Lower School News Kindness Pupils in Lower school enjoyed a variety of mindful experiences this week. Within the theme of kindness, our pupils tried a variety of yoga, massage and well-being exercises. Pupils were encouraged to think about how good it felt to be kind and to receive kindness from others. Everyone enjoyed the positive affirmations they received and loved the feeling of relaxation and calm that they achieved.

Boys’ Sport Update Scotland Rugby Tour 2018 Over the half term break 29 boys from Year 7 and Year 8 headed up to Scotland for our bi-annual Upper School Sports Tour. The U13s won 3/3 matches and the U12s won 2/3, being superbly hosted by Portobello Rugby Club. The boys also visited Edinburgh Castle, went bowling, to the cinema and attended the Edinburgh v Toulon fixture. The highlight of the tour may have been the huge amount of Irn Bru drunk by the Cheltenham tourists !

The Davies Cup Thursday night saw the first presentation of the Davies Cup. WPC Davies was an England and British Lions centre, who was Headmaster of our school from 1964-1986 and President of Cheltenham Rugby Club from 1972-1985. Sadly he passed away earlier this year, so what better way to celebrate his life than with his old school playing at his old club? Cheltenham Rugby Club have a stunning new floodlit 4G pitch which we used for the game and we had ex-international referee Chris White blowing the whistle. Beaudesert School were the opponents and helped to make it a great occasion for Mr Davies’ family, who attended the game and presented the cup. Cheltenham played a strong flowing game, looking to punch it up to narrow the Beaudesert defence and then swinging it wide to exploit the space that had been created. The boys played superbly and ran out 25-5 victors with the Davies Cup coming back to Cheltenham, but we look forward to this event being celebrated annually.

Girls’ Sport Update

Girls’ Hockey Results 1st VII vs St John’s

U13 IAPS

Drew 3-3 2nd VII vs The Dragon

There was heartbreak for the 1st VII at the regional IAPS tournament held at Millfield on the first day back after Half Term. After an unbeaten season so far, hopes were high that this could be our first U13 team to make the Nationals, and they couldn’t have started better. They topped the group stages with a 2-0 win over Taunton, 1-0 win over Kings Hall, 3-0 win over Salisbury Cathedral, 0-0 draw against Beaudesert, and only the one loss of 0-1 to The Downs. This took them into the quarter finals versus a strong Sherborne team. Unfortunately, the 12 minute games just weren’t quite long enough, and we were punished for the few minutes it took us to settle into the higher paced, higher intensity game. We lost an early goal and despite a strong second half comeback, it wasn’t quite enough and the game ended as a 2-3 loss. With 24 teams entered at Millfield, one of the biggest regional events, the top 4 qualified for Nationals, and so to come so close and just miss out was very tough for the girls to take, but they did themselves proud and should feel very positive about the rest of the season. This is certainly a team to watch.

Lost 0-1 3rd VII vs St John’s Won 2-0 4th VII vs The Dragon Won 2-0 5th VII vs St John’s Won 1-0 U11A vs St John’s Won 8-0 U11B vs St John’s Lost 3-4 U10A vs Pinewood Lost 0-3

Holland Hockey Tour At the start of October Half Term, 26 Year 7 and Year 8 girls had a nice early start, a coach journey and a ferry crossing to get them to Holland – the Hockey capital of the world. They had five days jam packed with hockey where they were treated to three training sessions led by coaches from Rotterdam hockey club, played two competitive matches against Dutch clubs HC Capelle and HC Rotterdam, and watched a professional women’s fixture. It was quite an experience for them, and hugely inspiring. In addition to all the hockey, they also managed to fit in a fun filled day at the theme park, some ten pin bowling and a game of glow golf. This is the third trip of its kind to run, and it proved just as successful as the others, if not even more so. The girls were a delight and a credit to the school, and they got a huge amount out of the tour. We are looking forward to seeing them show off their new skills this half of term.

Art News

House Art

‘Water’ was the title this year and The Prep pupils excelled themselves once again! There were an incredible 119 entries, well done to everyone who took part! The variety of mediums, from paint and pencil to driftwood and fabric were exceptional. The compositions were both original and creative and Mrs Parsley had a lovely time receiving and hanging the Art. Please do come and have a look, the exhibition is in The House Corridor! The winners will be announced in Assembly on Monday.

Art Workshop

On Wednesday, St John’s Primary invited 10 of our Middle School pupils to attend a workshop with celebrated illustrator and Author Tony De Saulles. Tony is famous for illustrating ‘The Horrible Science’ books as well many other children’s fun Natural History and fictional books. He talked about how he invents and draws his characters. He demonstrated and we copied. He even sang to the pupils about the importance of Bees. It was a lively, creative event which really gave us an insight into how illustration and storytelling make perfect creative partners.

And finally... Dear Parents In many ways this has been a week, and will be a weekend, of contemplation and gratitude as we all commemorate 100 years since the Armistice. We, in The Prep, remembered those 702 brave young men from Cheltenham College who made the ultimate sacrifice in our remembrance service this afternoon. As a wider school community, we will also be holding a service on Sunday, which you are all very welcome to attend, next to the new permanent memorial to commemorate the 702. The Prep has also created its own 702 memorial in the form of giant numbers which have black and white pictures of OCs and OJs who fell in the Great War alongside red poppies. This will sit outside Thirlestaine House over the weekend, before finding a more permanent home in The Prep. I would also like to thank Rageh Omaar, an OC and longtime BBC and ITN foreign affairs correspondent, for speaking incredibly movingly about his experiences at the Cheltonian Society’s Dinner at the Imperial War Museum last night to commemorate 3the centenary of the end of World War One. Another very significant event yesterday was the inaugural Davies Cup game held between The Prep and

In a great many ways, he leaves very big boots for me to try and fill. I am grateful to all parents for your response to my last message. The atmosphere on the touchlines this week has been first class and all of the children have enjoyed their sport enormously as a result. WPC would approve! Finally, I am sad to announce that Stacy Ramsay will be leaving us at the end of this term to take up the post of Head of Junior Sport at Oxford High School. Whilst we are disappointed to be losing her, we wish her well on her promotion and know that she will do an outstanding job, as she has done here. Her care and support has been of great benefit to so many of our pupils over recent years. I hope to see many of you on Sunday.

Beaudesert Park School at Cheltenham Rugby Club last night. The Davies Cup celebrates the life of W P C (Phil) Davies, who ran (what was then) Cheltenham College Junior School from 1964 to 1986, following a hugely successful rugby career culminating in selection for the British and Irish Lions in 1955.
