Kingfishers Update Brown Bear Brown bear, brown bear what do you see? This week the children have been focusing on the beautiful Eric Carle book. They retold the story using lots of different props including the fabulous masks they made with Mrs Westgate.

Reception Round-up Coding Reception have had a great time this week learning about code. Can you programme the train to stop, go and change direction? The Kingfishers’ prefects were a great help explaining how everything worked. DT After a long discussion on safety the children in Reception used real tools to measure, saw and drill. All the parts are ready for construction of their own teddy bears. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1945 7 February 2020

Kingfishers Update

Jack and the Beanstalk Year 1 have been applying their knowledge of traditional story telling this week by acting out the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Their enthusiasm, participation and creativity were evident for all to see! We now look forward to writing our own version of the story and sharing our wonderful work with everybody!

Kingfishers and Lower School Chess Challenge An afternoon of Chess for Kingfishers took place last Friday when they went off to Lower School to play in the Chess Challenge. For some of the children this was their first time playing in a proper tournament and they all played with great sportsmanship. Well done to Jasmine, the new Lower School champion and to Torin who was the Kingfishers champion. After school on Friday the Kingfishers played even more Chess as they were entered in the national Delancey Chess Tournament too! Keep pushing the wood! Lower School News Family Maths Puzzle Last Thursday Lower School celebrated maths with a family maths puzzle afternoon. We enjoyed solving puzzles, investigating patterns and many favourites including rubiks cubes. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers enjoying spending time together and facing challenges. Perseverance was the key word for the afternoon and the children soon learned what was required to solve even the trickiest of puzzles. The children should be congratulated for their positive attitudes and for helping to make this such a fun filled event.

Boarding House Update Last Sunday the Boarders appreciated a relaxed afternoon at the cinema, with a choice of four different films, including the recently released Dolittle! It has been a busy first half of term but lots of fun. We enjoyed supporting the Boarders taking part in the ‘Celebration of the Arts’ event (pictured) and everyone performed brilliantly. Mrs Baird recently celebrated her birthday and shared five caterpillar cakes during our Sunday Night TV Series evening (pictured)! The Boarders have been fascinated by David Attenborough’s latest production, ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet’, hosted in Mr and Mrs Bairds’ flat, one of three viewing options. We encourage friendships between all ages, particularly through our ‘Boarding House Families’, which are groups of around six Boarders from a range of different year groups, with a nominated Year 8 who acts as the head of the family. Ewan (Year 3) really enjoys having Boarders’ Tea with Ronan (Year 8) and his friends (pictured), Ronan is head of Ewan’s Boarding House Family. We spend roughly an hour winding down each evening, with a snack, showers, quiet activities in Dorms and quiet reading before ‘lights out’. This week, the Year 3, 4 and 5 Boarders played a variety of cards games with Mr Kernot (pictured), while also listening to the Football on the radio before some quiet reading! We love the change of pace between the day and evening, week and weekend. We are also very much looking forward to visiting the Harry Potter Studios this coming Sunday!

Cheltenham College Maths Challenge This week four pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 represented The Prep in the annual Cheltenham College Maths Competition. Working collaboratively in their teams of four, our mathematicians had to use a wide range of skills to solve a variety of challenging problems. The Pupils really excelled with the Year 5 team coming second, and the Year 6 team coming 3rd. Well done to all the pupils for their impressive achievement.

In Other News History Bee and Bowl Championships On Sunday 2 February, six Upper School historians went to London to take part in the History Bee and Bowl Championships, the first time that Cheltenham College has taken part in this event. The day involved history quizzing as a team and individuals through various rounds, using a ‘buzzer system’ not unlike ‘University Challenge’. The team did fantastically against some of the best schools in the country and older pupils. Despite being completely new to the format, they finished the day by winning their fifth group match and earned a stop off at Beaconsfield Services on the way home (pictured)! Despite not getting through to the finals, the team did a superb job and should be very proud of their efforts. It was a great day out and the pupils were great ambassadors for the school. Well done to Thomas (captain), Felix, Carys, Matilda, Ngonie and Taylor for some excellent history quizzing!

Radio Star Drummer Well done to Jean-Christian L who was on the ‘Show and Tell’ segment of the Zoe Ball BBC radio 2 show on Wednesday morning. He played the drums from Lake House along to a backing track and chatted to her briefly before playing. Very exciting!

And finally... Dear Parents Poor Sally-Ann never finds it easy to decipher what I have scrawled down for this blog. Normally she manages to make a pretty good fist of it. Today, I’m afraid, the writing is even harder to read than normal - the reason, my hands are still in a semi-frozen state! I popped out three or four hours ago for a few minutes to catch the Boys’ U13 Hockey team play a match in the Regional IAPS Championships we have been hosting today. With no coat or hat or gloves I was totally unprepared for the biting wind and generally freezing temperature but didn’t expect to be out for too long. However…the boys were playing fantastically well and kept winning very tense, exciting games so clearly I couldn’t leave. After every game Sally-Ann got a phone call saying I would be at least another half an hour - and I got more and more excited, but also colder and colder. After thrilling wins against Dean Close in the quarter finals and Bromsgrove in the semi finals the boys ended up runners up to a strong Dragon team - qualifying for the National Finals, which we are also hosting, in a month’s time. Huge congratulations to all involved - and my hands are currently going through the pins and needles stage of warming up! Hence the terrible writing and my apologies to my very long suffering PA!

For those of you driving to school on Wednesday morning you may have been lucky enough to be listening to Show and Tell with Zoe Ball on Radio 2 around 0740. The star of the show was our very own Jean-Christian L from Year 5 who chatted to Zoe for a few minutes about his musical ambitions before dazzling everyone with his fantastic drumming - all live from Lake House. When he is a rich and famous “Rock God” we can all say we were there for his first nationwide performance - well done! With the House Cross-Country being ‘enjoyed’ as I look out of my window writing this and a busy morning of House matches tomorrow there is the spirit of healthy competition in the air. Hopefully you can come and share in it tomorrow.
