A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTORS Sometimes we look far and wide for shows for Chemainus. I was familiar with Northern Sky Theatre in Door County, Wisconsin from camping trips across the American Midwest. They specialize in making new musicals that are regionally specific, including a show that was produced all over North America – The Spitfire Grill. People in and around their community kept talking about this one show – Lumberjacks in Love. A juicy collection of fun, sentiment, and vaudeville, with a bit of Shakespeare’s 12th Night thrown in to boot. I was privileged to meet the original creators over the years – the late and immensely talented Fred Alley, whose quirky story and lyrics are so fun to speak and sing. More recently, James Kaplan, who set the show to music and spoke about its origins and Jeffery Herbst, who shared his insight into the making of new musicals. Years ago, while writing revues for the McLean Mill in Port Alberni, BC, I enjoyed wandering through the cabins, sawmill, and site which reminded me of a time gone by. Through the forest industry ties-ins, even though the trees are smaller in Wisconsin, I hoped that Lumberjacks would resonate with the Vancouver Island audience and chose this script to be designed, built and performed in our own Chemainus production. This show lightly plays with some pretty serious themes – self-identity, depression, parental loss – to name a few. The fun of it, though, is that the shanty life and culture allows for a haywire look at these realities – a really playful look. I am thankful that four resident artists have put their unique stamp on our production – James O’Leary’s colorful scenic design (he also built the set!) and Nicole Lamb’s lighting, John Han’s musical hall musical direction and Melissa Berger’s playful direction and choreography. Personally, I have had a blast working on the script and music for this show, enjoying the camaraderie of fellow artists on stage and telling this story. I hope you will enjoy it too. DIRECTOR’S NOTES “You want me to direct a show called Lumberjacks in Love?” I’ll admit—this was the first thought that went through my head after the offer came my way. After all, what could a young woman with extensive training in ballet who avoids the deep outdoors due to an intense insect bite allergy know about a group of lumberjacks? How could I possibly relate to this subject matter? With trepidation, I started my directorial process. Lumberjacks in Love is set in Wisconsin during the logging boom of the late nineteenth century. Men (and even some women) came from all over the US, Canada, and Europe to be a part of this burgeoning industry. Their lives were challenging to say the least. They worked gruelling hours of intense labour under inhospitable conditions. By most accounts, historical lumberjacks were tough, burley men who weren’t afraid of any challenges that came their way. However, at the core of Lumberjacks in Love is a group of folks who deviate from this one-sided depiction. Whether they long for love, fear their mortality, or search for their true identity, all of these characters are multi-faceted and do not neatly fit into a set stereotype. While there are plenty of laughs, gags, slapstick, and a few jigs throughout the piece, all of the characters in Lumberjacks in Love are driven by their hearts. They remind us that we are all individuals and as such, cannot simply be defined or judged by our job, or our interests, who we love, or how we choose to dress. So perhaps I shouldn’t have judged myself or this process so quickly. It has been a delight bringing this story to life and I now realize I actually have a lot more in common with this group of lumberjacks than I originally thought. I hope you find that you might too. Melissa Berger
Melissa is thrilled to be at the helm of this little wing-ding, Lumberjacks in Love. She has worked as both a director and choreographer for such companies as The Arts Club, Bard on the Beach, Carousel, Gateway Theatre, Pacific Theatre, and Western Canada Theatre. She would like to thank the amazing acting ensemble and production team for all of their work on this production.
