Kingfishers Update

Billy Goats Gruff Throughout the week the children have been enjoying lots of thing relating to our story ’The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. They particularly loved creating some splodgy troll paintings. They were very excited to see the pattern their paint made on the paper and then added facial features to bring their troll to life. We also talked about symmetry!

Yummy Pancakes After all the excitement of the pancake races in the morning, Reception made their own pancakes. They sifted, mixed and tossed but the best bit was definitely eating them. What yummy toppings did you have on yours?

Kingfishers Update

Bossy Boots This week in Year 1 we have enjoyed being ‘bossy boots’ for the day by giving and following instructions. We have used skills such as perseverance and participation to complete barrier games including building Lego sculptures, instructing a partner how to draw a picture and playing the ‘Beetle’ game, which was our favourite!

Beatles Mania Year 2 enjoyed an afternoon listening to some of the Beatles’ greatest hits. They then decided to create their own psychedelic album covers. They took care to choose contrasting colours and funky designs. The future is bright!

Lower School News Viking Invasion There has been a Viking invasion in Lower School! On Thursday 13 February the children in Year 4 experienced a Viking extravaganza. They were given a Viking name and spent the day learning about how the Vikings lived. The day was jam packed with activities from making their own broaches to constructing a detailed Viking village. The children also displayed their culinary skills by making delicious Viking oat biscuits, yummy! Once again the children and staff enjoyed an action packed and informative day together.

Townsend-Warner History Prize This year, 23 Prep pupils entered the Townsend-Warner History Prize. There were representatives from all four Year 8 History sets and also a number of enthusiastic Year 7s. The competition is over 125 years old and is one of the oldest institutions in the preparatory school world. The Prize consists of two papers. The first has 100 questions demanding one-word, or one-sentence, answers from world history, but with a strong emphasis on British history. Some are straightforward and many are more obscure. The top 250 candidates qualify from Paper 1 to sit Paper 2, with over 1,000 pupils entering the competition nationally. Paper 2 is in the form of essay questions, but allows candidates a very wide choice so that they can write on what they know, but also show analytical skill and historical imagination. Two pupils from Cheltenham Prep qualified to sit Paper 2. Thomas S scored 82/100 (finishing 14th nationally) and Felix W scored 62/100 (finishing 97th nationally). These are fantastic results and an improvement on their efforts last year, as both Thomas and Felix made the top 250 as Year 7s! In particular, Thomas has achieved the highest Paper 1 finish (14th) of any previous Prep candidate! We wish Thomas and Felix the best of luck for Paper 2, writing five essays in two hours (pictured) having just finished their Scholarship Examinations! Mr Baird, Head of History

Scholars’ Trip The Year 8 Academic Scholarship candidates ended a busy week of formal exams by travelling to the Pitt-Rivers & Natural History Museums in Oxford to start their post-scholarship enrichment programme. Their challenge was to find an artefact or museum piece of interest and create their very own independent research project based around it back at school. The pupils now have until the May Half Term to research, create and then present their work not only to their friends and Prep staff, but their families too‌ Naturally, we are really looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Watch this space!

And finally... Dear Parents As you well know, no two weeks in a Prep School are ever the same. This week we have had Beatles-mania, a Viking Invasion, History success, trips and far too many pancakes! (Please note how I avoided the temptation to make a flipping good pun there. Oops, sorry!). The variation is what makes life at The Prep the great fun that it is. Just a quick glance at the calendar reminds me that we can expect a Di Vinci Decathalon, House Music, lots of sport and, of course, World Book Day. Reading has been a regular feature in Prep For The Week over the past year with the Million Word Readers challenge, the 20 in 2020 scheme and the ‘Caught You Reading’ award. These initiatives, combined with the recently refurbished library, have boosted our pupils’ desire to read even further. I hope that they, and you, have noticed the benefits both inside and outside of the classroom. Rest assured however that World Book Day will not just be several hundred pupils with their noses in dusty old literature – we’re looking forward to visiting authors, class readings, themed activities and, of course, the fancy dress!

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1947 28 February 2020

It really is a celebration of reading that we all look forward to each year. I hope that you find time over the dinner table in the coming weeks to discuss your favourite reads with your child. I have asked various members of The Prep pupil body for their must-read suggestions and it has led to some fascinating literary conversations. They are certainly well-read and my reading list is now much longer! But now, I must dash as it’s time for me to go rummaging through the dressing-up box ready for Thursday…! Have a great weekend,
