ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE On the face of it, the premise of this classic comedy is pretty simple – fake it till you make it. And it’s a funny show that has endured over 35 years. The characters are well drawn, the dialogue is snappy, the actors have lots of room to play and the situation rises to comedic extremes. However, beneath this well drawn and simple premise, like most enduring comedies, deeper roots are found. Each character has hidden potential which has yet to be discovered. These potentials range from generous to deeply sinister and it takes Charlie’s disturbance in their community to uncover each one. Through revealing each new surprise, the people of Tilghman County are asked how they will treat the foreigner in their community. Do they invite them in, maintain historic prejudice, or find ways to transform? Playwright Larry Shue takes us to some light and some very dark places – all of which have resonance decades later. I am thankful to have this show in our 2019 Season, for its laughter and its invitation to consider a community’s relationship to the foreigner. Mark DuMez

A FAMILY DRAMA
ON STAGE THE AWARD WINNING COMEDY THE FOREIGNER The foundation for Larry Shue’s The Foreigner is simple and charming in a way that endears it to even those who may not typically enjoy a comedy. Sergeant “Froggy” LeSueur has arranged a three day mini vacation at the humble Betty Meeks’ Fishing Lodge in Tilghman County, Georgia, for his painfully shy friend, Charlie Baker. Froggy intends to offer a respite to his companion.
Things go awry from the moment they arrive. The combination of stressful timing, Charlie’s extreme social phobia, and his belief that he is utterly boring and lacking personality leads the faithful Froggy to concoct a desperate plan to get Charlie to stay. Froggy explains to those in the lodge that Charlie is a foreigner who speaks absolutely zero English. And from here, comedy ensues.
Instead of leaving the socially awkward Charlie alone, as the good intentioned Froggy assumed, the lodge’s occupants make Charlie their confidant—with hilarious results.
Betty Meeks, the grand issue of an inheritance, and many more surprises. Shue has packed a lot of plot into his two-act play that you won’t want to miss out on!
This comedy offers the kind of genuine amusement that absurd silliness can provide when portrayed well. Charlie progresses from an awkward wallflower lacking confidence to a hero who spoils the evil plots of the villains. Betty can be found frequently yelling loudly at her “foreigner” guest to make her English understood. There is also an unwanted pregnancy, a conspiracy to scam the lodge from widow
Sit back, relax, and be entertained as Charlie finds himself in increasingly complicated predicaments, and desperately “learns English” in order to stop the evil villains in this plot. Shue’s play is not only sidesplitting humour, but gives us food for thought as it reminds us that our all-toohuman foibles, follies, and frailties can make us endearing as well as initiate inspiring personal transformations.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES I’ve always thought of this play as a bit of a fairy-tale or fable – not that the situations presented aren’t real (they are all too real these days), but Larry Shue’s farce features larger than life characters – a cast of good guys that you’ll fall in love with and bad guys who you’ll want to boo. Our design team drew inspiration from Wes Anderson’s films to create our own quirky and colourful world. Although this play might seem silly and more than a little absurd, I believe it can encourage us to dig a little deeper too. Through humour and witty writing, Shue’s script points to some challenges of our time and it might stir up some questions – even in your own heart. Who have you overlooked recently? Where might transformation occur? What dreams have you stuffed away, where can reconciliation happen, where can you move from death to life? Big questions. Fortunately, they are served up via the best medicine – laughter. I hope you enjoy.

BEHIND THE SCENES AN INTERVIEW WITH SET DESIGNER JESSICA OOSTERGO What brought you to set design as your career? I have always loved various forms of fine arts and excelled at them in high school. In grade 11 I was given the opportunity to take a stagecraft course, building the set and costumes for the drama students yearly show, and loved the idea of using my artistic skills to create visuals I had imagined after reading a script. The teacher of the class suggested I apply to Studio 58, a professional theatre program in Vancouver. I was accepted into the production program after going through an intense audition, interview, and entrance project. I went to Studio 58 thinking that I wanted to be a set designer, and came out a set and costume designer, mask and puppet builder, painter, carpenter, seamstress, and much more.
What is the first step in your design process? The first step is to read the script! To get to know the needs of the show, and develop some ideas that are inspired by the writing. Then, most importantly, I meet with the director to talk about their vision and concept. Is there any specific style or aesthetic that you tend to look for in the work that you choose to design? I love avante garde and experimental theatre. Pushing the envelope with designs that transform and surprise an audience throughout the show. But what is exciting about my career is that I work on all kinds of performances. In one year I could design a traditional Shakespeare production, a zombie show, murder mystery, a classic Disney tale, a children’s show, a 40’s musical, etc. The constant challenge of working
on completely different pieces is what also keeps this work exciting. What drew you to The Foreigner? I was excited about The Foreigner because I knew right away that it would be a chance to design a fairly big box set, which I haven’t had many opportunities to do so far in my career. I read the script and loved that the subject matter was relevant, and that the writing also had potential for a fun amount of comedy. I then found out that Kaitlin Williams would be directing the show, a multidisciplinary artist that I love to collaborate with, and I knew that I would love to design for the project! Is there any particular feature you want the audience to notice? The details. The quirks. The small bits that pull the larger space together.
Can you tell us a bit about the collaboration process? Who all is involved in making a set come together? It starts with myself and the Director researching and gathering images and going over ideas. Then I would create a preliminary 2D and 3D drawing of the set and it is sent to the Technical Director and Production Manager to see if the ideas are possible for the space, and to budget out the costs of materials. At this point I would also work on a scale model of the set that helps to show what the paint treatment would look like, and also gives us another interesting 3D view. Once all of the drawings are approved, they are handed over to the Carpenter to start building, and then the Scenic Painter takes over. Finally, the set is completed with help from the props department as it becomes filled with set dressing and props. With The Foreigner, the set dressing plays a huge part of the overall look.
What is the biggest challenge in designing this set? The challenge was definitely figuring out how to arrange the space based on all of the furniture needs of the show. Also filling the wall space and finding interesting, quirky, detailed set dressing. What is your favorite aspect of set design? I love model building but it is also very time consuming! Adding set decoration is also an exciting part of the process because it really helps to bring the set to life and can really transform the walls of the space. From where did you draw inspiration for this set? Wes Anderson was a big inspiration. He often uses clean but intricate lines, and has interesting colour schemes. We specifically looked at the colour scheme from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I also sourced many different images of old fishing lodges, lakeside cabins, and hotels from the 70s-90s. How true is the final set to the ideas you get during or right after the play reading? The script calls for some very specific set pieces and furniture. For example, the trap in the floor, the staircase, the front door, couches, tables and chairs etc. The challenge became fitting everything in to suit the space in Chemainus. We wanted to try and create an intimate feeling while still incorporating all of the set dec required for the show. The placement was tweaked a lot, but the overall idea of the space did not change too much as there is only so much flexibility with a show like this that has such a specific setting.
Jessica is pleased to be designing in Chemainus once again! Recent credits include designs for Marine Life (Ruby Slippers), Jesus Freak (Pacific Theatre), The Troll Grandfather (Axis Theatre), Little Women (Chemainus Theatre Festival), So, How Should I Be? (Presentation House Theatre), and All My Friends are Animals (Babelle Theatre). Jessica has worked as a mask/costume builder on The Magicians (NBC/Universal), and recently costumed local commercials and music videos including I Knew You When (Mariana’s Trench). Jessica is a Jessie Richardson Award winner, the Assistant Head of Wardrobe at Bard on the Beach, and a member of the Associated Designers of Canada. She is also a core member of the Vancouver Design Forum, and a graduate of Studio 58. Visit www.jessicaoostergo.com!
