DIRECTOR’S NOTES Mark DUMEZ

“Foster’s writing is brisk, playful, nostalgic and deft.”

VA N C O U V E R

Hilda’s Yard has been a treat to produce. While working on this play, we have laughed and laughed in rehearsal, feeding off positive and comedic energy. Norm Foster’s writing is brisk, playful, nostalgic and deft. He allows the foibles and flaws of this fine family to come out, one by one, until there is nothing left to hold onto but one another. He sets the piece in 1956 and teases out the humour and heart of things that change but always stay the same – providing for kids as the price of bread rises, getting along in the backyard and sticking together through thick and thin. He also challenges us to examine if things have changed since the 50’s, especially when it comes to harder issues of hearth and home. I’ve learned a lot working on this piece and consider myself, in Hilda’s words, to be “so blessed” to bring it to life with such generous and colourful artists for a vibrant audience such as you!

MARK DUMEZ Director Mark is Artistic Director at CTF, where favourite roles include Murder on the Nile, Enchanted April, A Streetcar Named Desire, Mass Appeal, Animal Tales and the role of Prince Edward in Queen Milli of Galt. He had performed at Pacific Theatre, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, Theatre X and Firststage. He also works as a theatre director and is very pleased to be working with such a fine company of artists.

Norm Foster

“peer over the fence into Hilda’s Yard.” It’s a guaranteed good time at a Norm Foster performance. Canada’s most produced playwright tells stories that are meant to make people feel a little better about the world. And in his latest play, Foster gives us even more entertainment than usual as we peer over the fence into Hilda’s Yard. Foster’s plays are known for their over-the-top characters, litany of jokes, and vibrant settings that tell stories about ordinary people getting by in life. In our current production, his gifted style is enriched with thought-provoking plot points that touch on relationships, work ethic, domestic violence, post-traumatic stress, and mental illness – all addressed with love and laughter.

and the saddle shoe is a passé fashion, the show is not dependent on nostalgia for its entertainment value. In typical Foster style, these familiar experiences could happen to any one, at any time. We’re sure you’ll be hooked to see how everything will end for those who arrive in Hilda’s Yard. Thank you for joining us for this noteworthy Canadian performance and enjoy the show!

“his gifted style is enriched with thought-provoking plot points”

Set in a place and time of simplicity and wholesomeness, Foster’s day-in-the-life story of the Fluck household serves as a reminder that complex family dynamics are relevant in any decade. Although a loaf of bread no longer costs 18 cents,
