Membership brings you closer to the world of theatre you love, and helps us reach new heights. It puts you at the very front of the line and allows you to connect deeper with the world of Chemainus Theatre. The Theatre is a not for profit charity and we rely on the generous support of donors and sponsors to help cover the cost of programming. Please see our website for more information. Thank you for attending today. It’s wonderful to wrap our season with this production of Miracle on 34th Street. We hope you treasure it as much as we have producing it. It’s a show full of Christmas tradition, hope, faith, reconciliation and believing in things that common sense tells you not so. Plus, it features a bigger than life Santa Clause; or is he only a nice man with a white beard? Randal Huber
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES Welcome to the Chemainus Theatre Festival and thanks to all of you who have been an exciting part of our 2019 season. This particular time of year can be a wonderful time to try and see the world through the eyes of a child, like Susan, in this show. Despite adult’s best efforts to force conformity, champion common sense or push consumerism, kids at this time often hope and see with different senses. They can remind those of us rushing around that love can be a simple moment, that faith lets us believe in things we may not be able to test or see, that hope makes waiting sweet and that joy wants to be shared as widely and wonderfully as we can. The winning adults in Miracle on 34th Street find ways to see with the eyes of child, and the children lead them. Thank you for taking part in this season in Chemainus. For your willingness to support the arts, to come together in a room and take part in shared story, and to celebrate the holidays. We couldn’t do it without you and we wish you all the best now and into the New Year! Mark DuMez
DIRECTOR’S NOTES Why does this story matter now? That’s one of the questions I always ask when I set out to direct any play. With Miracle on 34th Street I know there are a few answers. It is a beloved film, and many of you in the audience grew up watching it. We love such iconic, nostalgic movies. Seeing them performed live on stage is irresistible. I’m also sure that many of you are attending with your family - perhaps continuing a tradition of seeing a Chemainus show together during this season. But apart from tradition and nostalgia, what is it that makes Miracle on 34th Street such an enduring story? I believe its power is summed up in Fred’s encouragement to Doris: “faith is believing in things when common sense tells you not to”. At its core, the play encourages us all to let our hearts take the lead, rather than our heads. We are asked to risk a bit more, to allow the child in all of us to believe in something irrational and to dream bigger than we thought possible. Stories like this are precious in a world that feels increasingly cynical and perilous. So we tell the story again with the hope that something is sparked in you during the performance. We have tried to honour the original, while adding fresh theatricality and feeling. I thought a lot about you, the audience, in rehearsal and in all the preparation that preceded it. This story is a carefully wrapped gift from our team to you. Kaitlin Williams
Kaitlin loves the island and is glad to be back in Chemainus after directing The Foreigner here last spring. Other recent directing credits include Mother of the Maid, Kim’s Convenience and Almost, Maine (Pacific Theatre) as well as Suitcase Stories (Evergreen Theatre). ON STAGE
THE CHRISTMAS CLASSIC, MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET There are several versions behind the mythology of Kris Kringle. He has other names: Santa Claus, Father Christmas, and St. Nicholas, to name a few. While there are versions of St. Nicholas’ story, and debate about which version is true, it is agreed that he was the original inspiration behind the “Santa Claus” phenomenon that we know today. A common version of St. Nicholas was that he was a wealthy Bishop who lived in the fourth century, in what is now known as Turkey. He was a kind and humble man who had a reputation for helping the poor and giving secret gifts to people who needed them. While he begged those he helped not to tell anyone, as he didn’t want any attention, news got out. Due to his kindness, he was made into a Saint. After the reformation in Europe, the myths that had come to surround St. Nicholas were no longer popular, but the traditions had to be kept alive—someone had to deliver presents to children at Christmas time. In England, he became “Father Christmas” or “Old Man Christmas.” In France: Père Noël. In Germany and parts of Austria: “Christkind”, to symbolize the new born baby Jesus. In the United States of America, where our story takes place, his name was “Kris Kringle.” Different parts of the world debate some of the finer points of the Santa Claus myth, but a few details hold true no matter where you are in the world, such as he travels on his sleigh pulled by reindeer. He comes down the chimney at night and delivers presents in front of the trees or in stockings. Most importantly, he brings smiles and jolly Christmas cheer.

ANNOUNCING OUR 2020 SEASON We at the Chemainus Theatre Festival are pleased to announce our 2020 Season – a year of celebrating theatre that explores and nourishes the human spirit. We are excited to enrich the region with three musicals this season – a fun and carefree sing through the 50’s and 60’s, a marquee summer musical that has delighted for over 20 years and a returning holiday classic that sold out so quickly the first time, we just had to do it again! We look forward to advance our artistry with an all-Canadian creation that celebrates women in sports and a classic drama that recounts the making of Handel’s Messiah. And we will build community with a Broadway classic that romps through a Hitchcock masterpiece with style and with our Kidplay show, drawing families together with a silly old bear and his friends. Producing Island-made theatre in a seaside town for another season is an exciting prospect and we repeatedly hear from first-time patrons that they can’t believe this quality of professional theatre can be found right in little old Chemainus. Along with the custom made shows on stage, we look forward to delighting you in the Playbill Dining Room and Gallery Gift Shop to complete your Chemainus Theatre Festival Experience.
