MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTES RANDAL HUBER Rama-lama-lama, ka-dinga da ding-dong! Believe it or not, it’s the 40th anniversary of the movie Grease. Grease stirs happy, nostalgic memories for me. It was the first drive-in movie I attended and remember jockeying with my brother for the best spot to hear the tiny metal speaker hanging from my dad’s window. Whether this is your first Chemainus Theatre visit or you never miss a show, we’re so thankful that you’ve joined us today!
Sit back in your newly restored seat, unplug from the outside world, and enjoy the show!
VA N C O U V E R
This show is the culmination of a year-long, intensive process that began last spring with the negotiation of rights, and then ramped up with creative development by the design team. The building of the set kicked into high gear in March, followed closely by costumes. All of our shows are fully professional and the whole host of amazing talent, contracted from across Canada, converged on Chemainus four weeks prior to opening, to rehearse and bring the script to life. The Chemainus Theatre is a not-for-profit registered charity, as are all Canadian theatres from the smallest to the largest – like the Shaw Festival or Stratford. We draw about 75,000 theatregoers per season and are the 3rd largest professional theatre in British Columbia – the largest outside Vancouver. The Theatre continues to flourish because of you - the wonderfully supportive and engaged audience. Thank you for attending and we hope you leave here today humming one of the show’s iconic tunes and eagerly looking forward to your next Chemainus Theatre experience.

ARTIST DIRECTOR’S NOTES MARK DUMEZ
The 50’s are back, and we can’t wait to see you there!
Welcome to the 1950’s and the Chemainus Theatre Festival’s rendition of Grease, with all the songs, saddle shoes, duck tails and bubble gum you love! What really sold me on this show was an undertone I had never considered until reading and discussing it a little more. In Grease, we encounter a fundamental teenage conumdrum: trying to fit in while striving to be unique. Both Sandy and Danny are caught up in conflicting expectations. Sandy struggles to fit in with the values of commercial appearance and behaviors while Danny wrestles with the demands of the rebellious counter-culture. Whether it’s doing what your parents want – or what they don’t want – teenagers coming of age can find themselves in a bind between expectations. Through the action of the play and the loosening of those expectations, Sandy and Danny step toward each other to find new truths. Danny tries to move out of a macho role for awhile in order to woo Sandy, as Sandy finds a way to embrace a new strength in her own voice and personality by shedding 1950’s consumer culture constraints. These are earnest acts of empathy and, let’s face it, teenage love and angst that stretch them both. They learn from each other and at the same time, transform into more of their ‘true selves’. This generous look at the challenges of growing up and finding one’s own voice, along with all the fun, cars and burgers that go along with it, is a special part of what makes Grease a musical phenomenon across the globe. Thanks to the talented cast and crew who have realized this show on our stage – right here in Chemainus. Enjoy!

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BARBARA TOMASIC How long has it been since you were in high school or had a summer love? For some of you, it’s happening now, and for others it’s a distant memory. In Grease, we are going back to 1959. TV was the new influencer of dreams, advertising was taking off and showing people they could have the hottest car, the newest fashion, or be like their favourite celebrity; kind of like the internet today...except much slower.
“Grease is the time, is the place is the moment, and Grease is the way we are feeling.”
The kids at Rydell High all have dreams of love, glamour, and freedom. Doody wants to be a rock star, Marty to be Grace Kelly, and Sandy and Danny just want to be free to be who they really are. Grease the movie came out when I was a little girl, and my parents wouldn’t let me see it because it was too risqué. That only made it even more desirable and when, at age 13, I saw it at a pajama party with my girlfriends, I became obsessed. I loved the era, the music and the fashion, but what I loved most was the celebration of young people and their independence. They were rebellious and free, and joyful – and to me that was everything. My hope is that this musical reminds you of your first love, your first car, and your gang of best friends.
Barbara is thrilled to be returning to Chemainus after directing Footloose and The Cornwalls’ All Inclusive Cancun Christmas. She is a graduate of UBC with a MFA in Directing and JIPA with a diploma in theatre performance and has played Maria in the Sound of Music, Anna in The King and I and Cathy in the Canadian Premiere of The Last Five Years. Favourite directing credits include 42nd Street (Studio 58); Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, Crybaby, The Music Man, Crazy for You (Gateway Theatre); and Hannah Moscovitch’s Little One (UBC). So excited to be working with the amazing Julie Tomaino again. Love!

Peter and Corinne
de Lange Proud Sponsor of Grease
was first performed in 1971 in the original Kingston Mines nightclub in Chicago. American playwrights Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey created that original production as a raunchy, raw, aggressive, and vulgar show, intended to shake things up with its shock value. The Broadway version was much less aggressive, becoming the musical we now know and love; an homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of the ages-old youthful urge to be rebellious and provocative. While the language and action are toned down, the underlying themes of the original play are there; love, friendship, peer pressure, rebellion, and class conflict all couched in rollicking 50’s rock, energetic dancing, fight stunts, biting one-liners, and comedic gags. Grease is a romp back in time but remains relevant to our contemporary concerns, handling with a light touch, such controversial social issues as gang violence, sexual exploration, teen pregnancy, and the impacts rampant consumerism has on our cultural values. All the best plays provoke thought as much as laughter and Grease is certainly ranked among the best! The Broadway production opened Feb. 14, 1972 and won nine Tony awards, including Best Musical. At the time it closed on Broadway, Grease had seen 3,388 performances, making it the longest running Broadway show at that time. It went on to become a West End hit, a successful feature film in 1978 featuring John Travolta and Oliva Newton-John, and enjoyed two popular Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007. You may have seen the original Broadway production or you may have seen the movies; now, we invite you bop back in time and enjoy Grease in all its flashy choreography, adrenaline pumping fight stunts, and heartfelt exuberance! The True Story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the Worst Singer in the World By
Peter QUILTER
“This delightful and blissfully funny play generates a rare glow of warmth and generous laughter.” – Daily Telegraph Glorious premiered on London’s West End in 2005, winning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best New Comedy. This hilarious true story has no played on stages in over 40 countries and 27 languages!
Caitlynn Miller and Jacob Woike
David Cooper Photography
Fearless, fading diva Florence Foster Jenkins was more bubbly and endearing than talented, but she enjoyed astronomical success. During World War II, the amateur singer and flamboyant socialite was the squeaky soprano du jour, singing her way into the hearts of New York society. Among her admirers were composer Cole Porter, operatic tenor Enrico Caruso, and English conductor Sir Thomas Beecham. But she was a terrible singer! Known as ‘the first lady of the sliding scale’, Jenkins’ vocal skills may have left somewhat to be desired, but she was uniquely gifted; it’s impossible not to be moved by her capacity to hear beauty and perfection where others heard only a cringe-worthy bray. Her charm lies somewhere between Norma Desmond and Lucille Ball. Jenkins was surrounded by her devoted friends, who were almost as eccentric as she was. When she presented a series of concerts, they loudly cheered, drowning out the laughter of those who didn’t appreciate her enthusiastic joyful noise. The tempo and rhythms of the play’s action lend themselves to the hilarity of the jokes and the dialogue’s linguistic confusion.
