CHAIR OF THE SOCIETY BOARD OF DIRECTORS PAT MOORE Welcome to the third production of the 26th season of the Chemainus Theatre -- Kim’s Convenience! Winner of Best New Play and the Patron’s Pick Award at Toronto’s Fringe Festival, this work by Canadian actor and playwright Ins Choi entertains and amuses while it presents us with important social commentary.

Planning for the future of the Chemainus Theatre is a primary focus of our Board.

Kim faces the challenge of keeping his business moving forward as he ages and competition and family issues cloud the future. Planning for the future of the Chemainus Theatre is a primary focus of our Board. This year, having completed our 25th year celebrations, we are returning to a renewed planning process. Many of our targets and goals of the past plan were achieved. As we restart the process we are beginning again from these key commitments: • •

enriching Vancouver Island and advancing the arts through high quality and diverse artistic engagement engaging our patrons, volunteers, staff and community in dynamic relationship to participate and build the Chemainus Theatre Festival

We will continue to seek your input in how we stage and produce our leading main-stage and KidzPlay productions and educational programming such as the Discover Theatre Workshops. Since our beginnings in 1993 founded by philanthropist Ken Smith and LaVerne Erickson, to over 75,000 theatre-goers per season today, you have guided and supported us. Thank you and enjoy the show.

ARTIST DIRECTOR’S NOTES MARK DUMEZ

Producing this play has been extremely rewarding.

I am extremely excited to share the play that began Canada’s #1 Comedy on CBC with Vancouver Island! This immigrant story is told with honesty, heart-ache and lots of laughs. It began as a hit-of-the-fringe and soon went on to a national tour. I have been struck by how strong and universal a new work of theatre it is, and how the life of this tiny corner store resonates across Canada. The themes of the prodigal and faithful children, the parents who stand between two cultures and the reconciling of dreams have leaped off the page with a cast that is ready for anything. Producing this play has been extremely rewarding. I deeply appreciate the insight and artistry of author, Ins Choi - a creative spirit who has captured a Canadian immigrant family’s life with such clarity and love. While I could go on about his artistry, I’ve asked Andrea Cross, Chemainus Theatre Festival’s Education Coordinator and Associate Artist and long-time friend of Ins, to write a few words about him.

Pondering the creative projects I have collaborated on with Ins, three things stand out - Ins always strives for excellence, he is relentlessly driven, and he balances all of this out with his playfulness. Kim’s Convenience became what it is because of Ins’ drive. It was not an “overnight success” as many have described it, despite rocking the Canadian theatre world in 2011 at the Toronto Fringe Festival. It took seven years to write! Enjoy the show knowing that you are supporting the work of a true artist and the highest quality of human I have met. -- Andrea Cross--
