. Each shoe was measuring four times and an average was taken to determined which shoe had the best grip in 4T. If you would like to find out the results, feel free to visit one of the Year 4 classrooms to see the science posters on display.

Boarding House Update We enjoyed a relaxed weekend with the Boarders after another busy week. Saturday afternoon saw some slightly wet trips to Bath Road, origami crafts as well as some rugby watching and board games. Sunday afternoon saw the inaugural 'Taskmaster' challenge. Boarders were divided into teams and set a series of tasks that they had to complete using teamwork, ingenuity and creative thinking. The Tasks were captured on film, we collected an amazing array of ideas and enthusiasm as well as being impressed by the leadership shown by some of the Year 8s. The footage will be judged by the 'Taskmaster' and teams ranked for each challenge, based on both their completion of the Task and they way in which it was performed. The video clips will be edited together to form the entertainment at the Boarders Christmas Feast, along with a final 'Live Task' to determine which team is victorious. Thank you very much to the Gap Students and other staff involved who helped make it all run smoothly, as well as to our 'mystery guest' who appeared in one of the tasks. We very much look forward to showing all the tasks and the crazy ideas the teams came up with to complete them, it is certainly going to be entertaining! I am especially looking forward to watching the 'Videos that look good when played backwards!' as well as how teams managed to 'Get a tea bag into a cup from the furthest distance!

Joanna Grochowicz visited The Prep on Monday to deliver an engaging and interactive talk to Year 7 and 8 pupils about her recently-published book Into The White, which recounts Scott's thrilling Terra Nova Antarctic expedition.

With Dr Edward Wilson, an Old Cheltonian, being one of the 'final five' who made the memorable, ill-fated trip to the South Pole in 1912, both the book and the presentation had a personal relevance for us as a school. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the thrilling story of Scott's epic journey, and also the chance to dress up as characters from the expedition. They also posed some insightful questions to Joanna and learned about what the expedition involved. We look forward to welcoming Joanna Grochowicz back to The Prep next academic year.
We have now commenced the new and much anticipated Electric Karting Club with the Year 6 boys and girls. They have taken on the practical build with much enthusiasm, displaying great teamwork. Here are some pictures of them starting to assemble the kart. Keep your eyes peeled in Prep for The Week for more photos as the karts continue to take shape!

The team played really well today, showing that they could communicate and play as a team - this made all the difference. Girls were making good passes into spaces, thinking about the where to use on the pitch and now they just need to make sure others are positioned well to receive these balls every time. Well done.

s Team of the week - U9A
The U9 rugby team have been enjoying a very successful term and this week saw them take their winning ways to St Hugh's. The Cheltenham boys started the game fiercely with some very strong tackling and even stronger running. It was great to see the ball being moved wide in each phase and the opposition defensive line being penetrated. At half time the score was 20 - 0 to Cheltenham Prep. They repeated their good start in the second half, forcing errors and turning over the ball. The boys were relentless in attack and a solid team performance meant that a victory was on the cards. A couple of mistakes allowed St Hugh's into the game, but Cheltenham Prep ended victorious with a 40 - 10 win. This score didn’t reflect the good defence and hardworking attitude of the opposition. It was a game played in excellent spirit, which all of the boys should be proud of. With two games to go, the U9 team will look to continue their form to complete an already successful season. Well done to all the boys involved.
