Headmaster's Blog
Dear Parents This Saturday we host our Autumn Open Morning, a day on which we ask the children to present the school to prospective parents. The fact that the children gain something from their involvement is key as the ability to present oneself effectively is an important life skill. For those in Year 6 and Year 7, playing a full role in this event is also the beginning of the application process for a position of responsibility. Does this mean that by turning up and acting as a guide one is guaranteed success in this process? Of course not. However, by retreating from the challenge, one does not do oneself any favours but I know that our pupils will do us, and themselves, proud on the day. Returning from the IAPS conference, it is clear that the accepted view is that ‘customer service’ is an essential aspect of parents’ experiences in the independent sector, justifying the hard work we put into our own service to parents. Whilst problems will inevitably arise from time-to-time, we pride ourselves on conducting our business in a respectful and professional manner.

THRIVE! The Prep’s new Thrive! initiative has got off to an exciting start this term. As we have overhauled our former PSHE topics, we have looked to involve staff from all parts of school, who will share their expertise with our pupils. This week, Rachel Melville-Thomas and Belinda West from our Pupil Support Services came to talk to Year 5 about the different types of anxiety and stress to which we are all prone, how these manifest themselves and a range of approaches to help deal with them. Across the school, we will be placing a real emphasis on supporting our pupils to make good choices in an increasing complex society and staying mentally heathy.

Kingfishers SUPER SKILLS SQUAD STICKERS One of the exciting new initiatives this year is the introduction of the Super Skills Squad. The children have learnt about the six different characters and their qualities. The squad are: Ella the Empathetic Elephant, Charlie the Challenging Cheetah , Poppy the Persevering Pony, Billy the Bounce Back Bunny, Catherine the Creative Cat and Peter the Participating Penguin. The first very special Super Skills Squad stickers were awarded this morning to three delighted children.
MAKING SHAPES In Mathematics, Reception have been naming shapes and then describing their properties. They then had lots of fun trying to make pictures using shapes. Can you tell what they have made?
BAKING BREAD As part of their topic of ‘Food Glorious Food’ the children in Reception have been making bread. They read the story ofThe Little Red Hen and then set to work mixing ingredients, kneading the dough and then shaping it into a round roll shape.

Lower School CREATIVE WRITING
We have had another busy week in Lower School and the children have been working hard! The focus in this week’s edition is Creative Writing. We have been teaching the children about story openings and learning to HOOK the reader in! We have learned about different types, ranging from speech and action openings, to descriptions of the setting and the characters. Our children have been inspired to write, using both videos and pictures to encourage imaginative description. To find out more about our teaching and learning you could come to our “How we teach” evening. Part of Year 4 English is to begin learning more deeply about text, analysing and reflecting upon our writing. This way, the children learn to assess and challenge themselves, taking more control of their learning. Plus, they are loving using their highlighters! Have a look at some of their amazing work! We are keen to celebrate and share it with you!
COOKING AND NUTRTION Year 4 Enrichment lessons have seen 4T finding out about food. To begin with the class found out facts about bread from around the world and varieties of soup. This led to the excitement of tasting soup and bread last week to help generate ideas for recipes. This week, the pupils have been learning about what yeast does through a fin experiment, before creating their own bread recipes and making their very own batch soon. Mrs Seamark has been working very hard to bring the topic to life and the children are learning an incredible amount about.

Peer mentoring, looking after our community and doing our bit for the Prep Award Scheme This week in our Section Assembly we were joined by Peer Mentors Josh Yang, Imogen Mansell-King and Ben Cunningham. Peer mentors are Year 8 pupils who have undergone training so that they can help support pupils with friendships, school life or listen to any other worries that younger pupils may have. Pupils will know who they are because they wear a special yellow badge on their blazer. Josh, Imogen and Ben have also agreed to come and be reading buddies with Year 5 on Wednesdays. This week, Mr Bass' history classes have

Beep Beep! Kingfishers enjoyed a fantastic road safety day on Wednesday. They were really excited to meet Dan and Lynda the two police officers. Each year group spent time with them, listening to their advice and learning the best way to stay safe while riding bikes or crossing the road. Other activities included a traffic survey on the Bath Road, baking traffic light biscuits, looking at the cars in the car park to find out which colour was the most popular and learning to cross the road while our friends pretended to drive past. Every child received a special Cheltenham Prep reflective teddy keyring. Stay safe out there everyone and remember ‘stop, look and listen’!

MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL On Thursday two troupes of actors ventured to Tewkesbury to undertake workshops in preparation for their Shakespeare Schools Festival performances in November. The Year 6 cast of Julius Caesar had the morning workshop and were joined on the stage by a primary school from Worcester. They worked together on various activities and drama skills focusing on voice projection, stage presence and awareness of others around them. The Caesar cast then experienced the nerves of performing a short extract from the play in front of a small, but critical, audience. Afterwards they had an individual tutorial from one of the leaders, focusing this time on ensemble work. The difference between the cast at the beginning of the workshop and the end was amazing and you could see their confidence grow. Pupils contributed to their own direction and were praised for their quick learning and enthusiasm. The Year 8 cast of Romeo and Juliet followed in the afternoon with a Year 10 class from Wycliffe School. The workshop followed a similar outline but was geared for older pupils and the Romeo and Juliet cast worked with the leader to produce a stunning beginning to the show, building upon what we had already created during school rehearsals. If you would like to see either cast perform, tickets are available from the box office (01684 295074) at the Roses Theatre for Thursday 16 November. The Prep are performing alongside two other schools and the plays are only half an hour each – just long enough to get a flavour of the great playwright. We hope to see you there.

NATIONAL POETRY DAY LOVELY FOOD HOMOPHONES Mum ordered pea soup, While dad went for a pee. It was a chilly winter night, But perfect for eating chilli. With a leak in the boat, We hopped off for leek for lunch. We moved to the dessert, To finish out desert. Hattie Lait & Ava-Grace Buckley-Browne
The country spent Thursday 28 September celebrating National Poetry Day, so Year 4 and much of the school joined in. The theme for this year was ‘Freedom’ and the pupils focused on writing free verse poetry following the topic of spelling homophones. We had great fun finding homophones, making silly sentences and then constructing some poems to be read aloud. These are just a few of the poems that were written on the day.... OPPOSITE HOMOPHONES My friend and I are a pear. Why can’t the air bee bear? O deer, the stag and dear aren’t aware. I wish I could die my hare. I flew to France and suffered from the flew. A bald man bawled, In the corner of an aisle on the isle. He was bored of playing on his hover board. After he ate a few wee bairns, He washed it down with eight glasses o’ wine. He climbed the stair, to stare at a laddie in a kilt, Getting annoyed when the clothes started to close. Next, he ate a lassie in a roll, Who was just auditioning for the film star role. Team of the week... U11A This week the U11As took on The Dragon at home. Following some hard work put in on the training pitch, the girls put in a determined and consistent performance to come away with a 7-0 win. It was a well fought battle in the middle of the pitch for much of the match, however, when the girls came together as a team and put in a few lovely passages of play up the right hand side, the crosses started to come in and players were on hand in the D to beat the keeper. Our defence responded really well to any of the challenges by The Dragon, constantly clearing their lines with hard, direct hits up the field. A good and positive match by the girls.

GB Hockey Coaching Day 12 girls from the 1st and 2nd squads were lucky enough to spend the day being coached by Olympic gold medalists and Great Britain players Kate Richardson Walsh and Helen Richardson Walsh. This was part of the MT13 Junior Annual Junior Conference held at Millfield School this week. The girls were put through their paces by a number of international players and coaches, working on technical skills and tactical plays. And of course there was time built in at the end for autographs and stick signings. It was a fantastic and very motivating experience for our girls. 10

BOYS' SPORT Featured team of the week...
U9
The excitement was building as we took the well worn road to Beaudesert Park school for the U9 rugby festival. All three teams were prepped and ready after an excellent week of training and expectations were high. The focus here is on the fantastic success of the U9 B team who managed to win all three of their matches. The first match was to be played against a strong and well fancied Home team from Beaudesert. After a slightly slow start, where both teams made some handling errors, the strength of The Prep boys defence became the clear difference between the teams. Our rock solid, defensive pressing pushed the Beaudesert boys back over their own try line twice. A few excellent runs and offloads then opened the gap in the score line which ultimately finished 6 tries to nil. An exceptional start. Our second match was against local rivals Dean Close. The Prep boys were superb from the outset and again put the Dean Close boys under considerable pressure through our defence. This began to cause Dean Close to make errors, of which our speedy runners took full advantage of. The boys then started to show some excellent attacking flair, stepping out of tackles and offloading brilliantly to rack up the scores. The physicality and commitment from our boys led to a convincing victory 11 tries to nil. Our final match was against a rather pumped up Downs Wraxall side. The attitudes of our boys in the face of a physical Downs team was absolutely fantastic. The boys thoroughly outplayed the opposition, with some thundering tackles to match our skilful offloading game. It was a pleasure to watch as the Cheltenham boys managed to win 7 tries to nil. A great day was had by all and we were all impressed by the skill, attitude and commitment of our boys. Well done!
