Henry David Thoreau once said “One must maintain a little bittle of Summer, even in the middle of winter,” and that is what is difficult to do in the cold winds and driving rain as we put together our Summer programme. It’s great to see so many new faces at Chequer Mead, as people experience the venue for the first time, and we are thankful for so many compliments on the acts that we are getting here, and the way the theatre is run. With that in mind, we look forward to welcoming old and new faces over the next few months. We are very pleased to announce that thanks to the fundraising of the Chequer Mead Friends, we have been able to install a state of the art projector, screen and satellite dish and we will now be screening National Theatre Live performances and select film screenings. Keep an eye on the website for programme details. Coming up we have comedy from The Grin and Bare It team in the Pavilion Café, Peter Gill presents his evening of Musical Satire, and we have the rising star Patrick Monahan. Music comes from Irish superstar Dominic Kirwan, 60’s legends The Manfreds, and the fabulous Elkie Brooks. We also have family entertainment from Sid Sloane from Cbeebies, Treasure Island, and the legend that is Sooty. With tributes to Phil Collins, The Bee Gees, Queen and Neil Diamond, and magic from Ben Hart…there’s only one place to hang out this Summer! PETE JENKINS Centre Manager
FLAME OF HOPE UPDATE On 9th December we held a fundraising concert in aid of the Philippines relief fund. The evening was extremely well supported and we raised over £6000. We are pleased to say that through your generosity we have been able to fund two projects. The first is a project building brand new boats for fishermen in one of the worst hit areas. We have funded 20 new boats for these men, bringing them back a source of income, and an economy source back into the area. The second is towards the rebuilding of a school. This is a project that is being overseen by one of our local councillors Danny Favor. Both these projects would not have been possible without the generosity of the people of East Grinstead, so thank you.

CHEQUER MEAD
Friends
As a patron of Chequer Mead Community Art Centre we are sure that you would be more than happy to support its continuing success. As a Friend of Chequer Mead you will greatly benefit the Art Centre. Your annual membership fee is used by the small Friends committee to provide items to enhance the centre for all its users and hirers. In recent years we have been able to provide full height mirrors for the meeting and rehearsal rooms, child booster seats, 80 new chairs, stage condenser microphones, clip frames in The Pavilion, the planters by the front entrance, portable modesty screens. We continue to raise funds and meet the centre manager regularly to find out what is needed. In return, we offer Friends concessions on some shows, we hold quarterly ticket draws so you could win a pair of free tickets to a show. We hold events just for Friends and Volunteers for example, we recently held a wine tasting evening, quiz night and a talk and we email regular newsletters to keep you informed of upcoming events and shows. If you are interested in helping further, then why not join the Committee? We raise funds in addition to the membership fees by holding regular raffles, table top sales and run a 1001 Club. If you enjoy fund raising and have some good ideas we would love you to join us. Please contact: Chairperson, Mrs Ginnie Waddingham – 01342 326627

THE RITE OF SPRING / ROMEO AND JULIET WEDNESDAY 21ST MAY AT 7:30PM The Rite of Spring / Romeo and Juliet is a visceral marriage of two tales of slaughtered innocence. The violent dissonance in Stravinsky's depiction of a young virgin chosen for the dance of death mirrors the hatred between Shakespeare's Montagues and Capulets, whose children are fated to die in the ancient blood feud of their families. Performed in four-hand piano and commedia half-mask, the stories interweave through passion, vitality, rage and despair to the dizzying climax of sacrifice. The latest production by Concert Theatre, a young company which combines live classical music and theatre, brings together pianists from the Royal Academy of Music, Lecoq-trained performers and mask specialists Trestle Theatre. CHEQUER MEAD WORLD WAR 1 TWO WEEK COMMEMORATION
This year sees the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Many organisations are commemorating the event in different ways, and Chequer Mead are hosting a number of events to mark the occasion between 21st July and the 4th August – the date Britain declared war on Germany. These include performances of Oh What A Lovely War, Talbot House, Land Of Hope & Glory and a screening of the film version of War Horse. In the Greenstede Gallery we will have an exhibition on WW1, including reference to Sidney Godley, a youth art exhibition and competition, with their interpretation of the War, and a photographic exhibition of people in the town with their ancestors who fought in the war. There will also be two talks on different aspects of the war - The Lost Generation and The Unknown Warrior, both presentations by Andy Thompson giving a fascinating insight into War on the Western Front. We hope you will get involved and find something that interests you and commemorate an event that we should never let slip from our memories. Chequer Mead acts as an agent for all events

WW1 had a massive impact on British society. I million men were killed, 2 million were wounded and countless thousands returned to their families and communities with hideous memories and deeply traumatised by their time in the trenches. Our presentation examines these issues through the eyes of the men, women and children who began, to pick up the pieces left by the war to end all wars. Our lives were shaped by the events of WW1 and understanding more about the impact of the conflict helps us appreciate more about ourselves. Card transaction fee applies
TWO WEEK COMMEMORATION LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY CENTENARY TRIBUTE WEDNESDAY 30TH JULY AT 7:30PM Chequer Mead Theatre proudly presents the ultimate tribute to the 1914 centenary commemorations of The Great War. The show, starring the very popular, talented and wonderfully entertaining Stephen Dunnett and Diane Moore , brings to the stage the most famous, well-loved tunes of the music hall days. The patriotic, roof raising melodies which carried us through the Great War, a touch of Vaudeville magic from across the Atlantic, and the popular wireless favourites of the 30’s and 40’s are all included in this spectacular show. With great period costumes and a wonderful stage setting Stephen and Diane will recreate the songs of that golden age and take you for a spin down memory lane. Audience participation is allowed throughout and dressing in the style of the day is highly encouraged! A TALK BY ANDY THOMPSON
THURSDAY 31ST JULY AT 8:00PM
Tickets: £5.00
The period 1918-20 became known as the Great Silence as the grief of the war settled on families and communities in which they, and those killed and maimed, had lived. The army had insisted that no man would be returned from the battlefield and thus mothers, widows, fathers, brothers, sisters and lovers could not close the life of their loved one. The idea was mooted that a symbolic ‘Tommy’ be brought home and laid to rest in Westminster Abbey. On Nov 11th 1920 the body was laid to rest. Our presentation reflects on the raw emotion of a nation coming to terms with its grief and loss.
TALBOT HOUSE FRIDAY 1ST AUGUST AT 7:30PM During the Great War, Talbot House in Poperinge, Belgium, a few short miles behind the front line, became a haven for thousands of allied troops - a ‘home from home’ where they enjoyed some home comforts and remembered the men that they really were. Run by a diminutive chaplain named Tubby Clayton the house became known by its army signaller’s code of Toc H and ultimately would be the inspiration for the association with that name. Tickets: £12.00 Concessions: £10.00
This play, written by Peter Gill and aimed at a family audience, recreates the humour, music and wonderful atmosphere of this inspirational house.
