I would like to welcome you all to the world of CheltenhamPrep as it was in 2021/22. It is fantastic to have a yearbookto help everyone to remember what was a very specialyear. They say a picture tells a thousand words so thisbook is very much a pictorial journey through just abouteverything that the prep school had to offer through thecourse of the year. It cannot, of course, tell any of the myriadof stories of the year in completeness, but more it can act asan aide‑memoire, perhaps for when you are old and grey, rekindling memories and feelings of a very special time. Ihope you enjoy it. Tom

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH APRIL MAY JUNE SEPTEMBER 6
We were thrilled to welcome the pupils back to school in September! They took part in all manner of activities, including wellbeing workshops, team building exercises, chalk drawing and many more linked to our key skills and attributes: Challenge, Participation, Empathy, Resilience and Creativity. We made the most of the fantastic weather with a BBQ lunch on the fields; it was lovely to see all of our pupils sitting in the shade under the trees with their lunch, smiling and catching up with their friends. The day proved to be a great success and allowed the children, both returning and new, to re-connect and settle back into school life.
Back to School Extravaganza!
Wellbeing Workshop in Pre-Prep
As part of the activities welcoming pupils back to school this week, Mrs Avery our new House Parent and Pre Prep Teacher ran a wellbeing workshop for the children in Pre Prep. Here’s what she had to say about the session: Starting back to school can come with a mixture of different emotions, we spoke about what these might be and started to introduce some skills to help develop resilience and confidence. The children enjoyed practising ‘five fingered’ breathing, different yoga positions in the form of animals to feel strong and we ended the session with some relaxation/massage techniques to start to manage their emotions and feel calm and happy. All of the Pre-Prep children engaged beautifully and I am looking forward to continuing these lessons with the children to build upon their positive wellbeing.

A Return to Chapel
It was incredible to see all of our pupils gathered together once again for the first Chapel service of the academic year. A strong sense of community was shared by all as we joined together to sing and hear uplifting words and messages about the year ahead.

Our exciting new leadership programme The Chadwick Programme – launched this year, with Year 8 taking part in a host of fantastic after school activities. The programme is named after former pupil and professional racing driver Jamie Chadwick (OJ & Cha, 2016) and encourages pupils to use their initiative, creativity and resilience to succeed. The programme covers various life skills, community projects, organising of events and the development of key leadership skills.

Harvest Festival
SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH APRIL MAY JUNE OCTOBER 12
Pupils across various year groups were excited to explore the Cheltenham Literature Festival! We are so lucky to have this fantastic festival right on our doorstep, and pupils from all year groups spent time off timetable, enjoying various talks from celebrated authors and poets. Whilst at the festival, pupils in Years 5 and 6 were also kindly given a Rowan tree to plant at school from The Woodland Trust!
Pupils in Years 1 to 8 celebrated in style in Chapel by singing hymns including a rousing rendition of ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’, and learning all about Harvest and why we should be thankful for what we have and share what we can with others. It was wonderful to see all of the food items that pupils had brought in to be donated to local foodbanks, which will help those in need within our local community.
Full Boarders Settling in!
Cheltenham Literature Festival
At The Prep, we celebrated two Harvest Festivals in October one for Nursery and Reception, and the other in Chapel with Years 1 to 8. The children in Nursery and Reception were so excited to welcome their parents into school for their Harvest Festival. They learnt all about Harvest by acting out the story of the Enormous Turnip. Both the Nursery and Reception groups sang a harvest song beautifully and there were many parents with a few tears in their eyes.
October saw the return of the Full Boarders, a Boarding House of many nations, but a family of one. The Full Boarders enjoyed settling into the new routine and spent the first weekend enjoying a trip to Naunton Park, take away pizzas in the Boarding House, Movie Night, a trip to Bath Road and finished with a Sunday afternoon of inflatable fun.
It’s great to see our Year 8 pupils getting creative in the Art studio. Here they are making some beautiful pieces of Jewellery.

October was an extremely exciting month for our Music department in Lake House, as pupils from various year groups were joined by the English Symphony Orchestra for an entire day of workshops. During the String workshop, our pupils had the opportunity to learn more about conducting an orchestra, with some of them even giving it a go. Others got to experience a Double Bass workshop and had so much fun creating an impromptu Jazz piece together! It was great to see some of our Year 8 string players helping out in our Lower School string group. Year 8 pupils have been learning the importance of being good role models in their Chadwick Programme sessions, and to see this in action was fantastic.

India Day in Lower School
Year 5 have been writing to Grade 6 pupils at Gakushuin Primary School in Tokyo, following a successful penpal project last year. They have been greatly enjoying finding out all about Japan in recent weeks, and to give them a further taste of Japanese culture and cuisine, the children were treated to some lovely fresh sushi, courtesy of Kibou Cheltenham. 15
Year 4 enjoyed a ‘journey to India’ as part of their Geography topic. To celebrate and learn about the Indian culture, they dressed up in traditional clothing, learned to dance ‘Bhangra Style’, made diva lamps, created rangoli patterns and finally, ate a delicious array of Indian food.

