Lower School News India Day Year 4 have been learning about the culture and country of India this term, so to bring the topic together we celebrated ‘India Day’ this week. The pupils learnt about housing in India and created some wonderful art. This was followed by creating real Rangoli Art patterns with Indian spices and dried foods, which look amazing. The final activity of the morning was to dress in traditional Indian clothing and make photo frames to display the photos. The frames were decorated with traditional Indian patterns.

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

The afternoon was spent decorating a classroom, transforming it into an Indian banquet room. The children enjoyed a whole range of Indian snacks, curries and other traditional foods. It was a very enjoyable day and brings the fascinating topic to an end.

Boys’ Sport Update Team of the Week - The Barbarians Xs The U13B squad came into the tournament on the back of a long term of rugby. Despite some excellent individual performances during some of their fixtures, the boys had rarely performed well as a team, and had yet to record a victory in any of their matches since September. On a wet and windy Wednesday afternoon in Cheltenham, all that changed. The Prep found themselves in a potentially challenging pool group with both Wycliffe and The Elms, but in the opening game against the latter, found themselves ahead after just a few seconds. It was the first time the U13Bs had led any match all term. The early try served to unite the team and give them belief, and they went on to win the opening match convincingly, playing some flowing, attacking rugby in the process. The second of the group games was an equally one-sided affair, as Wycliffe were dispatched in much the same vain. With confidence spreading across the team, the boys then went straight into their third game against Abingdon, and even though we conceded their first, and only, try of the afternoon, their opponents had no answer to a rejuvenated home side as they sealed their third win. However, sterner tests were to follow. Having made it into the Cup competition for the first time in five years, rather than the Shield or the Bowl, The Prep found that Clifton offered more resistance, but with tries coming from a range of players and positions, the U13Bs’ new-found belief meant they were now looking to dominate and win matches, rather than simply avoid defeat. At the other end, a defence which had been so porous in previous fixtures, now were defending resolutely as a unit. A 2-0 victory put them in a strong position heading into the final game against Dean Close. However, such was the confidence and belief coursing through the team, you could see they felt this was their day, and two unanswered tries, allied to some more strong defending, saw Cheltenham Prep prevail and win the Barbarians Xs Cup . The U13Bs have been on the wrong end of results for much of this term. However, on this occasion, their last chance to pull on the Cheltenham Prep rugby shirt for a fixture, the boys played some superb rugby, and for the first time this term, truly played as a team. Mr Williams and Mr Clarke would like to praise all the boys in the squad for their efforts not just on the day, but throughout the term, and for proving that perseverance does pay off, in the end.

And finally... Dear Parents This afternoon we marked the beginning of many festive events at The Prep as Lower, Middle and Upper School assembled in Chapel for our advent service. After a wonderful service led by Father Dunning I left Chapel with a feeling of positive anticipation about the month to come. Life at The Prep is unique all year around, but December is different again. The rising excitement of pupils (and staff too!) about December 25th, as well as events such as Nativities, carol singing and Christmas coffee mornings make this month particularly special. Today many parents attended chapel for the advent service and I urge you to join us at as many of the forthcoming Christmas events as you can. (You will find notices for many of them throughout Prep For The Week). It is not only a chance for you to see your own wonderful children ‘in action’ but also to be a part of our Prep community. It’s your presence and support that helps to make our community what it is – I look forward to seeing many of you there. With best wishes for the festive season ahead.
