Kingfishers Update S’more fun in the Nursery

The nursery children had lots of fun making s’mores in Forest School this week. They watched Mrs Westgate build the fire, discussing fire safety. The children each had a turn roasting a marshmallow on a whittled stick and then put it between two biscuits to make a s’more! We finished our Forest School session with some hot chocolate.

Reception & Ravana The children in the Reception class have been learning all about Diwali this week as part of their ‘Festivals and Celebrations’ topic. They have been making Diva lamps and drawing what they think Ravana the ten headed king might look like.

Saint John’s Forest Fun This week we welcomed Saint John’s reception class for a Forest school session. We had lots of fun discussing making our own forest school stick men using sticks ropes and clay! The children enjoyed exploring our area, learning how to tie knots and a drink and snack around the base camp. We cannot wait to meet again for next week’s session.

Year 2 Freeze Frame This week Year 2 have been acting out the story of ‘Lost and Found’. They performed some fantastic ‘freeze frame’ drama and all worked collaboratively. They considered how the characters were feeling, the importance of exaggerated movements and mime.

Lower School News Forest School Activities in Lower School This week, Year 3 have been exploring how important empathy is when learning and working with others. They have been focussing in particular on how to listen to each other and compromise where necessary.

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

These skills were put to good use when playing the game “Wizards, goblins and elves” as the children had to work as a team to collect as many life tokens from the opposing team as possible. To do this, tactics had to be employed and the children had to follow rules in order to play fairly. Everyone enjoyed playing the game and the battle was closely fought with the result being really close. It was great to see everyone talking and listening to each other and having fun. Another task saw the children searching the Lower School environs for as many different leaves as possible. These were then collected and displayed and will be used to help children identify our trees. In our next session we will use the internet to research the leaves and name the different trees and then develop our own identification key. REMINDER: Team photos will be taken on Monday 19th November and children will need to look smart in their games kit.

Learning a new language! Form 3S are learning a bunch of different South African related words. They have a weekly “Star of “Ja”” and use the words to great effect! It’s a bit of fun but ... do you know what these words mean: lekker, ja, sjoe, trek, totsiens, muti? They’re moving onto a few Afrikaans and Zulu words like “hamba” and “lelik”. What score did you get out of 8?

Boys’ Sport Update This week it was simply too difficult to nominate one team for this award. Last week was one of the best rugby days in the school’s history. Ignoring the outstanding set of results, every pitch saw fantastic spectacles of rugby. Beaudesert were worthy opponents and refused to take a backward step all morning. Every game was a battle, with the Cheltenham boys demonstrating passion, determination and more than a little skill. You just know that when the boys, the parents and, best of all, the staff have big grins on their faces, that it has been a special day for the school.

Boys’ Rugby Results U13A vs Beaudesert Won 25-5 U13B vs Beaudesert Lost 0-35 U12A vs Beaudesert Won 20-10 U12B vs Beaudesert Won 10-5 U11A vs Beaudesert Won 30-25 U11B vs Beaudesert Drew 25-25 U10A vs Beaudesert Won 15-10 U10B vs Beaudesert Won 30-15 U10C vs Beaudesert Won 35-20 U9A vs Beaudesert Won 50-40 U9B vs Beaudesert Won 20-15 U13A vs Abberley Hall Won 25-15 U12A vs Abberley Hall Won 30-10 U12B vs Abberley Hall Won 50-10 U11A vs Abberley Hall Lost 15-45 U11B vs Abberley Hall Won 30-25 U10A vs Abberley Hall Won 40-20

Cross-Country Update Last Friday we took a number of children to run in the District Cross Country races at St. Edwards. Challenged with running up the infamous hill, not once but sometimes twice, they all performed fantastically well. They were particularly impressive considering many of them have been involved in very busy weeks…IAPS hockey, mock scholarship exams, matches on Wednesday and the rugby match on Thursday evening! There were over a hundred runners in each race and particular mention should go to the following who have now all been selected to run in the County Championship race on Saturday 1 December – a tremendous achievement. Isla- Rose Elliman (3rd in Y7 Girls) Max Callon Hine (6th in Y7 Boys) Ed Carter (11th in Y8/Y9 Boys)

Sporting Success Congratulations to Ed C and Harry M who over Half Term were selected for the Gloucestershire Hockey Association U14s Academy Squad, a fantastic achievement!

Boarding House News A great weekend in the Boarding House. The usual crafts, games, lego, football, designing Christmas Feast invitations, watching international rugby etc. Some pupils chose to attend the Remembrance Service on Sunday outside Chapel. Thanks to Mr Newson and the Gaps for the Sunday afternoon trip to Oasis, the Boarders had a wonderful time on the sides and in the wave pool. We are all excited about our Taskmaster challenge on Sunday afternoon.

History News Year 8 History

Sometimes you just got to hand it over to the professionals! George and Ronan from year 8 leading an analysis of the battle of Hastings. A great example of BLP, well done boys!

History Quizzing

Twice a week Upper School pupils voluntarily meet to enjoy some History Quizzing in preparation for the TownsendWarner History Prize! On Thursday 15 November during Lunch Break, around 20 pupils were given a quiz created by ‘Prep History Royalty’! College 3rd Formers, Harry D and William H, who finished 102nd and 60th respectively in last year’s TownsendWarner History Prize, put together a thoroughly enjoyable test of knowledge which really stretched those present. My thanks to them both for giving up their time.

And finally... Dear Parents Sometimes I have to spend a few minutes on a Friday thinking about the best and most appropriate topic to write about for this piece. This is definitely not one of those weeks! For all of you lucky enough to attend the Shakespeare Schools Festival at the Roses Theatre last night you will know why! The two plays (Henry V and The Tempest) performed by our children simply blew me away. They were fantastic and showed off everything that is good about our wonderful school. The teamwork, the dedication, the sense of joie de vivre and the outstanding talent were all very much in evidence. As a Head sitting watching it made me immensely proud and every single one of the children involved should be too. It was a brilliant evening and we should all be thanking Jill Douglas, Debs Anderes, Rick Webber, Kit Perona-Wright and their extended team of support for all of their super human efforts which allowed the children to showcase their talents on Thursday evening! If you missed it I would highly recommend that you come and watch it on Friday, 23 November at 1500 in the Assembly Hall. Have a great weekend!
