LUISM architecture+ environment = urban life

My philosophy is simple, like any classic formulae proven enduring years. Learning from research and cooperation, a good urban designer keeps the balance between human needs and nature, able to design lifestyles in urban context.

The east of site loactes East Garden called “natural oxygen bar” and Couple Garden recognized as a world cultural legacy by UNESCO. There are three horizontal rivers flow through our research site, also combined with countless historic alleys and Homogeneous space. Except Pingjianglu Road for commerce, almost all the site are used as resident area. Olds are the major constitution of our site and Suzhou traditional space pattern and social cultural atmosphere still alive in this place. It is the sign of city transition, the living fossil of traditional city life. Our memory and common recognition are diffused from every brick and tile.

Water-alley pattern is not clear in ancient city any more, new functions filled into ancient city, which makes the city over burdened. Disabled in both preservation and development.

Development of Water Space

In history, rivers compatiated with roads and constitute a rhythm of Bridge - Quay - RiverAlley. Now the riverways have been silted up and landfilled. The formulation of tradition faded away.

Vigor of Street

Suzhou’s neighborhood relationship is fluent in history. All the residential activity conducted by rich street space, such as well, bridge, temple and quay. Now most of the things are gone and streets are deserted

Livable City & Space of Disaster Prevention

Suzhou in history is livable and lively. There are vast field in North and South city for development. Now the ancient city has stucked with disordered buildings and various traffic. The land is over-used.

Ecological & Green Strategy

Traditional houses are well made for ventilation and lighting. This method create a condition warm in winter and cool in summer. With tree plant ing made the city emerced in a green ocean.

Petersburg locates in the Southeast portion in Virginia, served as an important transportation hub and gateway in Chesapeake Bay Area. With the rise of high-way and private vehicle, Petersburg lost its identity as it was in history. What is the potential character in future Petersburg? I believe it is the first question we need toanswer before we can take any action and planning method to the city. Suburban and city sprawl create the chance for us to study about the adjacent cities near Petersburg. A regional city concept can help us identify the different characters of the cities in the Richmond Metropolitan Region, especially to understand the personality of Petersburg. Based on the community profile prepared by Virginia Employment Commission, the research at this phase is to discover how the river system, ultimodal transportation and the collaboration of the tri-cities as well as Richmond could influence Petersburg.

Walking Map Research The city strikes me at the ďŹ rst glance. Delicate duplex, marble city hall, well formatted city grid.. Everything is just so perfect to be a great city. However, no people is enjoying this city. Streets are vacant, stores are closed, serious democratic problem is killing this place. We walked around, saw a lot, hear a lot. This graphic note shows my experience of the city, trying to understand the spatial relationship among the featured places, also seeking a way tocure Petersburg.

Halifax Triangle

Locates at the new developent area in Petersburg, Halifax Trangle plays as an important gateway to welcome people into old towne Petersburg. Also appreciated by the fabulous architecture in Halifax, the area also plays as an messanger to the visitors about Aferican American’s history.

Halifax Triangle is formed by five African American historic churches, one elder people care center, eight single family houses and limited numbers of retail shops. Most of the land is in vacancy and used as temporary surface parking. As the most important entrance corridor to historic downtown and the new transit hub, Halifax triangle carries a lot of commitments to play as the key to city revitalization. The rich history in African American civic life, a high percentage of young people (30%) and extremely low literacy (60%) make me focus on the design for the millennial in the city. This design proposal starts from a study of what the millennial want, where the millennial go and how the millennial get there to understand what Halifax Triangle can provide to young people. New programs such as commercial+ cultural mixed corridor, playgrounds, Loft office buildings, business incubator are identified in the study area.

For a limited financial support from city government and local religious organizations, the design strategy is highly based on time, with simple, affordable but efficient idea to make the change happen, creating the real “people’s oasis”. Here are the design phases: Phase 1: Set the stage. One skater field, one rolling park and a bike-friendly street will be created, which serve as a catalyst for the young people get together. Phase 2: Create basic structure. Historic facades, shade structure will be created. With the help of pro bono service construction companies (Pathways Va., Restoration of Petersburg Community Development Corp.), the investment will be affordable. For the efficient function to complete street and new function, the facade and shade structure will serve as the most important landmark in the site. Phase 3: Private investment into new programs. Based on the prediction, 5 years will give the site enough time to have population and serves as a real “People’s Oasis” in Petersburg. The private investors will be seeking opportunities to plug-in into the site. A future design will happen in two places: one is behind historic facades, functioning as big retailing stores, another one is within the shade structure, functioning as small recreation programs. At this phase, the Halifax Triangle will totally turn into a populous open ground for all the people.

VERTICAL URBANISM By the 2050s, ocean waters are expected to be 2.5 feet higher than current levels. 100-year storm could produce a storm surge 5 feet greater than the city experienced with Hurricane Sandy -- the October 2012 "superstorm" that sent a record-setting 14 feet tide into Lower Manhattan.

wind turbine

What is the future city looks like? Grow vertically, bring millions of people from the ground to the sky and live in huge living machine. The proposition of this design is to test-fit if a skycraper can be considered as a vertical city and accommodate more than 10,000 people in it. Ideal future is real. The design calls for an understanding of zoning of the city, and flip it up as a new identification of future zoning- a way to erase the rigidness and frame of today’s land zoning, free the idea and promote the real mixed- use in this vertical city.

No matter of sunny or rainy, cold or hot, this place seems so magic, which can attract so many people, who are varied by different social characters: tourists for travel, staff for lunch, residents for a evening walk, and lovers for a long dating road. People are facinated by the elevated bridge, connected so smoothy without any stop. A higher than ground level itself is unique in this congested city.

Vertical Metro Serve Community

The design is structured as a planning project. Like a city, but grow vertically. Based on this theory, zoning strategy and public transportation system are laid out as important issues for the development of this new vertical territory. However, the advantage of vertical growth avoids the rigid property of zoning, the 3-D zoning idea shows a double layered territory can involve with each other and share different land use, seamlessly connect work to live, and create various of life choices. A vertical metro system is also an important structure to support the 10,000 people community alive. Connecting to the New York Metro system, the metro line extends vertically and leads to the hierarchy system of vertical metro. The system is combined by two main cables and four secondary commute lines. The last but not least, design asks for a recall of primitive life. For the sea level rise, the earth people familiar with will change dramatically in the future, how to preserve the connection of earth and people, while pursing more space from sky? A historic barn is designed and centered in the bottom level vertical park, reminding people of the past. The barn also plays as a metro station and exhibition space.

STORIES OF IVY ROAD: FOUND OBJECTS - PORTRAITS - CONVERSATIONS In order to “tell the story” of one such place in Charlottesville – a commercial stretch of Ivy Road just west of the university – a team of fifteen University of Virginia students and two faculty created a full-scale architectural installation that revealed layers of cultural life through a visceral display of found artifacts. The project, which also blended photographs and recordings of street life along Ivy Road, was displayed at the Jefferson School City Center in Charlottesville in January 2015.
