Modern Translation of GuanZhong Narrow Courtyard Diploma Studio, Spring 2019 KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden Instructors: Thordis Arrhenius, Frida Rosenberg, Ori Merom

Site: Yue village, Xi’an, China

Guanzhong narrow courtyard (GNC)is a traditional architectural form of a family house in Guanzhong area in China. Such courtyard houses have existed in Guanzhong area for more than 1000 years. However, during the past 30 years, local villagers start to tear down the old building and build new ones to meet the needs of the rapidly increasing population. The goal of this project is to archive the traditional courtyard feeling as well as giving a response to the changing environment. This project ended up with a new type of countryside living-a house that contains a micro-community with both owner and tenants. This project is dedicated to my grandmother for that she always wants to go back to the village.

Muti-generation family

Landlord + tenement

The population structure is changing rapidly in the village, more and more young people go to the city to search for job while old people are left in the village. I used four carefully selected cases to study how the family structure is shaping the space and living mode. After that, I came up with a specific living concept for this project which is illustrated in the diagram below.

1. Site plan 2. Picture of the courtyard of a traditional GNC

The living concept can be sum up as " a core + rooms". The core is for the owner's family and the rooms are for renting out. Though the local youth go out for more opportunities, there are still a huge amount of out comers coming to the village to rent places.

I extracted several life scene from a moive shooted in GNC in order to undersatnd people's daily life in the past. Living in such courtyard house the outdoor activities are as important as the indoor activities. In this design, I am trying to capture the essential space feeling of GNCH.

Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine 12 weeks Studio, Jun. 2017 Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Xi'an, China Instructor: Yuan Shi, Zhao Yu Site: XianYang, Shaanxi, China

The treatment of Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes that doctors and patients should have a close trust relationship, patients should be close to nature to soothe the spirit, etc., while modern Chinese public hospitals are often designed for modern medicine so that they are not very suitable for Traditional Chinese medicine. This program is dedicated to exploring a form of architecture that can serve better for Chinese medicine concepts.

Work of Hertha Hillfon

“Oven is the mysterious heart" ——Hertha Hillfon The project is a museum of clay sculpture works from a passed Swedish sculptor-Hertha Hillfon. The design focuses on how the building as an environment builder creates the right light for different exhibits Like what Hertha said about oven , my intention would be also create some kind of heart for the building. I choosed the staircase to generate the whole space.

Staircase as the Core To make the staircase into a real core, it should play a important role in the walking route. I found two dofferent routes for the triangle shape. Both of them are giving people the impression that this staircase is actully trigering the whole space.

B. Look through the core

Two different routes

A While walking towards the core, visitors can have a glimpse of the staircase without knowing what happening inside.

B While walking around the core, people are able to look through the core and get to know the space in the other side.

Public Space

This urban design project base in the city walls within the south gate of the old city. Xi'an is a historic city with a long history. During the past ten years, Xi'an has witnessed rapid economic development, urban expansion and building density to an unprecedented level. The rapid development of modernization also brings the old city of Xi'an a lot of new problems .

Acupunture As Design Method

When the body has some problems in the subtle, the doctor will puncture the needle into the patient's body to stimulate the specific parts of the human body to achieve the purpose of treatment of disease. This urban design is trying to discuss weather we can use acupuncture method to do some adjustment to a city.

Transformation Strategy The two selected buildings are in good condition. I try not to change its facade and structure of the old buildings when adjusting its function. I opened up the part between two buildings and make it into a landscape courtyard. In the courtyard, people can take a bystander to appreciate the old buildings. Office

Reconstruction Design of Two Residential Buildings

Library

Although the cultural value and research value of these buildings are considered extremely high, the local government has never taken any protection measures, and they even planed to tear it down several times . The transformation point selected two Republican buildings to transform. I hope to transform it into a city exhibition in order to remend the public of the high value of this site.

This transformation point is located at the end of the sub-street of Shuyuan Walking street, and there is a commercial street locate near to it.

This picture shows the stairs on the roof - visitors on the roof of the site and the ancient city of Xi'an Ming Dynasty wall standing face to face , the modern city and historical sites at the same time in people's eyes. Such a picture is exactly what I want to say about this design - a dialogue between history and modernity.

Boiler Room-Hotel Renovation

8 weeks studio, Feb. 2016 Instructor: An Li Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Xi'an, China Site: 3511 Industrial Park, Xi'an, China

This design is located in the 3511old factory park and is a boutique hotel. The building itself was converted from a boiler house built in the 1950s. The design concept for the renovation of this building is based on the fusion and contrast between "new" and "old". When I converted the boiler house into a hotel, I decided to keep the original concrete structure, coal tunnels, chimneys and other architectural elements and made them the features of the new hotel. This gives the building a unique historical and local culture background.

Walking into an old building is a way we understand the past. In this design, I retain the characteristics of the original building elements, adjust the original functional structure.

The route to the top-roof restaurant is independent of the hotel and does not interfere with the hotel rooms. Drain towers retained from the old building can be seen at the entrance hall B.

Today, the topic of the circular economy is being discussed more frequently for environment and population problems. In this design, I’m trying to achieve an energy cycle inside a housing project by implanting vertical farming in an urban residential project. The house will operate like a big tree. The domestic garbage generated by people will come underground through the pipeline. After the treatment, they will be applied to the vertical farming in the building in the form of water and bioelectricity, while the vegetables and fruits produced by vertical farming will be placed directly on people's tables.

Lamp With Novel Luminous Mode

Rammed Earth Light

The light we see in our daily lives shines in the same form-- directly from a bulb or through the lamp sahde. Is there any new way to transport light? In this design, I tried to make light irradiate from the earth. So I put a flashlight in the earth block and guide them out through optical fibers.
