Kingfishers Update The Great Fire of London Year 1 and Year 2 have been learning about the Great Fire of London. They were very excited to visit the bakery to buy their own bread and enjoyed exploring artefacts from 1666.

CBSO fun for all We were very lucky to be visited by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra this week. We all had a fantastic time at the workshops in Lake House and were delighted to watch them perform.

News from the Music Department Our string players had a wonderful time taking part in workshops run by a quartet from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The players have joined us before and led workshops in Lower School but this time it was the Year 1 violinists and Years 5-8 who enjoyed making music with the professional players. Our Year 1s watched and took part in a musical story adventure where they observed the players perform and were able to play different musical instruments to help create different sounds in the story. Our Quartet I received a masterclass from a CBSO Double Bass player and worked very hard on one of their pieces and were able to perform it at the end. Our String Group I and II joined in with various rhythm and listening games and performed together demonstrating excellent teamwork skills. Finally our Lower School String Group relished in the opportunity to perform to the quartet and loved joining in with new and exciting musical activities. Overall, it was a great day in the music department!

What else are we up to?! Monday 1st October- Pupil’s Informal Concert. Friday 5th October- Music recital at a local care home. Friday 12th October- Chamber Choir will be performing in Chapel. Friday 19th October- Junior Choir will be performing in Chapel. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter! @CheltPrepMusic

European Day of Languages On 26 September the whole school was treated to a European lunch. The dining room had many flags to label each of the European dishes. One of our Spanish pupil particularly enjoyed having some chicken and chorizo paella! All the dishes were popular amongst the children and one of the favourites was the Hungarian beef goulash. During MFL lessons, the pupils labelled giant European maps with information they already knew and some that they found out through further research. They shared their findings with the rest of the class. In CTP, all pupils took part in a language song quiz. Ten song extracts were played to them and they had to guess the languages of each song. Well done to all the winners! We were all so impressed with their enthusiasm and their desire to learn more about new cultures and languages.

Girls’ Sport Update Team of the Week – 5th VII

The 5th team took to the astro with now characteristic grit. Catherine W was strong going towards the ball carrier to force errors and Molly R led by example in the middle of the pitch, working tirelessly to bring the ball up field. Poppy W impressed (yet again) with her ability to follow up shots in the D, scoring in her third match in a row. Doris W made the score 2-0 at half time but The Dragon came back after the break, scoring two. Ollie G was superb in goal (having already played for the 3rds) and was ultimately voted player of the match by the opposition. Mia E finished the game with a final goal, having pressed hard for most of the game. What progress this team have made! Some of the team had never held a hockey stick before term started and several felt very anxious and lacked confidence in our first few games lessons. Well done, girls, on your determination and positivity!

Boys’ Sport Update Boys’ Rugby Team of the Week – U13As

Boys’ Rugby Results U13A vs Bredon Academy Won 35-10

After strong wins over Wycliffe (10-5) and Pinewood (50-20), the U13A took the field against a large Bredon Academy side. The game began with two very contrasting styles, Cheltenham playing very wide and Bredon taking the direct approach. Bredon scored two good tries after blockbusting charges by their impressively large inside centre and would have had another without a superb last ditch tackle from Oliver S at full-back, however Cheltenham played their way around the large Bredon pack and worked two good tries to take us to half time at 10-10.

U13B vs Wycliffe

With a clear focus on the basics of ball presentation and straightening up in attack, the boys went to task in the second half and the tries rained in once we tightened up on our basics. Our centres, Tom S and Tom H, doubled up on their 12 and repeatedly stopped him on the gain line with a series of superb double hits. Will M at fly-half constantly pushed the width of our team, stretching their defence to create holes, which were then exposed with wider running from our number 8, Harry M. Special mention to our front five, Olly L, Toby K, Teddy B, Finn K and Fred B, who are being asked to put in huge amounts of work in our very wide game plan and not only managed to run the legs off a far bigger front five, but even knocked them off their own ball in the scrum.

Lost 5-25

This side are proving to be a special group as there is no star player; this means they are a tight group who work hard for each other and are reaping the benefits of this approach. We have some big games on the horizon and I know the boys are up for the challenge.

Year 5 trip to the Wilson Museum Year 5 students went to the Wilson Museum on Thursday morning on a voyage of exploration and discovery. As part of the Geography syllabus, students are learning about extreme climates of the world. So, what better way to learn about polar climates than learning more about the life of Edward Wilson, an Old Cheltonian and one of our town’s most famous sons. Year 5s got into the spirit by dressing in polar explorer clothing, making field sketches of penguins, and looking through some of Wilson’s personal artefacts recovered from the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica... all very informative and exciting!

And finally... Dear Parents After the brief respite of the Exeat weekend, it has been great to see so many of the pupils starting to feel settled in their new routines. All of us have had new beginnings over the last few weeks, many children will have been learning to navigate their way round school from lesson to lesson. Staff have been making fresh starts as well, particularly in embedding Building Learning Power into our planning to challenge and engage each and every child. Change can, of course, be a daunting prospect and building confidence can be a fragile and gradual process. So often it can be the little details that make the big difference in a child’s education and as a school, we are working hard to notice and praise the small successes that each pupil is making, whether it be in class, on the games field or in their activities. Tempting as it might be for us to focus on attainment at this early stage of the year, we really should be asking the simple question “Are you happy?” If the answer is “yes”, the goal of every child fulfilling their potential is so much more likely to come to pass. Should the answer be “no”, we have teams of Tutors, Heads of Section, Heads of Wellbeing and a Deputy Head Pastoral all ready and waiting to help! Do come and talk.

With best wishes, Noll Jenkins Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Designated Safeguarding Lead
