Kingfishers Update

Celebrating Chinese New Year â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gong hei fat choyâ&#x20AC;?. Everyone has had lots of fun celebrating Chinese New Year and discovering the stories and traditions. It is the year of the Rat, which Chinese zodiac are you?

Outside Area The children had a brilliant time exploring the outside learning area. They went on an ice hunt and then investigated what happened to the ice.

Lower School News Wellbeing Wellbeing sessions are currently about learning to be resilient â&#x20AC;&#x201C; having the ability to bounce back and try again. We have been discussing what we can do to help ourselves and how it makes us feel when we become resilient. We first calm our minds through breathing using feathers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with each exhale we imagine sparking resilience within us. During yoga the children learn focus, strength and determination whilst carefully challenging themselves with each pose. Feelings of calmness, positivity and confidence are shared through massage, before finishing with a relaxing meditation.

Boarding House Update On Sunday afternoon the Boarders enjoyed a trip to the Warehouse Climbing Centre. They had a rotation of three different activities; climbing on the big walls, caving and bouldering. Everyone seemed to enjoy the active afternoon, especially the milkshakes at the end! Thank you to Mrs Jones and Mr Yiend as well as the Gaps for leading and taking part in the activity. We are all looking forward to a good rest at the Exeat weekend after a busy first three weeks.

National Finals! On Monday the U11A headed up to Rugby School for the IAPS Midlands Qualifier event. The day started well with a 1-0 win over Richard Pate and a tight 0-0 draw with Repton. The boys then exploded. In a 12 minute match they managed to beat Fairfield 10-0 and a 2-1 win over Kimbolton meant we topped the group. The boys then beat Altringham in the quarter final with a tight 1-0 win to take us into the semi final. Moulsford scored a short corner at the start of the game. We came back with five short corners and hit both posts, but the ball just wouldn’t go in. This meant we lost the semi final and headed into the third place play-off against Solihull School. After a 0-0 match and 0-0 extra time it meant a place in the National Finals would come down to strokes. The boys held their nerve to win 3-2 and put them into the National Finals later this term, meaning they are in the top 20 in the country before they even arrive. A great day for the boys and the school.

Girls’ Team of the Week - U12A The U12A team won the Severnside Tournament that was held at Dean Close School. They won all of their games convincingly. Well done to all of the girls involved and their coach Miss Cook.

Important Notice Drop-off Times - Please do not drop off children before the allotted meet time as they will be unsupervised until the member of staff comes on duty. With such a busy car park, we must ensure the children are safe and therefore ask that if a family arrives early, parents remain with their children until the meet time. Pick-up Times - Please ensure your child is picked up at the appropriate time and are signed out.

Uniform Pupils to arrive in their games kit, wearing their full tracksuit and have their games bag with them. After sport all children must sign out with their team coach.

Absences A reminder to parents that if your child needs to miss a Saturday event, permission must be obtained from Mr O’Sullivan with a week’s notice. If your child is unwell and therefore unavailable for a Saturday event, please email Mr Simpson or Mrs McNulty the night before, or telephone the school on 01242 522 697 between 08:15 and 08:45.

Siblings If you have a child in Year 7 or 8 and others in Years 3, 4, 5 or 6 there will be an option to drop your younger child at “Sibling Club”. Children should be dropped at The Prep School Reception at 08.15. They will be registered by the Reception staff and directed to the club where they will be supervised until their meet time. There is no post-match childcare available for siblings.

And finally... Dear Parents After a busy start to the Term at The Prep we have quickly reached our first Exeat weekend. Exeat weekends are a fantastic opportunity for us all to rest, spend time with our families and replenish our batteries for the weeks ahead. Learning to take time to relax, reflect and do things we enjoy is a vital skill to develop early on in life. Our pupils have been practising some of these things already this week during relevant activities taking place at The Prep… Yoga - Lower School have been taking part in yoga and mindfulness sessions; working as a group to discover the benefits of posing, breathing and meditation. If you fancy an early morning yoga session this weekend, I am sure that they will share with you all that they have learned! Sharing a meal (and a conversation) - The Kingfishers have had their parents’ lunches this week and enjoyed hosting you to share a meal together. I was delighted to see the fantastic conversations taking place during lunchtime and how much everyone enjoyed the company. Look out for clips in the video highlights that will be sent out at Half Term.

Enjoying a good book – the English department has launched the 20 books in 2020 initiative, encouraging pupils to read 20 books this year. I certainly hope you and your children find time this weekend to relax with a good book. Scooby and I certainly will do. Whatever you do, have an enjoyable Exeat.

Doing something you enjoy – there is so much going on each week at The Prep that the children enjoy, from interesting lessons to artistic endeavours and physical activity. It was particularly pleasing to see our pupils enjoying themselves onstage last week at ‘A celebration of the Arts’. I know that the audience enjoyed it too.
