Our Chemainus Theatre Board is a diverse group devoted to supporting this wonderful organization now in its 20th year of bringing acclaimed live theatre to the Island. Some of our Board members are artists and actors, and others, like myself, stick to the business duties. So when I went to All Shook Up recently, I was transported back to the 50s via the genius of Elvis and Shakespeare, enjoying the countless hours of rehearsal and production that brought it to life. This past summer I joined the largest audience in Chemainus Theatre history attending Fiddler on the Roof. We shared the adversity faced by Tevye’s village and their faith that led them through, thanks to an intricately planned and skillfully staged production. Noises Off will take us behind the scenes as our cast struggles with its own troubled production of Nothing On. I know that we will be entertained watching the fictional company fumble and miss lines, all the time appreciating the quality of live theatre we have with the Chemainus Theatre Festival. I would like to say a special thank you to all of our sponsors and volunteers – without you we might have Nothing On at the Chemainus Theatre. Enjoy the show.

Welcome to the Chemainus Theatre Festival! We are excited to join with the Western Canada Theatre family to revive Noises Off and welcome Daryl Cloran and this fine cast to Chemainus. This spring, we wrote lots of grant applications to private foundations, and national and provincial funding bodies. The process involves reviewing patron surveys (thanks to over 2000 respondents), gathering letters of support from artists, the joys of number crunching, discussion with staff, and advanced planning – a challenging and rewarding exercise. This year was fascinating and uncovered a wide range of Chemainus Theatre Festival’s artistic impact on Vancouver Island. Here are a few highlights: Chemainus Theatre Festival’s exciting mandate continues to engage – a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to serving Vancouver Island and its visitors by creating exceptional theatre that explores and nourishes truth, hope, redemption, love and the human spirit! 2012 will include 330 performances, 27 performances for young audiences, 4 Canadian works, 2 affiliate productions and 840 work weeks for Canadian Equity and apprentice professionals. Alumni work all over North America – in Vancouver, Shaw, Stratford, Broadway, film and TV. 8 - 10 shows per season are produced on Vancouver Island, where we hire skilled craftspeople, buy materials, design sets, costumes, props and sound, rehearse for weeks, and stage every aspect of the show. After the Arts Club, Chemainus Theatre Festival is one of the largest professional not-for-profit theatres in BC. Education programs included academy style training, discounted ticket programs for students, weekend and classroom workshops, and Wednesday night talkbacks. Preparing grants reminded me of the positive and diverse artistry Chemainus Theatre Festival creates. By joining this show, you are a part of this creative act and the BC arts and cultural landscape. Michael Frayn

After two years National Service, during which he learned Russian, he read Philosophy at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He then worked as a reporter and columnist for The Guardian and The Observer, publishing several novels including The Tin Men (1965), winner of a Somerset Maugham Award, The Russian Interpreter (1966), which won the Hawthornden Prize, and Towards the End of the Morning (1967). More recent novels include A Landing on the Sun (1991), which won the Sunday Express Book of the Year and Headlong (1999), the story of the discovery of a lost painting by Bruegel, shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Fiction. His latest novel, Spies (2002), a story of childhood set in England during the Second World War, won the 2002 Whitbread Novel Award and the 2003 Commonwealth Writers Prize (Eurasia region, Best Book), and was shortlisted for the Whitbread Book of the Year. Michael Frayn is also the recipient of the 2002 Heywood Hill Literary Prize. His plays include Alphabetical Order (1975), Clouds (1976), Donkeys’ Years(1977), Make or Break (1980), Noises Off (1982), and Benefactors (1984). Copenhagen (1998), about the 1941 meeting between German physicist Werner Heisenberg and his Danish counterpart Niels Bohr, first staged at the Royal National Theatre in London, won the 1998 Evening Standard Award for Best Play of the Year and the 2000 Tony Award for Best Play (USA). His play Democracy (2003), is set in 1960s Berlin. His latest play for the Royal National Theatre is Afterlife (2008). Recent books are Stage Directions: Writing on Theatre 19702008 (2008), and Travels with a Typewriter (2009). A book of memoir, My Father’s Fortune: A Life, was published in 2010, was shortlisted for the 2010 Costa Biography Award, and won the 2011 PEN/Ackerley Prize. Michael Frayn is married to the biographer and critic Claire Tomalin.

Chemainus! Lindsey is so happy to be back in this sweet little town. Last seen in the Chemainus Theatre Festival’s production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe her recent credits include The Merchant of Venice, As You Like It (Bard on the Beach), Jitters, It’s a Wonderful Life, Becky’s New Car. Lindsey would like to thank Daryl, Mark and this wonderful cast, and congratulate them on this deliciously fun piece of theatre. “Just keep going!”

Ross is pleased to be making his Chemainus debut. His interest in theatre began just down the road in high school in Duncan. Since then Ross has completed over 200 designs across the country. He has taught for Douglas College’s Stagecraft program and Langara’s Studio 58. Ross is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada and the Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology. Thanks to the crew for their efforts on this show!

Born in England, David is a theatre stage manager, lighting designer, author and photographer. Stage management credits in BC include numerous productions for TheatreOne, Graffiti Theatre, and Chemainus Theatre Festival. David is pleased to return here for his 27th production, where he earlier in the year stage managed Harvest, and will also stage manage Chickens and Wingfield’s Folly later in the year. David’s photographs are held in the Museé national d’art moderné collection in Paris.