Pre-Prep Art Competition Messy Firework Painting
The children in Nursery and Reception didn’t need to be asked twice to don their overalls and get messy with paint! To get into the spirit of bonfire night, pupils had the opportunity to experiment with paint in lots of different ways by using their breath, pipettes, tea bags and glitter to create a firework inspired explosion of colour! Pupils also spent time learning about firework safety and how to be safe and sensible around a bonfire or at a firework display.
Pre Prep were invited to participate in an Art competition during Half Term. The theme was Autumn. We had over 30 entries they were all wonderful. Mrs Parsley had the tricky job of choosing the three winners! Here are photos of the three winners and their wonderful creations. Well done to all who entered! 19

Every pupil and member of staff at The Prep gathered together at 11 o’clock to remember all those who gave their life in the World Wars and later conflicts. Following a two minute silence, William J (Y7) played ‘The Last Post’ whilst pupils stood in quiet contemplation. We also heard readings from Jemima P (Y8) and William G (Y8) alongside a short prayer led by Mr O’Sullivan. Our younger pupils in Pre Prep observed a two minute silence and the children also spent time creating beautiful artwork to mark the event.

The Shakespeare Experience
21
After a break of nearly two years, live theatre once again made its way to The Prep stage, with some of our Year 8 pupils performing a dramatic piece from Richard III. Their unity and energy were great to see and clearly, they are a strong ensemble to watch in the future. Learning Shakespeare is never easy, but using shorter, half hour scripts of the major plays enables the younger actors to access the plots and experience the language. The main event of the evening was a combined group of Year 5, 6 and 7s who performed Romeo and Juliet. For some, it was the first time in front of an audience and nerves were running high, but the children all conducted themselves superbly and presented a play that saw ‘two households, both alike in dignity’ eventually realising that their animosity against each other led to far greater sorrow for all. ‘A Christmas Carol’ Lower School pupils put on a fantastic performance of 'A Christmas Carol', by Charles Dickens. The children had worked incredibly hard learning their lines and rehearsing throughout the term, and it certainly showed. The performance was incredibly professional and was enjoyed by all in the audience. A big thank you to all of the parents, guardians and families who took the time to come and watch. Pupils in Year 2 had a fantastic time learning all about different coins and their value during one of their Mathematics lessons in January. The children decided on suitable prices for various items in their Mathematics shop, before playing ‘shops’ and challenging themselves to add up the cost of their shopping. Who knew that Mathematics could be so cleverly disguised as a game...?
Pupils in the Nursery School and Reception were treated to a very exciting visit from the Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service! The children then got to try on pieces of uniform, sit in the fire engine and even have a go at holding the hose. It was lovely to see all of their excited faces and hear things such as ‘wow, this is the best day ever’, and ‘I’ve never seen a real life fire engine before!’

Award Winning Author Visits The Prep
The Prep warmly welcomed award winning author Tom Palmer in January. A hugely successful day included fun, engaging and informative sessions enjoyed by all pupils in Years 5 to 8. We learned a huge amount about his wonderful storytelling through books such as ‘Arctic Star’ and ‘After the War’, teaching our children how historical events can inspire narrative fiction. Tom proved to be a very popular visitor to The Prep with many pupils eager to meet him and have their newly acquired books signed. 31
100 Things To Do Before Leaving Lower School Years 3 and 4 always enjoy the fresh air during their Outdoor Learning lessons and in January, the children were introduced to ‘100 Things to do before leaving Lower School’. Happy New Year!
As part of our Thrive (PSHE/RSE) programme, we invited in a visiting speaker to give a talk to our Year 7 and 8 pupils about Diversity, Inclusion and Racism. Mrs Danielle Babatunde is herself a teacher, who runs a consultancy firm that seeks to ‘Educate and Inspire’ young people on a wide range of issues, including those covered in the themes of Diversity, Inclusion and Racism. The children were all really engaged in the topics throughout, asked lots of insightful questions and enjoyed discussing various ‘scenarios’.
Informal Concert
3D Printing Year 6 impressed us with their use of the CAD system and 3D printer in their Design and Technology lessons. Their simple and effective design for a phone holder was a great example of our pupils creative vision becoming a reality.
A fantastic Informal Concert took place in Lake House featuring pupils from Year 3 to Year 8. For many of the children this was their first ever concert and we are pleased to report that they all delivered superb performances! The concert featured pupils playing a variety of instruments including the flute, saxophone, violin, cello, piano and voice. These concerts provide the children with the perfect introduction to playing in front of an audience alongside some of our older, more experienced musicians. 37

A ‘Fabulous Production’
“ In March, the fabulous production of ‘The Lion King’ was played to delighted audiences of both children and parents. I know that Heads can be prone to “superlatives itis”, but this show really was breathtaking. From the amazing masks and costumes to the fantastic singing and acting it really shone. It took us all on a journey through tears of sadness and tears of laughter and pretty much everything in between. What really stood out though was the incredible energy coming from all the performers. They gave it their all and they clearly loved being on stage. A triumph all round and huge thanks must go to all those involved for creating such a memorable end to the term. ”

Down on the Farm
Our boarders take every opportunity to get outside and enjoy the school grounds, and in April we were lucky to have some lovely sunny evenings.
Year 8 had a fantastic visit to a working farm courtesy of The Northmoor Meat Company. The day started with a tour of the farmyard and an introduction to the herd of Ruby Red Devon cows by James and Fi Florey, who own and run the farm. A wonderful farm walk gave opportunities for the children to learn more about regenerative farming principles which focus on ways to farm that not only sustain the environment but give back to the ecosystem and are far more environmentally friendly. A picnic by the river gave time for the pupils to plan their responses to debate titles such as ‘Oxfordshire County Council are right to provide only vegan food options at their council meetings’ and ‘Farmers should be encouraged to take land out of food production and put it into environmental schemes’ real life issues that farmers like Fi and James have to grapple with on a daily basis. Finally, lots of lamb feeding and cuddles provided the end to a wonderful day!
