Million Dollar Quartet

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTES RANDAL HUBER What a pleasure to welcome Carl, Elvis, Johnny and Jerry Lee back to Sun Record Studios! Many in today’s audience will be seeing Million Dollar Quartet for the second or third time. If you’re seeing it for the first time today, you’ll soon see why so many are returning after attending here in 2016.

Sit back in your newly restored seat, unplug from the outside world, and enjoy the show!

Now before we get a whole lotta shakin’ goin on, I would like to take this opportunity to express thanks to a couple special groups of people. First, kudos to all those who stepped up and sponsored a seat in our Cheeky Silver Anniversary Seat Campaign. A total of 190 seats in the theatre, including the entire centre section, were sponsored and have now been refurbished. So, at intermission have a peak on the bottom of your seat and you’ll know who to thank for providing a cushy spot to enjoy the show. Second, I’ll throw the spotlight to our corporate sponsors; businesses who recognize the vitality that the arts add to our quality of life and support us financially. Chemainus Theatre’s sponsors are recognized in this program and we ask that whenever possible please support these incredible businesses. The productions that we stage would not exist without their crucial backing. And finally, thank you for supporting the arts by attending today’s production. Sit back in your newly restored seat, unplug from the outside world, and enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR’S NOTES MARK DUMEZ

Rockabilly is a uniquely Southern infusion that went on to shape music all over the world.

In my early 20’s, I had the joy of sampling tastes of the American South for the better part of two years. I worked on a mask show, painted houses, and trained in theatre in and around Nashville - one of the most unique experiences of my life – and I journeyed to other parts including Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It all had a life-long impact and informed my artistry in many facets. Something about the heat, the flavor, and the spirit of the place is entirely unique in North America and seems to stew a special kind of creativity. In this stew you find writers like Harper Lee and Flannery O’Connor, Antebellum architecture and simple homes born of poverty, and spicy Cajun flavours in the crawfish and gumbo. In the musical realm, rockabilly is a uniquely Southern infusion that went on to shape music all over the world. This blend of blues, gospel, folk, and other elements had its origin in the place we will visit in this show – Sun Record Studio, Memphis, Tennessee; an entire world of sound and personality that influenced a generation sprung from this small storefront. The recipe for this musical jambalaya is part sun drenched soil, a helping of wild spirit and a few quarts of good ole’ boy fun. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

Mark has served as Artistic Director at the Chemainus Theatre Festival since 2009, where directing credits include Silent Sky, Elf: the Musical, Hilda’s Yard, Mousetrap, Ring of Fire, Amadeus, A Shayna Maidel, Harvest, Christmas Carol, Jeeves in Bloom and Jeeves Take a Bow.
