Kingfishers Update

Jam Sandwiches Year 1 have been writing instructions on how to make a delicious jam sandwich. We remembered to use some superb bossy verbs and even got to taste our results!

World Book Day Year 1 have had a fun-filled World Book Day! We enjoyed taking part in the school fashion show and loved welcoming Year 3 to our class to share their stories. We had a load of fun taking part in a book quiz; the winning team were awarded with a prize!

Famous People Topic This term Year 2’s topic is ‘Famous People’. Fraser Gunn, a volunteer from the RNLI came to talk to us all about Grace Darling and water safety. He showed us how the life jacket has evolved over time. We know which one we prefer! We found out that it takes £186 million to keep the RNLI running for just one year and that it is a charity. We hope to raise some money for them to show our appreciation. We had a brilliant afternoon.

Kingfishers Update

Three Little Pigs

We have heard lots of cries of “Little Pig, Little Pig let me come in” all week. The children had a great time designing and painting the pigs’ houses.

St David’s Day “Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! We had lots of fun making and eating Welsh cakes!

Kingfishers announces that we will sadly be losing Mrs Emma Bell at the end of the academic year as she will be moving to Scotland. Mrs Bell has been a valued member of our team for the last 3 years and we will miss her greatly. We are very happy to announce though that Mrs Vicky Jenkins will be joining our team from September. Mrs Jenkins will be a very welcome addition to our department, with her extensive teaching experience and knowledge of The Prep. There will be plenty of opportunities coming up next term to say goodbye to Mrs Bell and to meet Mrs Jenkins.

Dazzling Design Club Super Saturday certainly made some children’s dreams come true as they spent their time designing and then creating their very own dream catchers.

Lower School News Busy week! Lower School have had a busy week and have been out and about on various trips. On Monday, Year 3 visited Dundry Nurseries as well as the Butterfly Garden and had a fantastic day with Chris Evans and his team. Activities included: planting seeds and potatoes, going on a treasure hunt and searching for signs of spring. It was also interesting to see how old VHS video tapes are recycled using every single piece. Tuesday was Year 4’s turn to visit Compton Verney as part of their History topic on Vikings. During their visit, they sampled some Viking food, made a village hut and put together a wattle and daub fence.

Boarding House Update After a busy week back after half term, the Boarders’ enjoyed a fun weekend in and out of the House. On Saturday night the Year 8s, as a celebration after a hard week of exams, had a pizza and film feast in the Houseparents’ Lounge. On Sunday we had our second annual Year 8 Boarders’ Superteam event where we hosted Dean Close and Wycliffe Boarders in a fun multi sport tournament. There was a lot of enthusiasm and some great sportsmanship on display throughout the afternoon whilst playing football, hockey, badminton, table football, pool and table tennis. The Prep Team 1 came out on top at the end, captained by Ronan and Ngonie. Congratulations to both Prep teams for having a go at all the sports and getting to know some Boarders from the other schools. The Year 3-7 Boarders headed off with Miss Sheehan to Bristol Aquarium for a relaxed afternoon of fish viewing and feeding, a trip request that had been suggested in our Boarders’ Council meetings. Enjoy a restful Exeat before our last weekend in the House this term, which will see an outing to Cadbury World on Sunday, as well as some final Three Musketeers Rehearsals.

English Department - World Book Day We would like to congratulate all of the pupils at The Prep for their amazing response to World Book Day 2020! As with every year, there were so many creative and imaginative costumes, and whilst we were disappointed that author John Dougherty was not able to join us for the day due to ill health, Mr Dawson did his usual masterful job of compering the Fashion Show extravaganza, in which all pupils were able to strut their stuff! We have had a very encouraging response to the annual Storyboxes and Extreme Reading competitions, and all WBD certificates will be presented in Monday’s assembly. We would like to extend a huge thanks to all parents for their support, and for their continued encouragement of reading.

Da Vinci Decathlon On Monday and Tuesday this week, the Year 8 Scholars made the long journey via minibus with Mrs Reid and Mr Newson to Ampleforth College in the North York Moors to participate in the UK heats of the Da Vinci Decathlon. This is a prestigious international academic competition that tests abilities in the Arts, Sciences, STEM, Chess, General Knowledge and Mathematics. The winners of the UK heats then represent the country in the international finals, which are traditionally held in Milan every autumn. The Prep students were competing in the Junior Category for Years 7/8 with seven other prep and state schools from across the UK and overall, there were 11 schools taking part in the UK heats. Demonstrating great ability and teamwork, the Prep’s Scholars performed brilliantly to win the Maths/Chess categories and came second overall (for both Junior AND Senior categories!) in the General Knowledge challenge. This superb effort meant that the Prep came 3rd overall nationally in the Junior Category (finishing closely behind schools which have been sending teams for far longer). This is a tremendous result and all of us at the Prep are incredibly proud of their efforts. Each and every single student conducted themselves perfectly throughout their time in Yorkshire and they are fine ambassadors for our school – and because of this we have already been invited to take part again next year!

And Freya is pointing to the ‘Highly Commended’ collaborative piece, ‘Indian Dreams’ created by nine pupils in by Middle School Art Club. Other prizes went to Alia T in Year 2. Maryam N, won the over all Year 2 category. Well done everyone. This was our first year of entering the competition, I have high hopes for next year!

And finally... Dear Parents

If you would like to play in either the cricket or tennis, please contact Andrew Hill (hillbilly67@me.com) or

As another exeat looms the sun is finally shining,

Lucy Hill

we are all starting to hope that the wet and windy

(lucy24bennerley@yahoo.co.uk) respectively.

storm season is behind us. It has been something of a muddy slog at times trying to keep events on and children exercised, but they have all been stoic about the whole thing and just got on with it - and done amazingly well. The number of IAPS National Finals reached, or tournaments won or qualifying for National Cross-Country (they really are the brave ones!) is unprecedented. Although this makes the last two weeks of term, and indeed first week of the Easter holidays, incredibly busy we are so proud of every child who has represented the school in any team and we look forward to seeing how the teams who have qualified get on. On the sporting front the serious business gets underway in the Summer Term….The staff vs parents cricket match and parents’ tennis competition take place on Sunday 7 June. This year Prep Parents are putting on a social event, with BBQ and drinks after the matches. It promises to be a wonderful day - and I hate to say it,

We have sent out updated information regarding Coronavirus over the last 24 hours. Thank you for your support with this. We will continue to monitor the situation extremely closely and Nicky and I, along with our pastoral teams, meet regularly with a variety of health professionals to ensure we have the very best and most up to date advice. Sadly, the situation has caused the cancellation of the IAPS Ski Championships where we were due to compete, and we have just postponed the visit of Gakushuin School from Tokyo who were due to join us in April. We very much hope this can be rearranged for next year. Being a Head really is a wonderful job, but it isn’t without its stresses, but even I was shocked when I compared these two pictures of myself, one taken when I took up the reigns here in 2018 and the other taken yesterday. They have clearly been tough times… Enjoy the Exeat.

but it is a few years since the parents have walked off with the cup!!!
