OXFORD PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Thursday 31 October 2019, 7.30pm Joined by cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason (a household name since his performance at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding), Oxford Philharmonic begins our 2019–20 season with a grand tour. They start in Africa with a sparkling Rossini overture, then head north to France with SaintSaëns’ classicising first cello concerto, rich in melody and invention. After the interval, we journey to Athens with Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, full of youthful joie de vivre, concluding in Vienna with the first symphony by Beethoven, staking his claim to the classical inheritance of Mozart and Haydn.

Pre-Concert Talk (6.30pm to 7pm): Presented by Marios Papadopoulos. Free entry using your ticket for tonight’s concert.

2019 2017 ENGLISH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Sunday 24 November 2019, 7.30pm

Tamsin Waley-Cohen

ESO returns to Cheltenham with two of the most popular works in the repertoire and a soloist who is among the most exciting young instrumentalists in the UK today. Tamsin Waley-Cohen brings the rarelyperformed Concertino by Gal, a composer who combines a Straussian opening movement with a pure, late-romantic slow movement and bumptious finale, to create a piece which is fast gaining in popularity. Alongside Mozart’s much-loved Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Elgar’s noble and expansive Introduction & Allegro, this concertino forms the perfect centrepiece to an evening of outstanding and varied music for strings.

BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA NEW YEAR STRAUSS GALA Saturday 4 January 2020, 7.30pm Fast becoming an annual favourite, the New Year Strauss Gala returns once more to celebrate the arrival of 2020 with an uplifting selection of waltzes, marches and arias by the Waltz King and his contemporaries. The full forces of the BSO, under charismatic Polish conductor Marta Gardolińska, will be joined by the outstanding, Lancashire-born guest soprano Soraya Mafi. Enjoy an evening of swirling melodies, glamour and sparkle, including such favourites as Merry Wives of Windsor Overture, Tik-Tak Polka, An Artist’s Life, A Night in Venice, and, of course, the Radetzky March and The Blue Danube!

2020 ORCHESTRA OF THE SWAN Friday 28 February 2020, 7.30pm A trio of rousing 19th century works is the bill of fare for tonight’s concert, with a Beethoven masterpiece sandwiched between two deeply romantic Schumann offerings. First, the overture to Schumann’s four-act opera, Genoveva, premiered in 1850 and sharing similarities to another great German medievalthemed work of the same decade, Wagner’s Lohengrin. Schumann also closes proceedings, with his uplifting and joyous second symphony. The evening’s centrepiece needs no introduction; the pathos and majesty of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto places it in almost everybody’s top ten classical favourites.

SWEDISH PHILHARMONIA Wednesday 11 March 2020, 7.30pm As one of Scandinavia’s leading orchestras, the Swedish Philharmonia has developed an international reputation. We’re delighted to welcome them to Cheltenham, along with one of the world’s greatest violinists, Viktoria Mullova. The programme begins with Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony, with its elegiac slow movement and its famous Dresden amen, followed by Mullova’s performance of Prokofiev’s ethereal 2nd violin concerto. The concert ends with a rousing performance of Sibelius’ magnificent 5th Symphony, complete with its famous, exultant finale and haunting horn theme, said to be inspired by Sibelius witnessing a group of swans majestically taking flight.

2020 Emmanuel Tjeknavorian

BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Saturday 25 April 2020, 7.30pm BSO returns with a programme featuring two of the most popular works in the entire repertoire. Bruch’s First Violin Concerto, composed in 1866, was Number One in Classic FM’s Hall of Fame from 1996 to 2000, and remains among the most popular lyrical romantic works in the modern concert hall. Dvořák’s New World Symphony was born of the inspiration felt by the composer on his travels in North America in the 1890s. All four movements are interwoven with the dual flavours of European classic romanticism and North American native themes. Together, tonight’s two flagship works constitute an evening no music-lover could resist.

2020 Rimma Susanskaya

NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Sunday 24 May 2020, 3pm What finer way to make a Cheltenham Concert Series debut than with an all-Mozart programme featuring four of the Viennese prodigy’s absolute masterpieces? NSO are accompanied by a renowned quartet of conductor and soloists. Two works from the very end of Mozart’s life provide the evening’s book-ends: the overture to his final opera and the monumental penultimate symphony, which paved the way for the entire 19th century repertoire. The concert also features two earlier favourites, both with unforgettable melodic highlights: the sumptuous, slow, middle movement of the flute and harp concerto and the sparkling vocal virtuosity of the Exultate.

CONDUCTOR Joshua Weilerstein SOPRANO Carly Owen BEETHOVEN Egmont Overture, Op.84

R. STRAUSS Four Last Songs RACHMANINOV Symphony No.2 in E minor, Op.27

Joshua Weilerstein

BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES Saturday 13 June 2020, 7.30pm Our rousing series finale features Beethoven’s uplifting Egmont Overture – similar in style to his 5th Symphony and reflecting the heroism of a 16th century nobleman’s battle for freedom against the odds. This is followed by a sharp contrast, with the introspection and acceptance of fate, life and death that Richard Strauss brought to his final work, Four Last Songs, composed in 1948 when he was 84. Its sublime harmonies and orchestration place it near the pinnacle of 20th century musical genius. Ending the evening is one of Rachmaninov’s two best-known works, loved for its breadth, scale and its sumptuous 3rd movement Adagio theme.
