Great thanks to those who have cared for this non-profit society in so many ways - those who donate gifts through fundraising campaigns, give time in volunteering, showcase talents in stagecraft, administration, and support, and a host of other tangible and intangible ways. While the Chemainus Theatre Festival works and plays to elevate artistry, stories, and experiences on the stage and throughout the Playbill Dining Room and Gallery, we do it with goals of enriching the region, advancing the arts, and building a just, equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible community to explore and nourish spirits as we go.
Thank you for joining Zachary and the team with this nostalgic, energetic, playful walk with past icons. And as we collectively move forward in this gathering space, we look forward to reconnecting with you at an upcoming show like A Tiny Christmas Carol, special events, and new experiences like the Playbill Presents Cabaret Series and other opportunities as we rebuild and rebound this year and next.
Enjoy the show.
The Legends That Never Truly Die
Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray Jr. (May 2, 1929 – Nov 5, 2005) was an American rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist. Rolling Stone placed Wray at No. 45 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Though he began in country music, his musical style went on to consist primarily of rock and roll, rockabilly, and instrumental rock.
Charles Hardin Holley (Sep 7, 1936 – Feb 3, 1959), known as Buddy Holly, was an American singer and songwriter who was a central and pioneering figure of mid-1950s rock and roll. His style was influenced by gospel music, country music, and rhythm and blues acts, which he performed in Lubbock with his friends from high school.
Philip David Ochs (Dec 19, 1940 – Apr 9, 1976) was an American songwriter and protest singer (or, as he preferred, a topical singer). Ochs was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, political activism, often alliterative lyrics, and distinctive voice. He wrote hundreds of songs in the 1960s and 1970s and released eight albums.
Hiram "Hank" Williams (September 17, 1923 – January 1, 1953) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Regarded as one of the most significant and influential American singers and songwriters of the 20th century, he recorded 55 singles (five released posthumously) that reached the top 10 of the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers chart, including 12 that reached No. 1 (three posthumously).
Jerry Lee Lewis (born September 29, 1935) is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. He has been described as "rock n' roll's first great wild man and one of the most influential pianists of the 20th century. His 1957 hit "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" shot Lewis to fame worldwide, followed by "Great Balls of Fire", "Breathless", and "High School Confidential".
Wilbert Huntington Harrison (Jan 5, 1929 – Oct 26, 1994) was an American rhythm and blues singer, pianist, guitarist and harmonica player. Harrison had a Billboard #1 record in 1959 with the song "Kansas City". It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
The Oh Boys Zachary Stevenson (BC), Shaun Whitey (AL) and Kieran McCabe (PA) banded together in 2018 to reproduce the music and magic of Buddy Holly and the Crickets in a Chicago production of "Buddy: the Buddy Holly Story". After nearly 100 sell-out performances, the show went on to win 5 Chicago Theatre Awards including Best Musical, Best Ensemble and Best Lead Performance.
CREATOR'S NOTES - ZACHARY STEVENSON
I’m not sure what it is, but people have been pointing out these likenesses to me all my life. It used to be a running in-joke in my duo, the Human Statues, that Jeff resented only ever getting compared to someone’s cousin’s brother. At the same time, people kept offering me celebrity comparisons. All in all, being a dead ringer has its perks, but sometimes it leaves me asking, “who am I?” Or perhaps, more frequently, “who am I tonight?”
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “art imitates life.” Well, for me, in many ways, the opposite is true. My life onstage has influenced my life offstage in immeasurable ways, including where I’ve lived, my friends and bandmates, and even how I met my wife. Phil taught me to fingerpick. Hank taught me to yodel. Buddy taught me how to Rock & Roll. Every character challenged me to become a better artist and influenced how I approach making my music.
I often say, since Buddy’s been so good to me, I try my best to be good to him by keeping his music and memory alive. So I pay tribute to many of the artists who’ve made me who I am today. I hope this show will also offer you a glimpse at the man behind the glasses through stories and original songs. Then maybe, just maybe, when you see me walking down the street, you might say, “Hey! That guy looks just like Zachary Stevenson!” for whom I am most certainly a dead ringer.
“Hasanyoneevertoldyou,youlook likeJimCarrey?”
“YoucouldtotallybeClarkKent.” "Oh,you’readeadringerforChrisIsaac" "Morrissey!” “Dr.Oz!”
