CHEOPS BOARD The CHEOPS board runs the study association. They participate in every committee offered by CHEOPS. This year the 31st board is taking the lead, consisting of Martijn, Alissa, Merel, Simone, Sven and Daan. Being the 31st board, they take the lead in all the activities of the association. They will also participate in the introduction activities this week, to make everyone feel welcome. The board members will introduce themselves in the following pages. CHEPOS | 15
MARTIJN VEGT, Chairman As I come from Leiden, my favorite food is hutspot (potatoes, carrots, onions). Also, my favorite coffee is Kaffe Hela Bönor Mörkrost, from IKEA. If you are wearing a onesie during the intro you should watch out for people a bit tipsy. You do not want to wake up in a onesie covered in last night’s meal. If you want a fun time you should hang out with Merel; she is always looking for fun!
ALISSA LOS, Secretary My feet are size 39, which is a bit smaller than average in my family. My best tip for you as freshmen is to enjoy everything! Martijn will prabably gain the most weight this academic year. He likes the supertje, a very fatty french fries snack. Also, Daan is a stylist in desguise; he will probably get shaved this intro because he cares a lot bout his hair.
MEREL VAN HOOREN, Treasurer I have the best taste in clothing. Daan may seem fashionable but he only knows shoes. My favorite coffee is Starbucks. In the summertime I like Java Chip Frappuccino and in wintertime Caramel Macchiato. On your first day you should ask a lot of questions, but more importantly, just go with the flow. Simone will be always there for you to count on, she is always ready to help!
16 | CHEPOS
NOW
SIMONE TAX, Education The people walking around in colorful overalls are the pleasant members of CHEOPS. Sven is super relaxed! However, during the intro you should really watch out for the horrible jokes made by Pim (30th board). On your first day of study you should definitely talk to as many people as possible. You should also register for CHEOPS!
SVEN THIJSEN, Professional Relations My favorite coffee is black, not the Starbucks’ one. My taste in clothing is more expensive than my wallet can afford. With the 31st board we are going to make Vertigo twice as tall to make its name more suitable. Alissa is very handsome. And also very helpful. And extraordinarily smart. And always cheerful. In spite of that she can also be very sweet.
DAAN KROPMAN, Public Relations When I drank SchĂźltenbrau my tongue froze to the can. I put a lot of effort into getting to the best hairdresser. I always go to one in Gemert (45min. travel) and I make plans with my friends to go there collaboratively. I also really have a fetish for shoes. If something falls on my shoes I cannot stop focussing on it. My closet contains many more shoes than that of an average girl!

EINDH VEN
City of Light In 1891 Frits Philips opened a small light bulb factory in the town of Eindhoven, which however had already gained its city rights in 1232. This light bulb factory grew into the multinational electronics manufacturer Philips and Eindhoven grew accordingly upon this success. Therefore, Eindhoven is also called the Lichtstad (City of Light) and one week a year, with Carnival, the name of Eindhoven is even changed to Lampegat. In the Second World War many historical buildings were lost downtown, which left Eindhoven without a coherent historical center. This, combined with the demolition rage of the 60s and 70s, left space for progressive architecture in Eindhoven. The 18 Septemberplein has for instance undergone a significant metamorphosis a couple of years ago. The TU/e Science Park is also transforming with the Campus 2020 plan. On the former industrial site Strijp-S the history of the city is however still maintained despite their change in function. This allows the city to gradually gain more character. The old factories and large empty sheds in the city center and in Strijp offer new opportunities for creative entrepreneurs, start-ups and breweries. Next to that, Eindhoven is still proud of its titles such as ‘smartest region in the world’ and ‘best city center of the Netherlands’ and is known as a dynamic city. The light has not disappeared either as in each November the artificial light festival GLOW takes place. In this way Eindhoven remains the Lichtstad of the Netherlands.

NINA VERKERK, DELFT: “When I was asked to write a piece to compare Delft and Eindhoven, I smiled. Nothing is nicer, better and more beautiful than Delft, and definitely not Eindhoven! Hereby my vision on the fact why you are better off in Delft. Firstly, Delft is not situated in Brabant. The picturesque city Delft has a wonderful location in the Randstad, with a minimal distance of just ten minutes by train to major cities like Rotterdam and The Hague (instead of villages like Veldhoven and Helmond). Not only the surrounding areas of Delft, with the green heart, the beach of Scheveningen, architectonic and progressive cities, but also Delft itself is interesting in a cultural and recreational sense. By the absence of a historical city centre Eindhoven has the opportunity to profile itself as a modern city with progressive architecture. The city does not need to refer far back in history. Eindhoven however most definitely has a history, which can still be discovered in monuments like the small Philips light bulb factory (now Philipsmuseum), the Witte Dame, the iconic Lichttoren and Cuijpers’ Catherinakerk.

