Kingfishers Update

Goldilocks We have been learning the story ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’. “Somebody’s been eating my porridge” “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair” “Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed” The children have really enjoyed acting out the story in the Nursery and also at Forest School. They used the resources they could find around them to help retell this traditional tale.

Reception Round-up A huge well done to all of our Reception children! They thoroughly enjoyed carrying out their Bear Assembly this week. Remember “If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise…”

Kingfishers Update

Super Saturday - Outdoor Learning It was a beautiful morning on Saturday when we gathered for an outdoor learning session. The children enjoyed making birdfeeders but the best bit was definitely the hot chocolate!

African Animal Dioramas Year 1 had a fabulous time creating their African animal habitat dioramas. They all displayed super resourcefulness by selecting their own materials to match their written design.

Lower School News Half Term round-up We cannot believe how fast the weeks are flying by. Perhaps it is because we fill them with so many fun and exciting lessons and events!! This half term the children have dressed up and experienced life as ancient Greeks, re-written some classic tales such as The Willow Pattern Story, Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig or as you may know it – The Three Little Pigs. This work has become a part of some fantastic displays. Lower School has taken part in some very successful sporting fixtures both at home and away. We have seen some great teamwork and positive attitudes. We thoroughly enjoyed the family maths afternoon, it was so rewarding to see so many of you taking part with enthusiasm. There have been some delicious aromas coming from our kitchen during enrichment, we hope that you have enjoyed your sausage rolls and jam tarts! As the children work so hard, it is equally important that they find the time to chill and relax. Our wellbeing sessions this half term have ensured that the children have the tools to do this. COMING UP: · Lower School presentation week · Parents’ pancake race · Year 3 trip to The Butterfly Garden at Dundry Nurseries · World Book Day · Young Apprentice Day

Boarding House Update On Sunday morning we set off from school for the long awaited trip to the Harry Potter Studios. We had some avid Potter fans who had been previously, but for many it was their first experience and there was much excitement. We have been preparing by watching the Harry Potter films over the last few Saturday night film evenings. After watching an introduction to the studios in the cinema room, we entered the magical ‘Great Hall’, and from there set off exploring all the sets, costumes and experiences from all eight of the films. Since our last Boarders’ trip two years ago, there has been much added; including Platform 9 3/4, the Forbidden Forest and most recently Gringotts Bank and the vault beneath. Though most of the tour was inside, we did manage to get caught out by Storm Ciara whilst exploring the Knight Bus and Privet Drive in the one outside part in the middle of the tour. One of the highlights as always was exploring the gift shop at the end where a variety of Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, posters, magnets and postcards etc. were purchased as a reminder of the day. On our return to school we were able to enjoy a tasty roast before getting an early night before the busy final week before half term.

English Department - 20 in 2020 This week’s Caught You Reading winner is Verity C. Keep up the reading everyone! Congratulations to Ted M who has been named this week’s reader of the week. Great work Ted! Year 8 Scholars’ trip to The Woman in Black Following last Saturday morning’s House Hockey and Netball fixtures, the Year 8 Scholarship group headed to London to see the acclaimed stage performance of “The Woman in Black” by Susan Hill, a text which they have been studying for the English course. After an hour relaxing in Covent Garden, including some very entertaining street theatre, we headed for Zizzi’s for a preshow dinner, before a short stroll around the corner to the Fortune Theatre, where Stephen Malatratt’s celebrated show has been running for over 30 years. The Scholars greatly enjoyed the show, with its memorable jump-scares and some incredible stagecraft. It is no wonder the show is so popular!

Prep Eco-Committee Update Now that the Prep’s Eco-Committee is up and running, Year 5 took the initiative this week and carried out a school-wide litter pick. Armed with heavy-duty gloves, sacks and a lot of enthusiasm, the Year 5 pupils and their tutors (along with Miss Sheehan and Mr Newson) went around the school collecting as much litter as they could find. As you can see from the pictures, it was a great success! Please do take a look at the newly created Eco-Committee board in the House Corridor to see what we are getting up to each week!

Flying Start Challenge Well done to all of our pupils who attended the Flying Start Challenge this week. The Challenge is a contest run by aerospace businesses and organisations in the South West. As well as pitching their ideas to a panel of experts, the pupils flew the gliders they built and took part in many team building exercises. Congratulations to the following team who have qualified for the Grand Finals later in the year after winning the engineering quiz: Thomas S, Taylor S, Jasper H and Kevin Y

Boys’ Team of the Week - U11D After a stunning week, with IAPS Qualification from our 1st VII and great tournament wins by our 2nd VII and U11A it was tough to see past these honours, but acknowledgment simply has to go to the stunning result from our U11D team on Wednesday. Mr Wells’ boys travelled over to Dean Close and put in a tremendous performance, winning 6-1. Well done lads!

Boys’ Hockey Results U11C vs Dean Close Drew 0 - 0 U11D vs Dean Close Won 6 - 1

Severnside Hockey Report Wednesday afternoon saw the much anticipated Severnside Hockey Tournaments at U9AB, U10AB, U11AB, 1s and 2nd VII level. The boys played some magnificent Hockey, representing the school superbly. Well done to the U10A for their runner’s up spot, but pick of the teams were the U9B, U11A and 2nd VII who all won their tournaments. There are lots of medals to be handed out in assembly after half term in what is proving to be one of our strongest Hockey seasons for a number of years. It is a testament to the strength in depth of the boys at the school and the importance of ensuring the lower ability teams get the same level of coaching as the A teams.

IAPS National Finals After not qualifying for the IAPS National Hockey Finals for the last seven years, Cheltenham College Prep can now proudly announce that we have two teams through this year – both the U11A and the 1st VII. Last Friday saw us host the U13 Regional Qualifier, a great honour that is superbly run by Mr Lang. The boys hit the ground running with some great wins over Beachborough and Lambrook in the group stages, before a narrow loss to Dragon. This put us into the quarter-final against Dean Close with the winner not only going into the semi-finals, but qualifying for Nationals. In an absolute thriller we managed a 2-1 win and walked straight into a semi final against Bromsgrove. Without a break the boys simply carried on their good form and won that 2-1 as well. In the final the boys came up against the Dragon again, again going down, but walking away with a superb runner’s up spot and a place in the top 20 Hockey schools in the country. Well done boys.

The Grand Masquerade Ball On Thursday night pupils in Years 6 to 8 attended the Grand Masquerade Ball. They were treated to a fabulous supper by our amazing catering team with a white chocolate fountain for pudding! Paul the Magical Magician wowed everyone with his slight of hand tricks and even roped some of the staff in to be his assistants. The disco was also great fun as The Prep’s top 10 greatest songs of all time (as voted for by the pupils) was blasted out. Thank you to everyone who helped make the night such a great success!
