Kingfishers Update Grandparents’ Day On Saturday Kingfishers welcomed their Grandparents in to the classroom to sample life as a Kingfisher. Everyone enjoyed a range of activities including portrait painting and baking cookies. Well done to all of the families that completed the morning quiz and collected their prize from Mrs Buttress.

Little Miss Muffet Reception have really enjoyed exploring the nursery rhyme ‘Little Miss Muffet’ this week. They sat on a tuffet while the spider sat beside them and also made curds and whey. The curds were very popular but the children were not so keen on the whey.

The Queen of Hearts Nursery have been busy learning the first verse of this nursery rhyme. We made our own jam tarts BUT they were stolen by the Knave! Naughty Knave! We also talked about healthy eating and sorted some of Mrs Davis’ shopping into every day foods and treats. The children thought about looking after their bodies and practised brushing their teeth, to help their mouths stay healthy.

Lower School News Wednesday Wow!

Keep up to date

For our Year 3 Wednesday Afternoon Wow, we took our inspiration from the natural sculptures of Andrew Goldsworthy and created sculptures worthy of gold in the Lower School playground.

Tree Sculptures Lower School created wonderful tree sculptures with clay. Imaginations ran wild as we thought about what the face of the tree might be like. Using natural objects from around the playground all sorts of friendly faces emerged from the bark.

Literature Festival Lower School were delighted to attend the first event of this year’s Literature Festival. Pamela Butchart entertained everyone with her witty observations and colourful, fun clothes. Pamela is a Scottish children’s author and high school philosophy teacher and ... she really understands children. With book titles like “Baby Aliens got my Teacher” and “The Attack of the Demon Dinner Ladies”, everyone left with the feeling that they desperately wanted to read all 20 of her amazingly funny, entertaining novels. Year 6 were also taken to see MG Leonard at the Literature Fest this morning. She kindly agreed to sign Lily’s book before the event started and a great time was had by all.

Eggcellent Geography Year 7 Geography students have been busy discovering how the humble egg can help save lives in an earthquake. After studying two different examples of earthquakes in class, their challenge was to team up and design and build ‘earthquakeproof’ structures using nothing but paper, paper clips, rubber bands and drinking straws. The students had to use teamwork and creativity to see whether their designs would protect the egg in an ‘earthquake simulator’ (Mr Newson shaking the desk for 10 seconds!). The testing promises to be both interesting and ‘eggciting’...

And finally... Dear Parents One of the great joys of Prep School is that the children can be involved in so many different things. You can be goal attack in the netball team whilst singing in the Chapel Choir, treading the boards in a school show, studying for an art scholarship, playing in the chess team, being a school council member and a million other things too - and, of course, working hard! It is so important that children of prep school age don’t have to give things up to specialise in only one area. This allows the children to try everything, find what they are brilliant at, but also enjoy everything else, regardless of ability. It does also make the children very busy. I’m sure that by the end of next week your children will be shattered and will all make the most of the half term break. We work really hard as a school, first and foremost through the tutors, to manage your children’s workload and their time. Most important of all is to ensure they have ‘free time’ - time to play with friends and to be children. This generally works well although we do know we deliver you tired children at the end of each busy week. If you ever have concerns about how your child is managing, then their Form Tutor should always be the first port of call. Building up strong relationships with your children’s Form Tutors is at the heart of ensuring that they make the most of all the opportunities available to them, have a suitable balance of work, play and rest, and, ultimately, have a brilliant year. Enjoy the weekend, I was going to build a log cabin in the garden on Sunday, but looking out of the window, it looks more like it might be jumpers and cocoa!