Prepare answers to questions you can expect in advance and, finally: relax.

Going out in Eindhoven Some of the city’s best activities, bars and restaurants
A good night out consists of a fun activity or good bar and a great meal, preferably (as a student) an affordable one. Some of these can be found in Strijp-S, most in the city center near the Catharinaplein. There and at the Markt are restaurants; most bars are, obviously, at Stratumseind. Cinema ‘De Zwarte Doos’ Situated in the former chemistry lab attached to Vertigo: an affordable cinema, which also serves as a grand café.
Wildeman pub quiz Every Tuesday and Wednesday at 20.30h you and your team can compete to win the quiz night at this bar.
Escape Rooms Escape with your friends in this thrilling game; rooms can be found at Strijp-S, Stratumseind and the Mathildelaan.
Van Abbe Museum As a student, you can visit the Van Abbe Museum for free! But: only on Tuesday between 15.00h and 17.00h. 38 | CHEPOS
TOOLS Café Thomas Café Thomas is the favorite bar of CHEOPS, as the faculty parties are organized here. Besides these parties, students of the Department of the Built Environment frequently party until 02.00h on Thursday nights.
Café Spijker Next to Café Thomas, Café Spijker is situated. Popular among students, this bar is one of the few to enjoy many visitors on both Tuesdays and Thursdays. It also serves 3-course meals for €15,Monday through Thursday.
De Ballenbak De Ballenbak is the only bar that is open after 02.00h, it serves cheap beer and a chance to drink and dance until dawn, but only if you bring your student card and enter before 01.45h.
Café Santé Café Santé is the economical alternative to the prominent bars in the street. Ten beers, a ‘blaadje bier’, are served for just over €10. It is based halfway the first section of Stratum.
Bierprofessor Bierprofessor translates to Beerprofessor, which gives a hint what kind of bar this is. The bar pours 6 kinds of draft beer and has 166 more on bottle, it can be found opposite to ‘t Lempke. CHEPOS | 39
Trafalgar Pub Among the many restaurants in the Dommelstraat is the Trafalgar Pub. This Irish pub serves excellent meat dishes. The atmosphere is great, both for groups or a romantic date night.
Best kebab in town A night out stands or falls with a good ‘kapsalon’ or kebab. Both Hizmet and Eethuis Vestdijk are famous for their quality. The first one serves fresh homemade meals, the other quality portions, served with great care.
Soul Kitchen This restaurant on Strijp-S is not only very affordable and has live music, but also serves a social function, both for the community and staff. Soul Kitchen is a training center for young adults collaborating with a care and work center.
De Burger De Burger, serves the best burgers in town for an affordable price. It is located next to the Catharinaplein. Although it is not possible to reserve a seat, it is worth the wait on a busy day.
Happy Italy This restaurant combines three things students love: cheap food, large portions, and quality food and atmosphere. No better place in Eindhoven to enjoy a good pasta or pizza. 40 | CHEPOS
TOOLS how to become that annoying student who is...
ALWAYS BUILDING You have been studying for a few months, and have really gotten the hang of building. And so you shall build things, everywhere, with everything. To get you started, here are a few experiments you can try to fully show the world what you are made of.
ANNOYING THE BARTENDER: Get your hand on a few beer coasters. Use the edge of a beer coaster to split another one halfway through (see tutorial below). Repeat the process and put two together to create awesome beer tower building blocks. To fully annoy the bartender but risk getting kicked out: add some beer glasses to your tower! ANNOYING YOUR HOUSEMATES: Have you already found out how high you can make a pancake tower before it collapses? Made a tower of uncooked spaghetti? If not, these are perfectly normal things to try in your first year. To make life a little better for you and your housemates afterwards, here is a good recipe for an edible building experiment: zucchini boats. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C, split a zucchini over the length, scoop out the content to get two long canoes. Add crème fraiche, herbs and ham cubes to the removed zucchini. Put the mixture back in the canoes and sprinkle with cheese. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes.
