Preface I consider the fascination of landscape design lies in the diversity of its scope. From large-scale planning to small-scale space design, I could challenge my thinking capability and creative thinking in different phases. I deem the value of design lies in making the world better. In my eyes, landscape is constructed from the relations among the whole creation, which involve, for instance, the relationships between people and people, people and the environment, and creatures and creatures. These relations compose our environment and future. The job of landscape designer is to endeavor in having these relations reach a balance and harmonious state for creating a better and more beautiful world. The followings are the works I created in different phases in Department of Landscape Architecture, FJU. Welcome to my world!

Fu Jen Catholic University Kindergarten Design

Date: April, 2012 Location: Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan Adviser: Huang, Wen-Shan

Fu Jen Catholic University Kindergarten, founded for 38 years to date, is located at a placid and tranquil corner in the campus. It provides daycare services for the community and faculty. As it’s already age-old and the facilities are outdated, with the intention of renovating the space of the kindergarten, FJU collaborates with the Department of Landscape Architecture in hopes of transforming the kindergarten via the ideas and creativity of the design majors so as to provide children a cozier, livelier, and freer playground. Designed on the concept of paper airplanes, different heights are created in the children’s space through the notion of origami to have children observe the environment from different altitudes when they are moving about. The space with changeful creases creates a variety of activity spaces and fashions for children to challenge their physical abilities.

Dan-Feng District Neighborhood Park Planing & Design Date: January, 2013 Location: Danfeng District, New Taipei City, Taiwan Adviser: Chang, Wei-Ju Partner: Fu Xuan

Based on the theory of geomantic omen, due to its geographic condition, since the ancient time, Dan-Feng district, located in New Taipei City, has symbolized wealth and honor as the scenery of Taipei basin could be viewed from the location. The words Dan and Feng each represent valued flower, peony and bird, phoenix. The grandeur of Dan-Feng is even highly praised as “The first mountain of the world with two phoenixes facing the peony. Nonetheless, nowadays, gradually, nearly no one is aware of such a story. Merely the inscription craved on a stele at the mountain foot has recorded the story, and Dan-Feng is currently no more than a place name. The origin of a place name is also a part of the precious land story. We attempt to preserve the story of this place in the past at the Dan-Feng park.

The large altitude difference of the cross-section in the riverside space disconnects people from water.

Slopes and stairs could alleviate the height difference in the waterfront space.

The main building in the site is too high, which results in a sense of oppression in the space.

The sense of oppression brought by tall buildings could be reduced by growing plants densely in the site.

With no pavement (pedestrian arcade) on the path to school, as children have to walk close to vehicles, it causes dangers.

The pavement to school is designed in the site for children.

The Memory of Play: The Landscape Deconstruction of the memory of Land The Reuse Plan of the Taipei Municipal Children’s Amusement Center Date: June, 2013 - June, 2014 Location: Zhongshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan Adviser: Lin, Jiann-Cherng Partner: Tseng, Wei-Hua

Taipei Municipal children’s recreation center was built in 1934. For so long it has been playing the unreplaceable role of childhood memory for so many people. It’s the land full of laughter and joy. However, with the changes of the times, as the environment conditions in the children’s amusement park limits the renewal of the hardware facility, gradually, the recreational facilities in the children’s amusement park could no longer satisfy the recreational requirements of urban citizens. As Taipei city government decided to build a new children’s amusement park at another place, this children’s amusement park was formally closed down. The course that this land which is full of memories and stories would take in the future is the issue that we shall probe into. Our target is to continue in writing the next page of the story for this land.

The era of Yuanshan culture site is about 3000 to 2000 from now. In the past, Taipei basin was a large lake. The shell mound was the greatest feature of Yuanshan culture site. Preserving a great deal of shells, animal bones, fish bones after eaten as well as all sorts of potteries, stones, and horns, it belongs to the late prehistoric culture of the Neolithic Age.

Project Purpose Children’s amusement park carries lots of joyful memories. We have decided to reserve these memories. Additionally, after realizing the story of this piece of land from the past to present, we have further resolved to glorify its spirit of place. We would turn this amusement park into a play museum. In the future, we could return here to perceive the trace of previous joyful memories. At the same time, we could also experience the plays in different eras here. We would also exhaust the education obligation in preserving the prehistoric civilization here, and bring the education of prehistoric culture into our planning.

Concept : Museum / Memory Of Play Deconstructing the Land Memory

Phase 1. Preserving the trace of playing on this land.

Phase 2. Exhibiting the prehistory culture of this land.

Phase 3. Setting PLAY as the theme of the landscape museum to exhibit PLAY that belongs to different period to date.

11

Analysis of PLAY We would disguss what play is and the changes of play by means of research a nalysis as the basis of planning the museum of play.

3.

Four periods of PLAY The Primitive society

1.

What is PLAY?

5.

