Since our inaugural performance on June 24th 1993, these chairs have played their role for over 7,000 performances. Now in our 25th season, over 1.3 million people have enjoyed dramas, musicals, comedies and mysteries. That’s a lot of bottoms, and as one would expect the seats are in need of some TLC!

These venerable chairs still have lots of life left in them. In fact, we think that by replacing the internal cushioning, these chairs may well last another 25 years. The mechanics and structural parts are in good condition and with some spot repairs – the upholstery is fine.

A charitable donation of $225 will sponsor restoration of one of our theatre chairs, while $425 will restore a pair of chairs. Your gift provides vital support to the theatre and will be recognized by a personalized silver plaque affixed to the bottom of each seat that you sponsor. As most chairs were initially sponsored in 1993, the plaque for the restoration will be mounted right below the original. Your name will also appear on the campaign seating chart in the lobby.

Patrons wishing to sponsor a seat or seats, can pick up donation forms from our lobby display, through Box Office, or by contacting Development 250.246.9800 Ext. 724 Charitable Tax Number 140012428RR0001

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTES RANDAL HUBER As the curtain rises on Silent Sky, our fall dramatic classic, we have much to be thankful for in our 25th anniversary season of professional theatre. Reaching a 25th season is a triumphant milestone in the world of theatre and there are so many people that deserve recognition for helping bring us to this point.

Our work is made possible by a circle of support that cradles the theatre.

For starters, thank you to our dedicated, brilliant core of staff & volunteers and the 150 theatre artists that we contract each season. Collectively, we stretch for the highest possible artistic standards and strive to present a top-notch professional Chemainus Theatre Experience: live theatre, casual dining and fine art & gift gallery. Our work is made possible by a circle of support that cradles the theatre. It includes you - the amazing audience, the town of Chemainus and the supportive communities of the Cowichan region, and the generous donors and sponsors (listed in this program). As Brent Dellebuur, season sponsor Duncan Iron Works, states “if we don’t support the arts they will simply go away.” Thanks to all of this support, the Chemainus Theatre has stood the test of time, become one of the largest theatre companies in British Columbia and continues to reach new heights. Our summer musical Rock Legends set a new sales record with 25,349, eclipsing the previous record held by South Pacific since 2008. Now as we gaze upward at the stars with Henrietta Leavitt in Silent Sky we do so with great anticipation, dreaming of all that is to come.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES MARK DUMEZ I’ve been looking forward to producing this play in our 2017 season ever since I saw it a couple years ago in Seattle at Taproot Theatre. It is curious, smart, immensely human and has wonderful roles for actors.

Through watching and playing in make-believe worlds, we can expand our sense of self, explore our relation to others, and discover new ideas

Playwright Lauren Gunderson examines our physical and spiritual relation to each other, our sense of scope and perspective and our measures of time, space, love and light. She peers at this wide and diverse universe through the lens of Henrietta Swan Leavitt, whose exemplary persistence and determination to discover a universe and perspective beyond her own immediate understanding led to great discoveries. Theatre aspires to examine relations and perspectives for the community and the individual. Through watching and playing in make-believe worlds, we can expand our sense of self, explore our relation to others, and discover new ideas. This play asks a lot of questions and offers some surprising answers. In doing so, it invites us to consider great mysteries of light in darkness, love in life and asks - how big is our sky today? Mark is a proud resident of Vancouver Island and has enjoyed directing Jeeves Takes a Bow, Hilda’s Yard, Falling: A Wake, Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves in Bloom, A Pretty Girl (A Shayna Maidel), Ring of Fire, The Mousetrap, Elf: The Musical, The 39 Steps and Amadeus for Chemainus Theatre. Other favourites include: A Christmas Carol, Strindberg’s Easter, Anne, Mr. Pim Passes By and Pet the Fish. He has collaborated with companies including Theatre X, Pacific Theatre and TheatreOne to develop over a dozen new plays. Favourite acting credits include: Harvey, Mass Appeal, Enchanted April, Queen Milli of Galt and Streetcar Named Desire.
