Background
“We are participating in what we are seeing” — Dr. Eric Kandel , Neuroscientist, Nobel Prize winner Mr.C helps families improve the interaction in art museums so they can use this opportunity for children to have better learning experiences and establish an interest in visiting art museums. So, why should parents take their kids to art museums? According to the neuroscientist, Dr. Eric Kandel “We are participating in what we’re seeing”. In another word, when humans looking at images, our brain is in a creative process; we need imagination and interpretation in order to really make sense of it. Furthermore, A research article from The New York Times ”Art Makes You Smart” reports that bringing children to museums at a young age increases tolerance, empathy, and critical thinking.

Also, family visits to museums offer the potential for children and adults to learn together through innovative thinking, visual interpretation and rich engagement with the artistic process. Parents play a crucial role in setting learning outcomes for family visits in art museums and see their role during these museum visits differently. Children visit art museums on field trips and with their families.
Parents play a crucial role in setting learning outcomes.
Introduction
13
The problem
A key problem for most parents is they don’t know how to help their children engage with art in a museum setting; parents feel like they don’t know how to talk about art. As a result, their experience in art museums with their children are mostly passive participation and low-quality interactions with each other.

Design opportunities
How can we enhance family’s visiting experience in art museums, so children can use this opportunity to a have better learning experience?
16
Mr.C’s
Nina Chen / MFA Thesis Project Journey
Mr.C helps families improve the interaction in art museums so they can use this opportunity for children to have better learning experiences and establish an interest in visiting art museums. There are three approaches to achieve the goal. First, make it fun. Through play, children can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments. Second, make it accessible. People feel less confident about things that they are not familiar with. Mr.C provides an easy and simple way to help parents and children to explore art. Third, the power of sharing. “Two are better than one.“ Mr.C offer parents to share their visiting experience with others. So they can learn from each other.

Connection map
In this design research, there are two parts, the first part is finding the connections through six categories, and the second part is to pick 18 most intriguing connections, and create or find an image and choose a word to present them.
The world we live in is interconnected. It’s really interesting that these elements can be connected together, even they are in different category. I found out that everything are interconnected. After finishing the connection, I pick 18 most intriguing connections and use a word to present it and create images to convey the word. These methods help me discover new elements and ideas for the following event. The six categories:

Identify audiences
I create an audience spectrum base on my topic. In the total of eight audiences, six of them are our audience, and the other two are not part of our audience. For my six audiences, I select two types of parent, which are young mon and pregnant women. Also, kids who like art and retired grandparents. The other audience which is out of the spectrum are art hater who doesn’t care about Art and doesn’t have any interest in it, and another is busy working mom who doesn’t have to take their children to art museums. We also make the Audience Spectrum into cards, I choose Polaroid photo style to present my audience.

Survey result
Through the survey, I came out with a conclusion. The key problem for most parents is they don’t know how to help their children engage with art in a museum setting. Parents feel like they “don’t know how to talk about art”. Children like to play hands-on activities and the top two popular materials for children to learn as a tool are physical book and mobile app game. As the result, for the next step. I’ll find 18 insights based on the interviews, research and the survey I did, and find out the three most important insights with three strategies and the following deliverables.

Insights & presentation slides
Here are the important insights that I have found through research, interviews, events, and survey I did. To present these ideas, I decided to develop a bold, friendly and fun visual style and illustration for the design of my presentation slides. 1. Children lose attention quickly. 2. Parents don’t know how to help their children engage with art. 3. Parents like to share their parenting experiences with each other. 4. Children are interested in hand-on activities. 5. We are participating in what we are seeing. 6. Children visit museums in a young age increase tolerance, empathy and critical thinking. 7.
Art should be taught outside the classroom.
8. Parents play a crucial role in determining learning outcomes. 9. Transform their visiting experience by interaction. 10. American believes art should be taught in grades K-12 11. Libraries and museums in communities across the country are expanding learning opportunities that prepare our youngest children for a lifetime of learning and success.
64

12. Museums and libraries are natural and safe places for families to go to learn together and access important resources. 13. Children learn to communicate effectively with others, improve reading comprehension, and apply what they know to new situations. 14. Museums and libraries offer exhibits, environments, and programs that foster interest-driven and project-based learning. 15. Museums and school and public libraries are rich sources of accessible digital media, educational apps, videos, and audio and e-books. 16. Museums and libraries help ensure that all families have access to needed health information and resources. 17. Museums have long recognized the importance of establishing cross-sector partnerships to map and address gaps in early learning service provision and programs. 18. Museums play a strong role in early learning for all children.

In the presentation slides, the illustration style does not match with the audience of this project, it was not friendly enough and the color palette is not exciting for the subject matters. Therefore, I restarted to develop the illustration. In the following pages, I presented how I develop, refine, finalize the illustration and create the character Mr.C. In the first phase of development, I created three different looks of the character, which are based on the concept of a friendly character you will want to be friend with. And I presented these character drawings to my audience and see which character illustration style they like the most.

Layout version 01
The first version of the website has a long scroll for the landing page, it shows every section’s information. Yet, the comment of my user testing is that the long scrolling is kind of boring and people are tired of keep scrolling down.

Version 02
The second version of the website, I put the statement and on the landing page to let people know what is this website about. I also put the teaser video on the landing page to give the viewer a short intro about the project. The result of the user testing is they think the navigation of the website is clear and easy to understand and they think the interaction of the graphics successfully express the idea of the project, which is better interaction.

Email subscription
According to the research, an effective email marketing campaigns need to be intelligently written to captivate the attention in busy inboxes. Here are the three important points that an email campaign should have, which are personalization and imagery, responsive design and call-to-action. I create four template for different purposes, such as feature user’s testimony, promotions of the deliverables, user’s story board, news.

Poster design development
Posters provide a logical and cost-effective way of communicating to a particular target market. When placed correctly, attractive posters can lure nearby people into a specific event and alert them of an upcoming product or service. For the Mr.C’s poster, I try couple different layouts and compositions to showcase the idea of fun, engaging and interesting.

At first, I chose Interart as my project name and did different sketches of the logo. Yet, interart sounds serious and mature. It dose not match with the audience of my project. In the end, I renamed my project as the character Mr.C which I have created.

What happens in our brains when looking at art?

“We are participating in what we are seeing” — Dr. Eric Kandel , Neuroscientist, Nobel Prize winner
Dr. Eric Kandel is fascinated by this question. A neuroscientist at Columbia University, Kandel has spent his career studying how we form memories; he won the Nobel Prize in 2000 for his research. But his other passion is art, and in his new book, “Reductionism in Art and Brain Science: Bridging the Two Cultures,” he explores how our brains perceive and process creative works. Looking at the thick color swaths of a Mark Rothko painting, Kandel marvels at how the artist reduced the image to just one of its elements: no form, no figuration, just color. For Kandel, studying the flickers and variations in a Rothko painting is “almost a religious experience.” Our “brains on art” have a hum of their own — they’re busy handling a flood of information from a few different streams. When we look at an image (or a person), Kandel says that our retinas see the photons bouncing off it. But that’s not enough for us to perceive what we’re seeing. So our brains turn to two additional strategies for help: bottom-up and top-down processing.