We definite play as “a situational transfer with positive effects”. In the process of play, positive energetic effects are created as people devote themselves to certain situations. Positive effects involve positive emotional transfer and also involve the positive growth in behavior experiences. For instance, children learn to have interaction with others and socialization through play.

Transition of PLAY

Stone tools, potteries, horn tools. The tools close to life. The unsteadiness of the living environment might result in death anytime. Struggling with the nature.

Environment

People

The kinsmen relationships.

2.

How to analyze PLAY? The Agricultural society We analysze PLAY with three aspect axes . Obtaining materials from the nature for creating one’s own toys.

Axis 1. Interaction between Subject and Object of PLAY We would classify the process of people interacting with different subjects in play into three dimensions and conduct analyses.

Temple fair culture.

The outdoor nature. Seasonal customs. Group games.

Toy: interaction between people and things Hanging out: interaction between people and environments

The Industrial society

Game: interaction between people and people With the emergence of the toy industry, toys are more diversified.

Axis 2. The Subjct of PLAY We divide different people in the process of play into two dimensions for conducting analyses. Amusement: It inclines to be more related to adults, which is the enlivenment and relief in the busy days. Education and recreation: It inclines to be more related to children, in which there are the socialized effects such as education and learning in play.

People start to be distant from the nature. Playground, the site for play occurs in the lanes, streets, open space or indoors. The form has moved towards small group games.

The Technology society

With the combination of technology and sound/light effects, profound sensitive experiences are created. Surreal virtual game space

Axis 3. Timeline

Weekly two days off.

Individualization. Virtual game space creates a game platform and an alternative group game mode.

Virtual games social networking platform

We divide play into various eras in accordance with different living backgrounds from the time in the past to present. The Primitive society.

Regional Design - Primitive Society Plan

Play in Original Society Under the environment of unsteadiness in which death might occur anytime, seeking to survive is everything in life. Hence, when a village occurs, the regulations of survival are usually sacred and inviolable. It is the only unchangeable iron regulation. We could say that, play in this era is fused into life and nature. People learn and follow the survival law. People must also increase the survival probability through learning survivability.

2

Design Concept Showing the surviving process of the struggle against the unsteady environment in the primitive society and the steady tribe life created eventually. 1. Yuanshan ruins exhibition hall: The cave is taken as the imagery of the entrance, and, for instance, the relics information, relics and living scene restored imagery are presented.

3

2. Primitive jungle exploration: Based on the conception of primitive forest exploration, the imagery of an adverse environment full of dangers is designed. The uneven route pavement, tortuous routes, and the oppressive retaining wall design bring the journey lots of adventures and uneasiness. 3. Reality exhibition of Yuanshan culture living environment: The realty living scene of the prehistoric culture is utilized to create the imagery of a steady life. 0

3. Forest playground:

Play in Agricultural Society In the agricultural era, as life becomes steadier and the division of labor in the society contributes to the increase of leisure time, the concept of play has begun to be separated from life. In the agricultural society, play closely interlinks with life and environment. The main spirit of play in this era is to have people better fit in with the group society of the life together.

The PU play space is integrated with the forest to create the scene of people’s game exploration in the natural environment.

15

Regional Design - Industrial Society Plan

Play in Industrial Society In the industrial society, as play has become an industry independent from life, it starts to enrich the era of play. In the industrial society, as the family structure begins to condense to small family, the distance among people is widened, and the form of play has, thus, begun to turn into small groups.

Design Concept Showing that in the industrial society, play has become an industry. Abundant toys and playgrounds have begun to emerge. Play also starts to move indoors. We make use of the existing science education hall, and turn it into the: 1. Toy museum 2. Indoor amusement playground.

2

Design Element The contrast of indoors and outdoor space— highlights that the play space has moved from the outdoor nature to the indoor and specific space.

Play in Technology Society Under the technology society, play has developed towards virtual technology without being affected by space and time. Modern technology society belongs to an era of playing brilliantly. The development of modern technology has significant effects on the play of human kind. Getting rid of the limit of time and space has completely integrated play with life and made it everywhere.

Regional Design - Riverside Recreation Space & Future Society Plan

Design Concept 1.Riverside recreation space: 1.Riverside recreation space: Opening the closed wall of the children’s amusement park, this area is arranged as the recreational space. Combining with the cycling route, a comfortable activity region would be shaped at the riverside. As the last stop of the theme planning routes of play, after experiencing the play from the primitive to technology society, we expect that people could perceive a simple scene here, namely, a comfortable grass slope with people cycling and playing Frisbee. Through such a scene, we hope that people could ponder on what the scene of play that belongs to themselves would be in the future. Currently, there are a great many playground facilities in this area. These equipments carry the joyful memories of many people. We intend to make different uses of these devices and fuse them into the landscape so as to have people appreciate and cherish memories or turn them into public facilities.
