Kingfishers Update Forest School This week we were unable to venture up into Forest school as hurricane Florence was causing some high winds in Cheltenham making a Forest School session unsafe. We didn’t let that stop us having fun. As Autumn approaches, the conkers are beginning to fall. We decided that we would use the biggest conkers to thread onto string for a conker competition.

The Grand Old Duke of York The Nursery children have been thinking about the rhyme The Grand Old Duke of York. We watched a video of Trooping the Colour and marvelled at the amazing marching soldiers. We made our own Beefeater hats and decorated them. We created our own musical marching band and went parading around the school singing our rhyme of the week over and over. It was very windy and our hats were blown everywhere, it was funny!

Kingfishers Update Reception Fun Reception have had a noisy week. They enjoyed pretending to be in the Grand Old Duke of York’s marching band using real instruments and then making their own.

Year 2 Drama Year 2 enjoyed finding out about some of the different jobs people would have had in the 17th Century as part of their ‘Fire! Fire!’ topic. They acted some of the jobs out for the rest of the class to guess! Can you spot the Spinster and her spinning wheel or the Chimney Sweep with the child on hand ready to help?

The BFG Roald Dahl day 2018 was celebrated last week with fits of laughter and giggles down in Lower School. Our play for this year came from the beloved Roald Dahl book, The BFG, which was enjoyed by all. We would like to say a massive thank you to Scooby and Mr O’Sullivan who together portrayed a fabulous rendition of the BFG alongside Mrs Allen who played the brave and kindhearted Sophie. If you haven’t already, head over to our Facebook Cheltenham Prep page to take a look at a clip of our BFG performance!

Year 6 History Year 6 have been re-enacting the Battle of Bosworth in History class this week with Mr Bass. It was great fun for all apart from poor King Richard III who still found himself without a horse and falling to the sword of Henry Tudor!

Year 6 BLP Year 6 are making the most of all of our resources in English, even the tables! Building Learning Power is well under way! We looked at the poem “I am the Bell and then we personified a range of objects! #creativity

Girls’ Sport Update Team of the Week – 3rd VII

The focus after our first match of the season was to make more of scoring chances; ensuring that the ball was struck first time, as soon as players were in the D. The girls took this objective on board against Pinewood, with their complete focus to drive the ball forward into the D and shoot at every possible opportunity. Our players worked tirelessly in midfield, assisting Karly S to score 2 goals and Ellie M and Bella P to score one each. Pinewood hardly got the ball in the D as our defenders Flo P and Alice W were fearless in breaking down play and clearing the ball wide. The third match against St Hugh’s was more evenly matched, with St Hugh’s having more opportunities to score. Sofiia S was superb as goalie, saving several shots and three balls which came round to the line. Again we drove forward making the most of all opportunities. Karly passed a lovely ball to Millie J, who scored a beautiful lifted goal and Ellie M got the second by following up on a rebound, hit by Maddi G. There are still some areas of stick work that we need to focus on, to improve the technical elements of our game; but the dedication, fitness, teamwork and drive to succeed are already present in abundance. Well done girls on your excellent start.

Boys’ Sport Update Boys’ Rugby Team of the Week – U12As The U12As have had to do some reshuffling after graduating as U11s. The team format has expanded from 9 to 12 aside; furthermore, since several A team players left after Year 6, some boys have had to step up and adjust to the high intensity of an A team game. This will take time to gel. The first problem was that we had a distinct lack of forwards and too many backs! Thanks to the selfless attitude of Archie W and Toby E we were able to build a pack around these experienced boys. Our first trip was to Pinewood last Saturday. Mr Hall and I want the boys to play a system where they attack around the corner going the same way which makes it difficult for the opposition to defend if there is quick ruck ball. Unfortunately, as in many early season games, the pace and rhythm proved to be disjointed. Rucks were taking too long to clear as not enough players committed to clearing the breakdown allowing the opposition defensive line to regroup. However, once the boys reflected on their performance at halftime, they upped their game and were more aggressive and direct. Charlie M led the way at the base of the ruck and found numerous gaps to exploit around the fringe and then started to link up with his support players. The boys sometimes kicked the ball away when they should have gone through the phases but tries did come through better teamwork. Ed C proved his worth as a team player often finding people in space around him due to the fact that three opposition players are often wrapped around him and out of the game.

Boys’ Rugby Results U13A vs Pinewood Won 50-20 U13B vs Pinewood Won 20-0 U12A vs Pinewood Won 30-5 U12B vs Pinewood U13B Lost 5-10 U11A vs Pinewood Won 45-15 U11B vs Pinewood Won 45-20 U13B vs St Hugh’s Won 15-10 U12A vs St Hugh’s Won 35-10 U12B vs St Hugh’s U13B Lost 5-10 The under 8s, 9s, 10s and 11s were all involved in festivals over the last week, however we do not keep scores from festivals as the main focus is the development of the children rather than the short term result.

Lots to do in training – we are making progress. They will develop and are a lovely cohort of boys to train.

And finally... Dear Parents The arrival of the year’s first Exeat is always a welcome event for all. Following the long lazy days of the summer holidays the first three weeks back at school are always a shock to the system for the children and staff alike. A restful weekend to recharge is just what everybody needs. It has been an extremely rewarding, exciting and fun three weeks for me personally. After nine months of waiting it has been fantastic to actually be in situ doing the job. Whilst I can’t claim to know everyone individually just yet the children, as a group, have made a fantastic impression on me. There are going to be very exciting times ahead! Have a fantastic weekend and I very much hope you can join us on Monday for our ‘Meet the Heads’ evening.