Janet has worked across Canada for stage, film and television. Stage credits include Sexy Laundry, Molly’s Veil, Ernestine Shuswap, If We Are Women, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Witness for the Prosecution, Blood Brothers, Romeo and Juliet (Richmond Gateway), Atlantis (Workshop West), The Hostage, Pump Boys and Dinettes (Belfry), Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It (Rocky Mountain Shakespeare), Joan Henry, Creation (Caravan Theatre), and No Great Mischief (Vancouver Playhouse).

Daryl is the Artistic Director of Western Canada Theatre, where he recently directed UBUNTU (The Cape Town Project). Daryl has directed at theatres across Canada, including: All For Love (National Arts Centre), Afterplay (Shaw), The Last Five Years (Canadian Stage), and This is How it Goes (Neptune). Daryl has been awarded the Canada Council’s John Hirsch Prize for Outstanding Emerging Director and a Robert Merritt Award for Outstanding Director.

Stage Productions include Skydive, Coup d’Etat, The Fantasticks, St. George, Calendar Girls, All The Way Home, True Love Lies, Henry VI, Richard III, 1984, The Marriage of Figaro, and La Boheme. Adrian is also the Lighting Director for Ballet BC and teaches Computer Assisted Drafting and Lighting for the Stage at Langara College’s Studio 58. He has been awarded numerous Jessies for his work as a lighting designer and is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada.

Andrew is extremely glad to be performing in his third production with Chemainus Theatre Festival! He has a Diploma in Performing Arts from the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria. Theatre credits include various productions with Theatre Under The Stars, Gateway Theatre, WCT, and Kimberley Summer Theatre. Sheila also designed the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Paralympics and is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada.

Robyn is thrilled to be back with such an amazing group in Noises Off! Selected credits include; Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (Carousel), Penny in Hairspray! (Arts Club), Gretel in Hansel and Gretel (Alberta Opera), Tipi Lala in Everybody Goes To Mitzi’s (Teatro La Quindicina) and Edna in June Moon (Media Room). Other favourite roles include; Miss Dorothy in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Irene in Stewart Lemoine’s The Addlepated Nixie.

Leon is happy to return to the CTF. In 2007, Leon was here playing Billy in Anything Goes and Smith in Murder on the Nile. It is also where he met his wife KJ Konkin. Other credits: Berowne in Love’s Labour’s Lost, Autolycus in The Winter’s Tale (Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan), Jerry in The Full Monty (Patrick Street Productions and Persephone Theatre), and Bobby in Urinetown (Firehall Theatre). A long-time Vancouver favourite, this is Simon’s first time with the Chemainus Theatre Festival. He recently starred as Estragon in Blackbird Theatre’s acclaimed production of Waiting For Godot, and as Lear in The Honest Fishmonger’s groundbreaking hit, King Lear. After Noises Off, Simon returns to Vancouver to appear in the Arts Club’s summer musical, Xanadu, followed later in the year by Blackbird Theatre’s next project, a new, multi-media adaptation of Moliere’s apocalyptic comedy, Don Juan.

Anita is thrilled to celebrate Chemainus Theatre Festival’s 20th anniversary season! First appearing in Chickens in 1995, she went on to play some of her most favourite roles here: Lottie in Enchanted April; Catherine in The Heiress; Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest; Bella in Lost in Yonkers; Myra in Hay Fever; Olivia in Mr. Pim Passes By; and Prossy in Candida. This is her 13th show with Chemainus Theatre Festival. Anita lives in Kamloops.

Christopher Weddell Selsdon Mowbray A graduate of the Playhouse Acting School, Christopher has played on stages in Europe and Canada. Christopher has directed several productions, including Waiting for Godot (Kaspar Theatre, Prague) and the Jessie-nominated Richard II (Bard on the Beach). Mr. Weddell is a founding member of Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival. This summer, Christopher will direct Romeo and Juliet in Kamloops for Project X. Heralding in spring with a laugh and a bang The laughter came in chuckles, guffaws, and outright knee-slaps when we first read the script for Noises Off – and things have been utterly laughable at the Chemainus Theatre Festival ever since. The moment our creative team discovered Michael Frayn’s “funniest farce ever written” (as acclaimed by The New York Post), there was no doubt that our audiences would love his comedic jaunt of tangled love lines, missed cues, and lost hope. Noises Off follows a North American acting company’s valiant, yet doomed, struggle to make their British sex comedy a Broadway hit. From the very start, their disastrous first dress rehearsal sets the tone for the troupe’s many flirtations and foibles. An onslaught of verbal and physical gymnastics follow. Amid the front of house and backstage havoc, including many slamming doors and a plate of flying sardines, the distressed actors desperately try to keep the play going – without the audience noticing the mayhem. But one question lingers: will they “kill it” on stage – or simply kill each other – on their way to the big city? It’s the perfect time of year for a show such as Noises Off; a springtime play that will easily brighten spirits as it

tickles funny bones. With a punchy storyline, quizzical (yet endearing) characters, a revolving stage, and the tongue-in-cheek portrayal of backstage antics, comedic relief is both definite and irresistible. There’s little question why critics and audiences around the world have made Noises Off one of the most popular plays in the English language since its 1982 premiere. In 1968, when powerhouse duo Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice penned fifteen minutes of Sunday School pop songs, they had no idea that their creative side-project would become one of Broadway’s biggest success stories. Today, the family-friendly storyline and catchy songs of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat has transformed this “coat of many colours” tale from the book of Genesis into a timeless moral narrative.

Webber’s eclectic mix of song styles, ranging from French ballads to western pop, 60s-era rock ‘n’ roll to 20s-era Charleston, and Caribbean-esque calypso to dance-club disco.
