A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTORS Welcome back to a familiar place – the high-school gym. Between the banners and the basketball hoops people fall in and out of love, lunches get unpacked and traded, rallies are held for school spirit, ceremonies dish out awards and those glorious games are played for the pride of a school gathered in community. And welcome back to another place that we hope is wonderfully familiar as well – the theatre. Here stories can unfold in word and song, designs can capture the imagination, performances may ignite the spirit and we gather in community. It’s been a privilege to build and share together in this Vancouver Island hub for the arts, now 28 seasons strong in Chemainus. This place has a unique and abiding presence in the provincial arts scene and we look forward to celebrating with each new season and each new show. We are very pleased to open our 2020 season with The Marvelous Wonderettes – a nostalgic piece that invites us all to remember our youth, to reflect on decades as they change, and to come together to enjoy nostalgic performance and song. It’s a cast and creative team that we are happy to have back as all of them have performed in previous shows here in Chemainus - a team who are dedicated to the details of storytelling and the craft of theatre. Thank you for joining us here, at the Chemainus Theatre Festival, for the start of another dynamic season. Enjoy the show! Mark DuMez

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Who were you in high school? Were you that person ten years later? Did you revert back to that person at your high school reunion? Why? These are the questions I had the cast think about at the start of our process. Obviously, none of us attended high school in the 50s – so content and subject matter are at times, very different. But high school relationships haven’t changed – the tensions, the alliances, the gossip, the break-up-make-up cycles – all of that high school ‘stuff’ - we could relate to. High school is a tumultuous time of discovery, confusion, hormones, and growing up. At least for me it was. I wanted to be my own person, but I also wanted to be accepted and fit in. If only we could look back and tell our younger selves ‘everything is going to work out just fine’. But at the time I wouldn’t have believed it anyway. Everything is just so IMPORTANT. I didn’t go to my high school reunion because I was doing exactly what I said I would be doing in my yearbook write up under future goals: Julie is going to be rich and famous and living in New York. I was for sure living in New York at the time. Rich and famous? Well, everything is relative. My hope is that you see yourself in one (or many) of these characters and that you have a great time reminiscing! I want to thank Mark for giving me the opportunity to direct at Chemainus. This theatre holds a special place in my heart and having a chance to be at the helm of a show has been awesome. Thanks also to my collaborators - designers, heads of departments, marketing, stage management, crew, band - everyone who helped us get to this moment. Special shout out to my favourite MD, Chris King, and the four girls on stage. Julie Tomaino

Thrilled to be returning to Chemainus as a director, after choreographing both Footloose and Grease. Born/raised in Vancouver, Julie spent over 12 years in NYC – attending theatre school, then as a professional performer, most notably, a Radio City Rockette for 6 seasons. Favourite creative team credits: Newsies (TUTS), Billy Elliot (Theatre Calgary), Crazy For You (Gateway – Jessie Award Winner/Outstanding Choreo). Upcoming: Kinky Boots (Arts Club). Big Thanks Mark, Chris, TH, and Neil. Julietomaino.com

SEP 11 - OCT 3 In 1933, four women set out to prove that Canada’s favorite sport could belong to them as much as it could to men. Based on the incredible and inspirational true story of Ontario’s Preston Rivulettes women’s hockey team, history comes to life on stage as Hilda, Marm, Helen and Nellie, along with their coach, battle prejudice, The Great Depression, and wartime in order to win their place in the rink. With stunning choreography, Glory captures the tension and exhilaration of hockey, all while celebrating female empowerment in a time when women were pioneers in a man’s world.

JOYFUL NOISE OCT 16 - NOV 7

George Fredrick Handel’s Messiah is known for being one of the greatest religious compositions in history. What most do not know is that the making of the Messiah is just as miraculous as its music. Before Messiah, composer Handel was out of favor with the King, in debt, and had religious leaders accusing his work of being blasphemous. The famous actress singer who would be performing Handel’s work, Susannah Cibber, had the voice of an angel, but a destroyed reputation from having a child out of wedlock. Both lives seems ruined, but through the writing and performing of Messiah, both may find their own redemption.

ELF: THE MUSICAL NOV 20 - DEC 31

Just plain hilarious fun! Elf: The Musical is the tale of Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. Buddy is raised unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and his step-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.

DID YOU KNOW?

BEHIND THE MAKING OF THE MUSICAL THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES

These days, you can hardly walk into a regional theatre without being serenaded by the saccharine-sweet sounds of that ‘50s-and-‘60s girl group, The Marvelous Wonderettes. Their smash-hit musical topped the charts when it premiered in Los Angeles in 2006 and went on to a very successful Off-Broadway run in 2008. Along the way, the fabulous foursome has garnered many awards, a huge fan following, and even a holiday sequel (the merrily titled Winter Wonderettes). As the leader of this truly wonderful pack, Roger Bean (photo above) has taken his initial success with the “Wonderettes” brand and made a career out of turning fading oldies into rocking jukebox musicals. Bean had just opened his first show, Don’t Touch That Dial! at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. It was such a big hit that they immediately asked for another show the following year. While home visiting family in Seattle, his mother happened to bring out her college yearbook, and showed Bean some photos of her dressed as a cheerleader. She taught him the difference between a cheerleader and a songleader (she was a songleader, and so are the Wonderettes). She performed in the class talent show as part of a singing group in high school. According to Bean, he “had no idea she had a life before being my mother, of course—and so the Wonderettes became a show to honour her.” Bean was originally working with a limited backstage space when writing The Marvelous Wonderettes. He needed to create a script in which the actors could remain onstage for the majority of the show. Originally, when it was first produced in 1999, the show was only one act. Bean has grown the original show to its current two-act version. The addition of the second act allows for the character development to become fully realized as we meet four young women first in high school, and then a decade later at their reunion. Sources:

FUN FACT: Cheerleading originally consisted of only young men. In the 1930s, these young men were elected by the student body to be in charge of cheering and school spirit at sporting events. There were two positions available: the Yell Leader (or Cheer Leader), and the Song Leader. The Yell Leader performed tricks or antics on the field to get the crowd’s attention. The Song Leader lead spirited songs or chants, which he would sometimes write himself, and have the students sing.
